Beyonce vs. PETA
Not the latest news, but interesting nonetheless.

Beyonce was confronted by two members of PETA for using fur in her (and her mother's) joint clothing line. Originally, the activists had won an auction, the prize being a dinner date with the diva- but Ms. Knowles had no idea where they were from. The whole scenario was caught on video here.

WankDebate in the IMDB board follows.

The first thread

ChildofDestinyUK:
"This is where PETA are going wrong. I would never wear real fur and I think the way they kill those animals is very wrong and disgusting but you can't go around imposing your beliefs on other people."

Rhuman:
"What annoyed me the most was that she just sat there. Not a single word. Didn't try to justify herself or anything. She's obviously clueless or at heart she knows that she's wrong. She obviously felt a bit guilty about her actions"

Jessa:
"We don't *need* animals for food or clothing, no matter what your mama told you. There's a big difference between what we WANT/PREFER, and what we actually NEED."

cheluzal:
"All you who say animals shouldn't be killed, I hope you're all vegetarians!"

The current discussion currently is here.

where

keewannab:
WHO DECIDES WHAT YOU WEAR!!! ANIMALS AIN'T WORRYING ABOUT YOU WHEN THEY TRYING TO EAT YOUR A@@ UP!!!

</b>mocha babbee:</b>
people are going to wear, whether you like it or not! No one is manipulating the animals, in case you didnt know it, animals really dont have that high of an intelligance!!!lol!!!!!

"All you who say animals shouldn't be killed, I hope you're all vegetarians!"

That right there is the winner of the classic "Where the fuck did that argument come from?" category.

I mean, seriously. WTF does that have to do with the argument at hand?

Meh, I was going to delete for being slightly bitchy, but who cares? These are great wanky fen. They deserve to be snarked at.

"What annoyed me the most was that she just sat there. Not a single word. Didn't try to justify herself or anything. She's obviously clueless or at heart she knows that she's wrong. She obviously felt a bit guilty about her actions"

Or maybe she was raised properly, and knows better than to insult her guests... as opposed to her guests, who were clearly not taught that one does not insult one's host, whatever one's political opinions are. Sheesh. Didn't anyone teach these guys basic etiquette? You're not going to change someone's mind by ambushing her unawares at what she anticipated would be a pleasant lunch. You'll only make your cause look bad and put her on the defensive. Make an appointment like a sane person to discuss the issue, and the present your case logically... unless, of course, you don't believe your case is logical, in which case you need to resort to cheap emotionalism.

Then again, maybe Ms. Knowles just learned the rule of dealing with people of this sort--smile, back away slowly, and don't make any sudden movements.

Ahh, gotta love PETA. They're like the Harmonians of the fashion industry. I'm anti-fur, but for the love of Bob I refuse to be associated with the batshititude. I just want to pick up a bullhorn and yell, "Stop making my side look insane!"

Furthermore, I have issues with people imposing their beliefs on others. I'm a vegetarian, and people who aren't are constantly asking me if it offends me if they eat meat in front of me. I'm like, "No... why should it?" As long as they're not stuffing it down my throat why should I care?

And on a related note, i can't decide what makes me lose more faith in the human race, IMDB wank or [info]ohnotheydidnt wank.

I highly recommend the PETA episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit! I wasn't having any of PETA's jive after that unforgivable chicken farm = concentration camp ad campaign, but there's plenty more asshattery where that came from (hypocrisy about benefitting from animal-tested medications, funding domestic terrorism, adopting animals just to euthanize them). Plus Penn and Teller wear lots of leather and attempt to feed fried chicken to a chicken.

Jesus. Just reading these sorts of PeTA-wanks just makes me want to eat bacon-wrapped beef-patties while wearing a fur-lined leather coat.

Really, I accept and wear fur. It's not because of fashion or just because I'm an animal-hating whore though, so much as fur is the only item that seems to keep me warm in the winter. I don't really mind anyone else's position on the pro/anti-fur argument so long as they don't attempt to ruin my favorite jacket and bug me about lunch.

Anyway, PeTA's anti-pet stance has left me extremely wary of the company in general. Some animals are so thoroughly domesticated, letting them free to live in the wild would just lead to a rise in dead small animals.

Eh. I am anti-fur and I wish I could stop eating meat (not even because I feel sorry for animals, but because I simply hate the taste) but can't due to health reasons and such stuff... long story, doesn't matter here. Anyway, my biggest problem with PETA is that, while our views are technically very similar, I disagree with their tactics. Batshit =/= hardly a way towards serious accomplishments. I mean, what happened to calm, sane conversations and such things? darkrose has already said it: It never fails to amaze me how PETA can take what should be a no-brainer--"Save the cute furry animals!"--and end up making even people who'd normally agree with that idea want to go out and club baby seals, just for spite. Frankly, doing something like that out of spite is not extremely intelligent either, but... metaphorically speaking, it's very true. *spits in humanity's general direction and skips away to look for some PoT wank*

I used to despise militant vegetarians like PETA, but now I appreciate their entertainment value. A few months ago there were heaps of them protesting some meat industry conference in Sydney, and MAN it was funny. They 'packaged' themselves in giant meat packages to show the horror of eating OMG MEAT BECUZ THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUMAN AND COW FLESH. They also chained themselves to an abattoir so they can get emo over 'the smell of death', until THEY called the cops because the abattoir owner was getting frisky with his propane torch. FUNNIEST SHIT EVER.

C'mon PETA. If you're gonna be batshit, be funny!

The batshit insane activists almost always make me shake my head and laugh. Almost always. Other times they make me cringe or gag or back away and flee.

On a side note, was it PETA or one of their sister groups who raised hell in Britain by releasing thousands of minks into the surrounding area a few years ago? I just remember seeing the reports of minks killing domesticated and even a few endangered animals before the local authority declared open season on the fuzzy little bastards.

Mmmhmmm. It's people like this that are the ones who don't allow deer hunting in their WV cabin community, despite the fact that the deer are so populous that they eat all the growth, so the trees die, and the forest falls.

*sends IMDB back to intro to bio* No predators = no limit on growth = over population = dumb.

Good Lord PETA never fails to amaze with their batshit, I mean really... I eat meat, I eat and drink dairy products I wear leather (don't wear fur however, but that's for personal fashion preference reasons rather then OMG THE CUTE AMINALS!?!) and I admit I'm not all that fond of Beyonce but DAMN do I feel sorry for her. Expecting a dinner with a greatful and eager fan and she gets layed into.
