FFR mini-wank.
Pretty small.

[info]dinogrrl posts a rant in fanficrants about how she wishes there were more genfic and how it's possible for people of any gender combination to be friends without a sexual component.

There is much "WORD!" to be had, until [info]a_white_rain decides to disagree, and other people decide to disagree with her. Surprisingly civil for fanficrants, but still full of bite-sized crunchy goodness.

Also, although I don't know that I'd call it wanky, I can't help being amused by multiple people referring to [info]dinogrrl as a "he" even though she's got "grrl" right in her username.

Oh god, the "FRIENDSHIP" rant. HATE HATE HATE.

I DO believe in friendship. Yes, I prefer slashing or pairing up friends, but it's not an automatic response in my brain that goes "buddies = butt buddies". Just because you think two people are "just friends" doesn't mean I am obligated to to put them in a "no touchy, friendship only" zone.

WORD. You win the Internet for today. ^_^

I do believe in friendship as well. I also prefer slash and pairing friends, just because, hey, a friend/friend pairing is a lot better, to me, to write than an enemy/enemy pairing or a brother/brother pairing.

I can't tell you how many times I've been literally screamed at online in Trigun fandom for daring to suggest that Wolfwood and Vash could be more than "just friends" even though it's quite hinted at in the manga their relationship could have gone either way because OH NOES YOUR DESTROYING THEIR PLATONIC FRIENDSHIP.

It's also not an automatic response for my brain either: I just like shipping couples who have a reason to exist.

And I really do see this rant as a form of entitlement bitchery. It's like "write what I want!!!!11" and honestly? If you don't like reading your OH SO PURE FRIENDSHIP couple being a little less than platonic, don't read the slash. Problem solved, and the rest of us can be happy.

*mops up after self*

Yes! I do believe that people can be "just friends." (I don't even like the expression "just friends" all that much because it implies that friendship is inferior to romance.) But writing romance fic doesn't contradict that. (Besides, even in fic some people are "just friends."... if all the friends were boinking all the other friends, it could be like an OT30 of some kind. Not that that would be wrong.)

Just because I pair up friends doesn't mean I'm incapable of understanding friendship or platonic love. It's not like I have this weird compulsion where I HAVE to put them together because I think they're somehow not complete otherwise. PLZ TO NOT BE TALKING DOWN TO ME.

No, but if you have characters whose friendship you think is awesome and you love that sort of relationship, it's perfectly reasonable to want to see more fic where they are friends.

What's unreasonable is saying "OMG I WILL WRITE WHAT I WANT!!!!!!!!! STOP BEING AGAINST WHAT I LIKE!!!"

okay, I went overboard on the exclamation points...

But seriously. Just because a person wants to see some fic with two people as friends doesn't mean they think you're evil or your writing sucks or your pairing even sucks. It means they like the friendship.

It does get a little irritating when over 90% of the fic hooks a bunch of people up, especially if the fandom isn't primarily romance. People rant to say "Yeah, I want this. There's an audience for this." I think it's a way to announce to writers that may tend to cater to readers a bit that they can write about friendship and still gain readers.

They'll probably gain very polite, undemanding, thankful readers in the case of a friendship story about two characters who are put together all the time.

For me, I like an assortment of genres. Even if I liked romance the best, only reading it would be like eating one food all the time--boring. Asking for variety only makes fics better. Why you gotta take it so personally?

Sometimes it'd be nice to see some best friends in fics without any of the sexual subtext.

Sometimes it would be nice for some people to be able to write what they want with out getting bitched at.

After being in there and reading the comments, I'm rather on the side of dinogrrl saying "Can there also be genfics?" rather than "friendship only!". I'm quite in favor of certain pairings having more genfics. Arcee/Springer, for instance, and the ever-present ever-annoying Alexis/Starscream.

If I can get less lazy and apathetic, and more "into fandom" again, I'd like to start a gen-fic LJ community. I've thought about it before. Maybe get together with me over AIM, RoseHip and jolt me out of my apathy?

I was on the rant, and in general agreement with dinogrrl, actually. I think people are blowing this waaaay out of proportion. She may have wordeded it less than perfect, but I think the sentinement here is *not* entitlement "write what I want!" but more of "Gee, it would really be nice to see more of what I want."

As a primarily gen writer/gen reader, I tend to find the good stuff lost in a sea of fics focusing romance and/or sex, even when I *do* look in the "right places." Sex sells, and those of us who just aren't as interested in it as the rest of the world seems to be sometimes have trouble finding what we want. So, sometimes, we sigh and think "Wouldn't it be great if there were more fics that protrayed these two best friends as best friends, not lovers? Or these brothers as not lovers?"

I think I've seen all of only 2 or 3 fics in my beloved Trigun fandom where Vash and Wolfwood were the focused-upon characters where it *wasn't* a shonen-ai or yaoi. Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places, but I'd really like to see more fics of those two as-friends-not-lovers in stories focusing on them.

Why don't I write those myself? ..... I don't think I can characterize Wolfwood worth a fart. He's a difficult character for me to write whenever I try to.

*Looks above* Er. There are some things regarding both the nature of Vash and Wolfwood's relating to each other and Knives and Legato's relating to each other and manga-canon that I *could* argue... but I won't right now. Everyone has the right to their interpreation of things and I just don't feel like getting into a fight about it.

Some of us would just like to see more friendsfics in our fandoms. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

There's the fengenficathon on LJ, which is multi-fandom and, as the name implies, focuses on female characters. There's also Omniocular for HP gen (also links to a bunch of other HP gen comms in the profile. They have monthly challenges to keep the gen fic coming.

I don't see the problem with people wanting more genfic in a given fandom. If you're not really a shipper, it can get a little tiresome wading through archives full romance fic. Should nobody ever write romance because I'm in the mood for some gen? No, of course not.

And one of the posters made a good point: you COULD just write what you wanted to read...but I dunno about you, but I don't want to read my own writing. That kind of argument is like saying, "I don't have any friends" and someone replying, "Then talk to yourself!"

THANK YOU!

I honestly read romance fic and skip out before the sex sometimes because it's so difficult to find good stories focusing on friendships (or, what I prefer, adversarial relationships becoming friendships). I write it myself, but I don't re-read my fic for pleasure -- or ever if I can help it, since it'll make me want to edit it the millionth time.

What I marvel at is the sheer number of fans who will religiously follow a show for the subtext, but never, ever appreciate "mere" subtext in fan written story. Then again, a lot of genficcers actually mean Not Even Canon Relationships, instead of simply trying to be as true to canon as possible and therefore not write in the romance genre. So, yeah, both sides annoy me sometimes.

How the hell is "I've seen this rant too much" any excuse for assuming the OP was being a fantard when she's being reasonable? How do you survive on FanficRants? Because I can tell you that all the rants are all just rehashings, possibly with a new pairing applied to the "Stop making masculine character into weepy uke!" or "Stop bashing this female character!" How did she not explode by this point?
