A spoiler (of course, it was also announced in the newspaper, which makes me wonder where it stands spoilerwise but ANYWAY) about future events in Spidey's little world is announced.

Second comment in, the bitching starts.

So the question is, is it wanky and stupid to suddenly change a giant feature of one of your characters that's one of your biggest draws or just a good business tactic? How will MJ feel? Where the hell is baby May? Why the fuck did they kill off all my favourites?

Oh, and there's comic nerds talking at eachother in over four hundred comments. Not really with, mostly at.

Bah, I don't care. They weren't exactly subtle about his secret identity. Me, I figured out who he is years ago!
*looks around triumphantly*

Well, the clone thing kinda confused me here for a while maybe.

Maybe I shouldn't be laughing, but comic book nerds talking at each other is funny. Talking to each other, not so funny, but the way they're going on is kinda.

Gee, did someone watch X3, and get an idea?

I root for Captain America because he is opposed to the law, even though the government already knows his ID. Yays.

Silly, WOMEN aren't important in comics, since they're MADE for MEN.

Hahaha, as if Marvel isn't going to retcon it all in about 2 issues time when Spidey realises he made a mistake and Cable just mindrapes everyone into forgetting again. Yay for ethically challanged psychics!

Actually, I confess, the reason I don't care about this unmasking is because the artists they're using make Peter really, really hot. Mmmm yeah take that mask off baby.

Yay! Old costume!

That said, Peter was just basically mind-raped in one of the comics I read by SHIELD's psychics. And he's still supporting the SRA? Is it a public registry?

And I wish those guys would stop throwing around "status quo". And they would make the gov't a bit more sympathetic.
/hey, my icon looks like the House of M logo!

Like I've said before, this kind of stuff makes me really hesitant to get into mainstream US comics. Because, shit, if half the people there believe that this is just for ratings or that it'll be retconned out, then that says a lot about the industry.

I didn't even want to try and wade through all that. But I was terribly amused by the person signing as 'Matt' in this related post--especially when someone said, "Damn. You are REALLY serious about this." It took pretty much all my willpower not to comment, "Well, this is the guy who once bought up his work on the Human Genome Project in an attempt to win a fight about scientific inaccuracies in Iron Man." Now that is classic over-the-top fanboy, right there.

I find this one surreal. Last year my favorite comic book character got his brains blown out in graphic detail after moping about how nobody liked him for about 79 pages.

Compared to that- unmasking's a walk in the park.

I'll grant that Spidey fans have been burned by the extended train derailing that was the Clone Saga, but this seems to have made pockets of the fandom so ultra-conservative that they don't even want the illusion of change. (See the reaction to the new suit, which was announced as temporary to start with.)
