GameFAQs FFT versus Disgaea wank
Well, over at the Disgaea 2 boards kingdestiny asks a basic question (if you can get through his English) 'If I liked Final Fantasy Tactics, will I like Disgaea?'. Most responses are what you'd expect from a bunch of Disgaea fanboys, but then some defenders of FFT show up and somehow it all turns into if Orlandu in FFT is too overpowering or not before veering back into FFT versus Disgaea again. Typical GameFAQs fanboy wank, but the random Orlandu digression makes it precious.

I make a a post detailing my feelings about FFT and Disgaea in the beginning, but am pretty much uninvolved with the rest.

Gah. What a cesspool. It's worse than IMDB even.

Stonerkid's sig:

wolverin : but cant the rador see are x-jet
cyclops : if the rador can see are x-jet we deserve to be caught

What is that? Is he mocking a badfic with it or what?

FFT = 4 year old boy who still breastfeeds

Disgaea = A man's man who gets laid every night, by different chicks.

Found this comment to be teh funneh, if only in light of Laharl's fear of boobies.

Wait, we were talking about the original FF Tactics? Cuz I thought we were talking about FFTA

*smacks head* Way to go, there.

And geez, they're both great games, and both worth playing. There's not too many TRPGs out there to begin with *still miffed that Front Mission 5 will probably not be coming out in the States*

I love Disgaea fanboys nobly dubbing it a "chess-like strategy game". Uh, sure. Just like chess.

I like the guy who says all he has to do to prove that Disgaea is deeper is point out that stats go into the hundreds of thousands.

Because clearly, big numbers automatically = deeper game.

and the max level is 9999 IIRC.

Getting to level 99 in most games is already more hours of my life than I should be sinking into it anyway. Even if the leveling goes somewhat faster to make up for it, I don't even want to think about trying to hit 9999.

It's much faster than reaching 99 in most games. You usually get several hundred levels at once for one group of enemies that you can easily arrange.

Don't ask me where the point is.

Each of the games made by NIS have ways of levelling up quickly. The trick is figuring out how to do it. Also, you don't really need to get that high to finish the game. IIRC I was at level 80-something Except for my titlist which was in the 200s when I finished Phantom Brave.

Disgaea...deep?

You mean I don't play Disgaea to see demon penguins make purdy colorful explosions when I throw 'em?

Oh come one, people. Throwing and geopanels have a hell of a lot of strategy in the item levels, I'll give 'em that, but Disgaea's the TBS game you play when you want to see things go kablooey or totally make out with Jennifer or Captain Gordon.

Well, there is a bit of strategy involved if you want to get a specific ending. Maybe that's what they were talking about?

...and I liked Phantom Brave more.

OH SHI- Someone who liked Phantom Brave more than Disgaea?! Where have you been all of my life?

I really thought I was the only one, but I guess I like the idea of cute phantoms and pretty bright colors more than others. :< Yay.

I mean, don't get me wrong. The interraction between the Disgaea and Phantom Brave characters? Beautiful. I actually giggled like mad during that scene, I wouldn't mind Ash being Laharl's vassal, NOPE. but I always found PB to be more entertaining and heartwarming. (Not to mention a lot more coherent than Disgaea.)

I guess its a matter of taste and expectation. I didn't know what to expect from Phantom Brave, and it left me happy and bittersweet at the end. I think they pulled off the ending beautifully, can't say the same with Disgaea's story, though.

... Infact, I just try to remind myself that Disgaea's story is a blender of EVERYTHING, so not to take it seriously. (Y halo thar TENTACLES, Jennifer! What's that? HUMAN INVADERS? HORSE WEINERS AS GOD ITEMS? Oh yeah.)

I also rather like Phantom Brave more than Disgaea, though a lot of it is because Phantom Brave was the first NIS game I played and Disgaea came after. (I'm actually further in Disgaea because I lent out my PB in return for Disgaea, but eh) I liked the story better in Phantom Brave, but I also liked the weapon and title system. It seemed a lot less grindy than Disgaea's, and bonus EXP for EVERYONE at the end? YES PLZ

I actually like Failure Dungeons, but only after you beat the main game. Can't level Marona? Make a failure dungeon and watch her break items down there! That's the best way to level her if you don't want her to die to ERINGA!Baal.

Then again, if a battle last longer than Ash's 5 turns, I'm seriously screwed. xD

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]eclair
2006-07-04 06:39 am UTC (link)
Yep! I found out by accident, all you have to do is make Marona attack the items in a failure dungeon. She gets all of the exp, its amazing. GREAT way to level her since uh, items can't bite her back. Its fun going into a 2000 levelled dungeon, giving her Ash's sword, and watch her whack some weeds and stuff.

(It levels her fast because while the monsters in the dungeon have crappy exp, the items are not affected by the failure title. So you'll be essentially killing something that's level 2000 for freee.)

