Girl-Wonder.org gets trolled. Well, that didn't take long.

Girl-Wonder.org is a site that was recently started to discuss females in mainstream comics. One of the features of the site is a column entitled Girls Read Comics (And They're Pissed).

Aaaand, we get wank in the comments right away. I'd summarize the best of the worst for your easy wank-reading pleasure, but luckily for me, dafnap already did it here.


Meanwhile, one of the commenters goes back to his LJ to brag, and is followed there by some of the people he pissed off.

That Achsariel dude keeps saying it's just an ideal. And that men look at guys and comics and think "I wish I looked like that" and look at women and think, "She's hot," and that women think the reverse.

Funny, what I always think when I look at a guy in comics is "...wow, steroids really do cause...*ahem*" and look at the women and go, "...Where are the rest of her clothes?" or "...spines don't actually bend that way."

And while I agree that female portrayal in most comics is shallow enough to have their bosom size bigger than their IQs, I can't help but find it amusingly ironic how these same ladies going high-and-mighty about character concept design = fanservice are probably the same cooing over hideously effeminate 'bishies'.

I had a whole frothy, vitriol-laden post ready for both the wankstains over there and the people over here who don't seem to be getting it (you're interrogating the wank from the wrong perspective!), but...it's probably better not to wank inside the house.

I'll just say this: the arguments on girl-wonder.org aren't solely about the character's appearance. But since we're concentrating on that here, if Black Canary wears a swimsuit and fishnets then Batman should wear assless chaps and a mesh shirt. And not just when he's out clubbing with Robin. Sexual parity for teh win.

I like how everyone suggests she make her own comic, and "if it sells well, you'll know that you were right." Or something. Because an independently produced online comic can OBVIOUSLY directly compare itself to the long running DC/Marvel comics which have an established history and fanbase. Because that is SO COMPAREABLE.

What in fucking lahdeedah Christmas makes you think that anyone SUPPORTS objectification of a human being, you selfrighteous inept wannabe devil's advocates? Furthermore, the bishofetish phenomenon, while obnoxious, can hardly compare to YEARS AND YEARS OF NONSENSE that really HASN'T ANY PLACE IN A SOCIETY AS SUPPOSEDLY MODERN AND PROGRESSIVE AS THIS. Seriously. Apples and fuckin' oranges. They're both fruit, but can we focus on the issue at hand rather than playing defense-o-whine?

Wanna complain to me about the sex issues in manga? You got you reply right off - I save you time and money: Japan as a society isn't as progressive gender wise as ours. Does that excuse the sexism? No, but it explains the worst of it.

We, as a society, are supposed to be BEYOND the sort of bollocks that our largely backward-evolved and mired-in-the-dusts-of-time comics industry thinks is good business. That kind of bullshit is INSULTING TO MEN, WOMEN AND EVERYONE IN BETWEEN. How is that not absolutely crystal-damkn-clear? How is that not HERKIMER DIAMON TRANSPARENT? The industry assumes guys to be easily-titillated, dumb as fuck, and - I could go, on, but I've already flooded the room in schplooo!

This is a legitimate issue no matter how much you bitch and piss about it, mmmmkay? It's not just an issue that crops up in comics, either. It shows up in movies, in advertising, in writing - and why the hell does it, anyhow? we're supposed to be BEYOND this shit.

It's a symptom of a bigger problem. No, saying I'm disgusted with this issue does not mean I support the bisho-mania of extremely hormonal teenage girls (though I do understand it, and I went through that phase myself, and I think it's an intirely different sort of drool than that the comics industry assumes they will be eliciting, but that's another kettle of fish), and it doesn't mean I'm ig'nant of other issues. Nor do I deny the fact that gender and sex issues and sexism in this society don't fuck everyone over. Society as it is? It's pretty damn ill. EVERYONE gets it up the ass.

But, ya see, women have been getting it for too long. We're the default victims and objects for this business, and - why is this okay again? WHY is it acceptable for the comics indistry to assume that all men like this crap? It's pretty insulting to everyone.

MOSTLY, though, it's insulting to women. That's why MOST of the people who are pissed off are women (and to the pissed-off men out there: I loff j00, you are fucking awesome, and here is your megaphone and clue-by-four - go nuts and be gleeful in your bludgeoning of the dumb).

When I was a little musouka, I used to LOVE comic books. I got giddy when a con was held near our town (and begged my dad to take me), I literally my Spiderman shirt to rags, and I practically lived at my local comic book store. All my allowance went towards comic books.

But, as I started getting older, I finally realized that comics weren't really aimed at me. Part of it was my youth, but a lot of it was uncomfortably staring at cover after cover of girls in thong bikinis. A lot of it was the fact that the only female comic book character I had ever related to was in an old comic book series canceled about five years ago. A lot of it was the fact that the comics I did like, I felt ashamed of, because magazines and comic book store owners told me they were "uncool".

Then I discovered manga, and I never looked back.
