The P5 Strike Again!
In one thread, the folks on this comics board get in all the good jabs at us Perverted Plagiarist Pedophile Potter Pornographers. However, the Boston Globe article she references is actually halfway decent, and doesn't assume that all HP slashers are freaks.

ETA: It gets better! I've been told never to darken their doorstep again. The moderatrix claims that she's being "abused" here. Flooding! Trolling! She brings out the FW Bill of Rights to beat me over the head with! I am vastly amused.

Oh, the irony...

Well, except for DARKROSE anyway. I could have posted a link to her/his profile, but won't. S/he may not abide by her own rules, but I will.

Ever helpful, I posted a link to my JF profile. I doubt she'll be amused, somehow.

It's probably a statement to my own sick twistedness that that part of the article compelled me to google "snape/sorting hat" until I found that fic.

No, I am not a publisher, but I have been asked to read strangers' work for evaluation. And I've known a few editors (and by extention, their trials) in my time.

This is roughly equivalent to saying, "I'm not a doctor, but I've put bandaids on people before. Oh, and I KNOW some doctors. Turn your head and cough."

The ff authors obviously have taken her characters and corrupted and viled them. If JKR's characters existed in the real world, they would be suing the rears of these ff authors for libel.

Harry, Ron and Hermione are being corrupted by those vile ff.net bastards! Why isn't anyone fighting to protect them!? WHY DOESN'T ANYONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?

In the interests of full disclosure, I did once recently attempt a piece of fanfic as an experiment. I had intended to write an article about the experience (and I may yet do), but I was so uninspired by the process of using other people’s characters that I never finished the thing.

In other words: I think fanfiction is trite and silly and a waste of time, at to "prove" this I shall half-assedly diddle around on my own for the bare minimum of time required to claim that "I tried and failed."

What the heck is this bit about "magical aging"? I've read quite a few HP fanfics, and I don't remember seeing characters being "magically aged." They're just...

...older.

Not to say that it's not possible there are stories out there that DO magically age the characters. But somehow, I just don't think that's what the article meant. Unless, like a lot of these articles about HP fanfiction, the author went out of their way to find a story with that oddity, so they could hold it up as a norm in the fandom.

But for the love of whatever God, if you aspire to any kind of creative career, leave the fan stuff behind.

Okay, everyone who has a friend is published/is in the process of getting published original work, and also writes fanfiction - or is in that position themselves - say "aye."

...

AYE!

Nay, however - If I WERE going to seek publishing, and people, say, googled me and said "OMG you once wrote fanfiction for fun on your own time YOU ARE UNCLEAN!!!!!"

...I wouldn't want to be associated with such hellacious wankers anyway. It's a freaking hobby. People who freak out about hobbies like that strike me as joyless pricks nine times out of ten.

Well, she could be referring to the Snape/Hermione stories that have Hermione aged a year (or two, or three) from overuse of the Time Turner, in order to make her eighteen (or whatever the age of consent in wherever the author lives).

Oh, and AYE! :-)

Well I think that the fact that Rowling ages her characters and allows them to grow and change, completely undermines her self-rightousness. I mean how she make herself sound important with people using 'logic' and facts.

I mean since Harry started the book out as a naive 11 year old that's how the series is gonna end. It doesn't really matter that Rowling has the characters age, or that many fans usually set stories with adult content and themes after they've graduated.

Cause children don't turn into adults.

Okay, everyone who has a friend is published/is in the process of getting published original work, and also writes fanfiction - or is in that position themselves - say "aye."

Super late, but even published authors still 'fanfic' in a way--Ray Bradbury constantly writes about other characters already established in classical literature. Heck, he even writes about the authors like they are characters. OMGWTFBBQ!!!11111

And then, let's not talk about those wacky Japanese artists, who, despite having their own popular published series and stuff, do OMGWTFBBQ FANART/FANCOMICS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S STUFF!1111

Ugh. --; You know, in the comic books industry, if you're a slave an employee of one of the Big Three or something, you're doing 'fanart.' No, the original creator of Batman is not still creating those Batman comics you're reading, yo.

Prime example: One of the most recent things the creator of Excel Saga (Koshi Rikdo [sp?]) put out were sets of multi-fandom doujinshi, some which included things like XENOSAGA HENTAI. And Xenosaga is a MUCH more recent release than Excel Saga.

He's also drawn Sonic Adventure series gijinka H and CLAMP H (Chobits and Angelic Layer) pictures (both for doujin books and doujin pencilboards), for that matter.

Oh, and let's not forget his sexy/ecchi pics of his own characters in those Excel Saga-only doujin artbooks of his, either.

The people in this wank are so full of themselves that it's almost not funny.

what a twit. because she tried to write fanfiction and couldn't, it's therefore useless and a waste of time?

Now, I'll grant you that I wouldn't use my fanfiction efforts to try to get an agent, or to a publisher to get accepted. That's not because my fanfiction isn't good (I certainly hope it is! Unlike the majority of FFNet ninnies, I wouldn't slap just anything up for reading), but because of the legal grey area of fanfiction as legal or illegal.

Oh, and I loved the "fanart is good, fanfiction is baaaad" arguement. As well as the "you're not an editor... well, neither am I, but I know some" comment. Gee, pretentious much?

Well, this is a "Small press and webcomics" forum, I think, so in theory they could be as "pro" as me and several other people here.

But the two people I DID notice were Lea Hernandez (who's a pretty damn good writer, and worked on the translation for Evangelion, if I remember right) and Shaenon is the screen-name of Shaenon K. Garrity, who writes and draws a comic called Narbonic. And I assume, from context, that L Jonte does something called "Athena Jayne"...yep, she does. Never heard of it before, though.

And that's all I recognized on my brief run through...
