THE POISSON MUST BE FRESH! ([info]rotten_fish) wrote in [info]fandom_wank,

"It's not about you it's about the fandom!"
Over on FFR, [info]overlord_mordax posts a rant (well, obviously) that can summed up in a few key sentences:

"I find authors who refuse to allow fanfiction to be written, frankly, offensive. It is an insult to your fanbase, it is an insult to the history of narrative, and it is an insult to the authors own skill... Yes, I think that fanfiction authors are the bards of our time, wandering between the colonies of the internet, telling their stories paid only in coins of praise tossed into their hats... All stories are fanfiction, permutations of the natural narrative forces that flow within our souls...In my mind there is only one honest reason an author can give for disallowing fanfiction involving their characters, [sic] They’re afraid. Afraid that their fans can write better stories than they can, that their fans know the characters better than their canon authors do, can bring them to life in prose in ways that would turn the author green with envy."

Okay, so I added some simply because they were hilarious. You got me.

But what is FFR's reaction? Pretty tame, actually, even with hilarious comments like this. Hey, it's possible. The Wachowskis didn't steal everything from Sophie Stewart. But I'm not saying you shouldn't read the FFR post, because it's completely worth it. Tl;dr in parts, but there are numbered lists!

So where's the wank? Why, it's on our very own [info]fandom_discuss! Boom.

Responses include, "no harm, no foul!" "The law can fuck off," "You don't deserve to have fans if you don't let them write fanfiction!," "The laws are stupid," ""What they don't know won't hurt them!" and many, many instances of "I don't like Anne Rice this person, so I don't care what they say anyway! D:<" A lot of people bring up buttsex, because apparently that's why some authors don't like fanfiction or something, and there should be a buttsex law, I'm telling you.

Also, writers should not have free time, even if that free time includes hanging out with those fans of yours. And [info]pyratejenni is everywhere, like the love child of the Energizer Bunny and Nightcrawler. "Mark my words, fandom!" and I couldn't even follow this conversation.

The most hilarious part of this entire report? [info]overlord_mordax has been wanked before. For hating on Terry Pratchett for being "anti-story" in his Discworld Witch books, most of which are rewrites of fables whose messages Pratchett's witches destroy. Either the irony is hot and sexy, or you got punk'd, FFR and [info]fandom_discuss.

Yes, [info]overlord_mordax is here. Don't worry, you can still make fun of her!

ETA: NO. BAD DOGGIE. NO TROLLING THE WANKS. NO BISCUIT! NO BISCUIT!

:thud:

I admit, I think that the copyright laws have gotten ridiculously complicated and agree with [info]overlord_mordax that this is a normal narrative practice that it's kind of unnatural to try to stop, but sheesh, this is a living for some people, and yes creators can be sued by fans if something bears too close a resemblance. It's a nuisance suit and the fan won't (in all likelihood) win, because the better a fic is, the more likely it is to be written by someone who pays attention to the canon tropes, and the more attention is paid to canon tropes, the more likely it is that you may stumble across one of the actual lines that the author is playing out and start goofing around with it--in other words trying to prove that an author stole an idea from you while you were playing around with her ideas in the first place is hard enough without also having the issue of it only being plagiarism if the expression of the idea is the same having to be proved--but look at the way some fen go on and on about how someone or other "obviously" stole an idea from someplace. The suits would happen and would waste everyone's time and money, as well as casting aspersions on character.

In other words, aside from wanky people like Anne Rice, there are perfectly sane people who don't want fanfic because they know perfectly well that fandom is batshit insane. And running around talking about how an original creator has no rights in regard to his or her own universe... not the way to change that perception!

I think the biggest problem some fans have with authors doing what is their right is this:

Omg! I write SUPAR SEXXY DRACCO* IN LEATHER PANTZ! SMEXY! OMG! Author hates :(((((( I may not write anymore :((((( WOE! How dare anyone suggest me to actually write a story using original characters instead of writing a fanfic? I can't do that, I would lose a fandom as an easy way to get readers and lots of positive comments. WOE! LETS REBEL AGAINST THESE OPPRESSIVE AUTHORS >=(((((

*replace with a character in these omg!mean author controlled fandoms.

Seriously. There's a ton of authors who don't care what fanficcers do. Just write for these. It really ain't hard to respect the wishes of an author. Without them the thing you're obsessing about wouldn't exist.

Oh, I write fanfic as well, by the way, so no, I am not saying this as an evil!enemy of fanfiction ^_-

Making Light not long ago had two very long disscusions posts on fanfic and the issues and the real arguments, not the infantile crap fandoms often use as an excuse; plus the correcting of many myths about fanfic and copyright from experts. Recomended reading before wading into any fanfic debate.

Yes, I think that fanfiction authors are the bards of our time, wandering between the colonies of the internet, telling their stories paid only in coins of praise tossed into their hats... Here's a thought - maybe authors want you to read the book instead of write your own with their characters. Just as a random thought ... they've spent hours and hours and HOURS slaving away over this book, editing and rewriting, and hey, they go online and find a poorly written, grammatically horrific buttsecks story with two of their characters. Might they feel a little bit miffed? I think so.

Not that I think fanfiction is bad, mind you. But I can at least understand the ethos. Especially if they asked you not to write fanfiction. I know, I know, spoilsports and devils that they are ...

And, by the way? "Permutations of the natural narrative forces that flow within our souls"? ...please tell me you didn't meant that.

What I find interesting is that sizable chunk of the anti fanfic writers used to be one themselves.

My question is, why are these authors concerned with what others are writing and not bound to their desks producing books for me to occupy myself with so I don't have time to write any fanfic about them?

In my mind there is only one honest reason an author can give for disallowing fanfiction involving their characters, [sic] They’re afraid.

CHALLENGE! Yo DJ! Cue Michael Jackson's "Beat It!"

[info]overlord_mordax and Anne Rice should have a dance-off. Then, and only then, will we ever know WHO'S BAD.

Sadly, there’s a big difference between what copyright law actually permits and what one thinks it ought to permit. Confusing the two will only result in wank.

*nervously eyes certain overlong thread up above*

So, any bets on how long it takes for this to get posted to [info]wankitywank?

There was one line from one of the posts that kind of gave me the giggles. Itals mine --

Many authors write their great masterworks and don't get published, and many more don't get fandoms because enough people (or more importantly, enough fanfic writers) don't read their stuff.

Mmm, must talk to my agent about this. My publisher isn't sending enough ARCs to fanfic writers.

(runs away giggling some more)
