MegaTokyo Wank!
As reports by a mousie in w_r(I will take credit for going otu and getting the links, thank you v. much).

Sabyr, a longtime Megatokyo forumite known for stating his occasionally unpopular opinions (and sometimes arguing the creator, Fred, down) with over 2,000 posts since '03, posts something rather tame in support of the unpopular characters in the current scene. This is nothing like what he usually does when he wants to shit-stir. Basically he says that everyone in the forum has probably participated in morally bankrupt fan behavior at one point or another. A few posts after that, he basically tells everyone on the forum that the fanboys in the comic are the forumites (which is a thought I had myself, but I digress).

Predictably, people go nuts, which is more or less usual. Thins stay calm, even when mod Ray Kremer posts: "Don't presume to speak for everybody. How many of us really gave a shit about seeing Kimiko's panties? Had she really pulled her skirt up it would have had far more importance to her character and the story."Sabyr defends his (rather weak) metaphor and people are still pissy. And then, things get really wanky.

Mod Refugee tempbans Sabyr for three days on grounds of trolling. Various people speak up in his defense and are told by the mods to take it to the PMs and shut up already. Other long-time regulars take issue, and are told to drop it again. Finally, Ray Kremer posts:

"I guess somebody needs to say it so that rumors don't have to fly around [...] Yes, you won't be seeing Sabyr around anymore. The stuff in here certainly wasn't a huge deal, kind of a silly thing to end it all on actually, but there have been somewhat continual issues of one sort or another and it contributes to the peacefulness of everybody for one of these small dumb things to finally be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. [...]"

Everyone then goes nuts again, and the mods start yelling that no one knows what REALLY HAPPENED (dun dun dun) and that the regulars should, again, drop it. No one does, and WyndhamHeart flips his/her shit and temp bans most of the discussion's participants. Then thread dead from lock.

Choice quotes:

"Of course it's obsessive, but it doesn't involve invasion of privacy. The high horse you think you have doesn't exist, and you've insulted a lot of people and many of them aren't staying quiet about it."

"I wasn't saying, "You're like that," I was saying, "We're like that." If I've insulted people by saying that they're like me, then that insult exists in their minds and not in my words. My opinion of myself is not so low as to use similarity with me as an insult."

Sabyr: If I've insulted people by saying that they're like me, then that insult exists in their minds and not in my words.
Ray Kremer: Whatever helps you sleep at night, man.

"Actually, I have some pretty high moral standards. Don't confuse that with my debating style on this forum. I chose a position in this debate and argued that position. Whether I'm right or wrong is irrelevant, since the debate is about making people think about the issues. We're not going to vote at the end of it to decide a "winner"."

"Well no, by this point you clearly didn't intend to be rude, however you should still take responsibility for offending people rather than saying it's not your problem because you didn't mean to. Plus examine why it was so easy for you to unintentionally piss everybody off and maybe learn to avoid that in the future. If you even have a future here, the situation seems to still be developing. I know you hate not being able to respond to me when I say things pubically about you, sorry, I guess" (after Sabyr's temp ban)

This page includes Sabyr, God-Talk and naked celebrity romps.

There's also a miniwank about Asperger's, and a whole 'nother wank about Fred's so-called "adult drawings" going on if you wander out onto the comic proper.

On a semi-OT note (Which is about the only thing I can add, since I don't read MT), I sometimes am a little sad to think that I don't frequent the forums of my favorite comics. I hate to think of what epic wanks I've missed/am missing out on. The great Mat Sherer/Jay Naylor split, the Penny Arcade/Strawberry Shortcake controversy, Ghastly's original "White Aryan Jesus" strip, any number of lesser kerfluffles on CRFH, Sluggy Freelance, that one strip (who's name I can never remember) who printed Rick Santorum's real phone number...

Bet that was some choice wank I missed. (But considering I read close to 40 comics a day, God knows I can't watch them all, or even most.)

I've read a lot of comic forums. You aren't missing much.

I never leave PA's Artist forum, and Real Life, when I frequented it, was fairly tame.

You beat me to it. Goshdern you.

I feel slightly guiltier about commenting with nothing interesting to say about the wank itself, than I do about giving up on Megatokyo. The dude clearly has enough fans.

Hey, don't feel bad! I forgive you, because I'm so into you, even though I'm way too smart for you; even my henchmen think I'm crazy, and I'm not...Oh, sorry.

I haven't read Megatokyo in over two years, and I've never been happier. Why IS MT such a wanky webcomic?

My interpretation: It's wish-fulfilment for some people. Who doesn't want to fly into Tokyo on a whim, get a job, meet lots of cool people who want to spend time with you, and blah blah blah? I know I do.

And thus, I think, why some people get right up in arms about it.

Not everyone, of course, by any stretch, but it only takes a few batshit crazies to make everyone look nuts.

Piro=Suethor?

Hmmm... maybe... I mean, I hesitate to go that far because, well, a lot of people I like like Megatokyo, and I don't want to say anything bad about them, but I think that's a lot of it. Piro's pretty Sue-ish (Well, Stu-ish, I guess), and there's always a market for Sue/Stu-ish Heroes. That's why a lot of books sell, that's why a lot of fanfic has a huge number of fanpeople.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking a Sue-ish (Stu-ish) story, just so long as one does not insist on its literary integrity. I vaguely remember getting fed up with people taking MT too seriously. (Gee, people taking things too seriously? On the internet? What a novel idea!) That and the living doll PS2 accessory. That was just silly. And kind of creepy.

If Japan could make such a living doll PS2 accessory, I totally wouldn't be surprised if they did.

A friend of mine, lent me the first volume. And while I enjoyed it, I really couldn't get that thought out of my mind. @.@;

That's probably why I find it so utterly boring. Piro is shy, boring, dorky, angsty, and utterly un-proactive, but things still just fall in his lap. It wasn't so bad when the comic was actually, y'know, funny, and not full of wangst.

I thought if anything generated wank, it would be Fred's rant about the Ruri porn- or whatever it was.

Yeah, I thought that was going to be a bit wankier. At least 4chan's happy about him admitting to it now.

Sabyr sez:
"You're missing something. The underwear is a metaphor. Fans want to probe the most intimate parts of the object of their fandom. This is usually something like the details of their private life. But here it is more obviously and bluntly represented by Kimiko's underwear."

...sometimes, panties are just panties. STFU.

I say this even though I do not trust Fred's motivations for bringing up plotlines involving dainty shoujo knickers.

*reads rant*

As much as I think Pi- er, Fred is one of the wangstiest people in webcomics, more power to him for taking his art back. Harassing someone like that is pretty low, whether you like Megatokyo or not.

Though if there are any juicy stories/wank about what longstanding grudge provoked someone to get juvenile JUSTICE!!!11 against him, I'm all ears.
