Icon Wank!
Over on the LJ feed for the comic VGCats, wank has occurred. But it has nothing to do with the comic.

[info]jisuk appears and asks commenter sebastian_wong if they are subeo from DA. S_W says they are not. Says jisuk to that, "then you should probably credit her for that icon art". S_W responds with 'why' and jisuk proceeds to tell him/her that it's respectful to the artist. It is then that [info]naraht joins the fray in defense of S_W, dragging someone else in, who at this point had nothing to do with the wank.

And they're off. We get "discussions" on the difference between using movie shots and original/fan art in icons, cursing, name calling, furbashing, naraht being an internet lawyer, invocations of LJ Drama, the obligatory cry of "STOP BEING A H8TER", and more.

I just love people who get caught red handed and then try to make the one telling them off the evil one.
I had a huge fight with an idiot once who claimed my icons to be their creation. Mind, not only no credit, but as their work.
I can live with the 'no credit', even though it would be nice if people do so.
The wank about it is extremly amusing, especially since there seem to be several trolls in the dungeons.

I hate people who don't credit original art and fanart. The amount of times I have seen some fantastic art in an icon or a signature etc and it's not credited, drives me nuts. If I see good art somewhere like that, I want to track it down. Credit please!! Not to mention it's just polite and takes no time at all.

Theft is theft. Hell, I take Final Fantasy caps and put them in icons, and fully admit it. But Square Enix has money coming out of their asses, and small artists posting their work on the net, for free, do not have that luxury.

Inotherwords: it's totally okay to "steal" art as long as the artist is rich/famous enough not to care. Or something.

LOGIC FAILURE GET.

(And I airquote "steal" because, people, IT'S JUST A FUCKING ICON RLY.)

I don't get why be upset when it comes to not crediting icons. Personally I credit icons so that if someone else likes it they can find who made it to see if the person who made it has any more they like. If I saw someone using an icon I made by first reaction would be "Oh cool! Someone actually liked that crappy icon!" not "ZOMG! Did they credit me?!?!"

I must have rotten friends though because they never credit me when I make them icons. *emo tear*

My view is that if I had made the art that was being used as an icon, I would personally ask for credit (Hi, glad you like my art enough to make it into an icon! Could you possibly credit me for the original art in your icon keywords?). The worse thing they can do is say no and then if it's REALLY that bad you can report it to LJ. But I probably wouldn't care. Hell they could even claim they made the art in the little 100x100 square, one day their charade will fail. As long as no ones making money off my art then I can't really care that much.

(Although I did like subeo's "I will let you guys know when I make enough money not to care about theft." Hee.)

(OH P.S. If it was art I did for a company for a movie or comic or something? Then I really wouldn't care, because the character would probably be recognizable from the movie and that means more publicity for it and more money for it and eventually for me. ;D )

This is one of the most popular icons on LJ right now. It's being used all over the interweb, without credit. This wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't specifically asked anyone who reused it to credit.

There's a notable difference between not crediting art, and not crediting when the artist specifically asked that it be credited.
"...why a 'fan' would not want to promote an artist they pretend to like by -crediting- them so they can earn other fans." and that sentence makes no sense whatsoever. even if i was only -pretending- to like subeo's art, i'm not going to make a stupid little 100x100 pixel shrine to her.

the only reason this whole thing started was because some cunt recognized her drawing and decided to ruin my afternoon with a pretentious little comment about it.

here's another one: a few pages into the comments luger_ made their own icon, a tiny cropping of a single frame of this week's vg cats. well, shit, they only credited how they made the icon, but not the original artist. they cannot be a true vg cats fan unless they credit Scott Ramsoomair for drawing such an inspiring image. go bitch at them about your issues.
Does this guy say anything that isn't a Straw Man or Ad Hominem?

My EMO ORANGE icon is starting to pop up everywhere.

It was capped from a Sinfest strip, which I then colored, cropped and bordered. Some of the people I've seen with it haven't credited me or Sinfest. While the Sinfest part is a shame (everyone should read Sinfest), I don't care about credit. I like to make icons. I can't possibly use them all.



The REAL shame is most of these people probably haven't seen the smug apple that goes along with it!
