Because someone had to do it...
Imagine if one of the biggest BNFs in one of the biggest and wankiest fandoms was found out to have systematically trolled, wanked and manipulated her friends - using a series of high profile sockpuppets - over a period of several years in order to gain fannish status.

Imagine if someone wrote up a comprehensive set of reports (comprising around 90,000 words) detailing and explaining every aspect of this behaviour and exposing it to general fandom for the first time.

Then imagine if it was corroborated by various well-known fandomers.

This is the (alleged) Msscribe story. Also showing at a [info]bad_penny near you.

Ooh, had it gotten wanky since last night? I mean like hystronics wanky - the whole compiling all this data doesn't so much count for me, YMMV. Mostly there was just [info]fbp or whatever his name is fapping a bit before being banned.

That's...sort of a really impressive compilation. (Though it reminds me of the discussion some time back about talking about liars online - either you provide everything and looked like an obsessed person, or you don't give backup and people say you obviously have no evidence.)

I'm not even in HP fandom and I couldn't stop reading. I'm such a research whore. But, as an outsider, it is oddly comforting to know that HP fandom is not crazy as a whole and 50% of the batshit was one person.

Lesson I got:

Everybody expects trolls. Everybody expects one or two sockpuppets to show up. Nobody expects their friend/cohort/buddy/pal to totally snow them and stir up shit just because they can

Fans were united, and met other fans through it, and fic and porn was shared, created and read. Okay, so I click the link and I read some posts and maybe it's just because I spend too much time outside, away from the computer, but I really really am not getting what the splooge is all about. The timeline isn't helping, since it looks just like my history textbook and is about as long.

Anyone want to give me a summary? Twenty words or less? Then maybe I'll be better able to get personally invested.

This really was an interesting, and in a lot of ways disturbing read. I guess I was silly in that I'd always just assumed that the way to become a BNF was to just write an influential fic at the right time and place, not carefully orchestrate a group of sock puppets to endear you to the public at large.

Oh man, I just can't read that thing. I want to know all about it, but I can't find it in myself to be interested. This is like trying to get through the bloody fifth book all over again.

Anyway, fandom has imploded on itself before and survived. It'll pass. I'm definitely glad I got out of the HP fandom when I did, though.