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]marsdragon
2006-07-04 10:57 pm UTC (link)
Yeah, though the trick is you have to have her slightly powerful already, since the items tend to be stronger HP/DEF-wise than the monsters.

I fooled around with failure dungeons a little last time I had the game, but it was more for seeing what they were about. I was so much happier when I learned how to really combine and title, though. Oh man. (like I said, first NIS SRPG...I didn't know anything. Like how to abuse the system.)

Pfft, Marona? Powerred?
I just make Ash's weapon bloody powerful and throw it at her. She can kill anything. Its actually kinda cute to watch.

[info]marsdragon
2006-07-05 01:46 am UTC (link)
Or you could do that, yes. But I like to make her her own special weapons so Ash can go off and slaughter on his own without passing the weapons back and forth. I go through great effort to preserve my laziness.

I liked them both the same, mostly... although it took two playthroughs. Kinda dissapointed the first time around since it wasn't that much like Disgaea, but after common sense beat me around a bit, I liked it a lot more. Plus it's got some awesome character designs.

...Wow. This debate never gets old.
Hmn, uh. They're both really fun games if you're into SRPGs? In all honesty, FFT had really great mechanics. (Even if I couldn't understand what the hell the game was going on about half the time, it was still fun if you liked SRPGs.)

I love Disgaea, but I think with games like these you have to actually pick it up and see for yourself if its for you. The games definetly feel different. Then again, I totally made the mistake of picking up Hoshigami, expecting something like FFT after hearing all the reviews. Yeah, no. Its also the reason I can't pick up Stella Deus, the scars are still fresh.

blahblah.

I remember back when it was announced I was...all excited about Hoshigami.

...yeah.

I actually picked up an imported copy of FFT to see if the plot was more coherent in Japanese, and mostly learned that 1) archaic usages are a bitch, and 2) reading kanji in that game's font is a bigger bitch. A friend of mine did full retranslations of a few key scenes, though, and just looking at those it's really nifty to see how much there is to it that was lost in translation. (And kind of saddening. If there was ever a game I wanted a full rerelease with a redone translation of, it's FFT.)

I think that someday when nuclear holocaust wipes us all out, there will still be fanboy atoms arguing about whether Orlandu ruins the game or not.

Even in the 'translated' version, you can spot hugeass translation errors. C'mon, 'defeat Dycedarg's elder brother'? Classy, translators, classy.

And the tutorial was a MESS. So was the quest-mode dialogue.

And they actually CUT the frickin' unit quotes. You know, how when you select a special unit, like, say, Agrias, and she says, "Evanesence... such a sad word...", the random dudes you could hire said random stuff, too.

THE ART. I BLAME THE ART.
Seriously, that was some *very nice* art for that game! I really liked the portraits and the character designs. Atlus made the game sound so... so cool! It took me a few years before I could ever forgive them for that.

You know, SRPGs have really long battles. If game developers know this, they should realize making crappy battle music is not a good way to keep fans. Holy shit. I stopped 5 minutes into the first battle.

Good lord, Orlandu. The fanboys won't have to worry about ua nuclear holocaust because they can survive it much like the cockroaches do. Who needs heads when there's arguments to be given about Orlandu? (I do love the guy, I really do. But man. I'm glad I don't look at FFT boards, it scares me to even think about it.)

I remember seeing Hoshigami and thinking "I like FFT..." But mercifully the now-defunct GIA reviewed it scathingly enough that I never picked it up.

God, I love TG Cid. And always suspected that if it were actually translated well, there was something pretty cool underneath in FFT. I think it's the last real translation disaster that I can remember--their localizers have also gotten so much better.

I miss the GIA, I remember they closed down on April 1st, so everyone thought it was a joke for a while...

I think even with a proper translation (oh man, which reminds me - my brother bought the Japanese FFT guide and made me read it to him. The Japanese in FFT is not beginners, that's for sure.) the ending would still leave me boggled and confused.

So I just think "FFT - Square's version of Hamlet" and let it be.

Even through the shitty translation, I think I actually understood Delita's last comments. Something like "Ramza, what did you get out of all of this blood/pain/crap/etc.? All I've got is a depressing kingship and now a dead chick's body to dispose of..."

(okay, that's a little more flippant treatment of it)

I dunno about anyone else.

But I did not like Disgaea's gameplay for being deep.
I liked it for being able to do 5 billion damage to half of everything with a laughing midget demon riding on a giant meteor.

And CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH!

And exploding penguins and Midboss and-okay I'll stop now.

Damn, I couldn't have said it better myself. There is something awesomely hilarious about a maniacal midget in hotpants wiping out the entire EDF fleet as a second thought, and then getting shit from his girlfriend about it immediately afterwards

That, and it picks up on its own subtext (Oh my, Prince, I didn't know you were into that)

*Ahem* Anyway, as for FFT, there was something very D&D about it which made me joygasm in glee. Story? What story? Look at my crazy-ass multiclassing options, dammit!
