The World Cup brings out the Elite Monsters in them...
http://community.livejournal.com/footballslash/445466.html

[info]footballslash gets closed for new members while the World Cup still lasts, because If you are serious about joining the community now, you'll be just as serious next week.

People get pissed:

like [info]dork_elf:
These folks are enthusiastic and joyful about footballslash in a way that, frankly, most of the continuous membership isn't anymore. How refreshing is it to have people around who want to share in the things we enjoy, who want to meet new folks, and aren't looking down on people. The whole 'you're not a real fan' thing is no fun to be on the receiving end

Same user, another comment:
We're the only community for it, and we have a small window of opportunity to cultivate a good relationship with new fans. Telling them 'cross your legs until WE think you've proven your interest' may not kill their interest in football or slash, but I know it would hve killed my interest in this community when I was new.

[info]sapphireblue88 is affected by the new rule and comments too:
when I first read this message, I thought of the Portugal/Netherlands match where the ref just lost control of the game. Closing off membership is like giving out a red card for a dive in the midfield; it accomplishes nothing and is just frustrating.

That one gets a replay by moderator [info]rwrockdj that would get a red card too, and does not help at all
It's not about annoyance. We deal with things that annoy us all the time, but we will not stand for offensive and insulting behavior.
