World Cup Champions... of wank
I haven't seen any finals wank yet, so I hope you don't mind that I brought my own. *insert first wank/virgin cliches here*

So, for the soccer watching public out there, last night's final of the World Cup was filled with extreme wank potential in its own right. There was the dubious first penalty and Zidane's sending off and the final penalty shoot out, right? If there was any wank about it, surely it would have been more about those incidents than anything else, right? Right?

Only, some Australians on the Sydney Morning Herald website don't really see it that way.

I can't really link to individual comments on that page, but here's a selection of the wankiest cuts.

I suppose I should also offer some background for non-Australians/people living in Australia. Italy beat Australia about two weeks ago in extra time with a controversial penalty decision by the referee that had a lot of football fans in Australia shouting about how the Italians had bought their way into the quarter-finals.

Fair enough, some people might say. Turn off the TV and forget about the World Cup until 2010, maybe?

I refuse to recognise italy as world cup champs.
I do, however recognise their panzy type of play and stunt dives.
Go to the oscars instead.

Italy paid Billions of EURO to the referees!!! This final was just disgusting.

And we have national stereotypes as well!
i think Italy doesen't deserve to win. and i think the cup going to Ital is not a good thing for world football. I feel they cheated their way out. After all, what's happening in their home says it all........... a sad day for football, and a very sad day for one of the greatest in football who fall in a cheap trick of an italian - a typical italian. . i must say!

All you proud Italians make me laugh - the most corrupt football league in the world as will be shown in the next few weeks as all the top teams get relegated. And the players that play in those corrupt teams make up 90% of the national side ! Italy should never have been allowed to take the field because of their domestic situations let's hope justice is seen to be done and the trophy is stripped from them in the months to come.

Well maybe the Socceroos did, but the fans sure didn't.
Italy gracefully threw themselves at the ground in the earlier rounds but France took diving to an artistic new level in the semi and final. Ronaldo almost got Portugal into the final with his brilliant solo diving performance. Not to be tactically out competed Italy resorted to the racist comment to win the World Cup. Hollow victory. Looking forward to the match fixing arrests.

Please to be making the rest of us Italy supporters not sound like total asses, kthx.

Can't believe some of you Occa's are still carring on like a bunch of 'bitches' ... but at the smae time I loving watching you babies cry.
Keep it up, it's the most fun I've had for ages!
But you have got a point, because you did deserve to win the World Cup.... NOTTT !!
Soccar-Who's?

Sick of all this Aussie whinging about a penalty that wasn't.....get over it - poor losers!!!!!

Hooray for sanity!
I'm an Aussie with no Italian heritage living in Rome and whilst I felt "cheated" about the Australia v Italy result and still remind the Italians that I know about Grosso's diving effort ...that's football. Bresciano took a dive to get Materazzi sent off in the same match and I think that MOST players would probably have made the same dive that Grosso did. Malouda took a dive to get his penalty in the final....Materazzi barely touched him. Footballers dive! Yes, even the Socceroos....just watch the English Premiership. I think, on balance, the final was quite evenly matched. Italy could have been 2 or 3 nil up, had a bit of luck been on their side. I agree with an earlier contributor that even if Australia had beaten Italy, I don't think that we would've gotten much further (maybe beaten Ukraine but that's about it). We need to be realistic about what it takes to become world champions...we have a lot more pain to go through first! Let's give the "cheating" theme a rest?

As an Australian, this blog is a quite embarrassing, hysterical and a little hypocritical. Get. Over. It.

My personal favourite, because in Sydney everyone's been driving around with Socceroos flags on their cars:
BREAKING NEWS!!!!!
A new FIFA directive has been issued to Oceania following todays conclusion of the 2006 World Cup:
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, TAKE THOSE STUPID BL00DY FLAGS OFF....
NOW!!!

And just for shits and giggles:
Zidane is my role model. All morning I've been following his example.
Too many people in the coffee queue? Bang, in with the head!
Difference of opinion? Oof, right in the sternum!
Secretary not typed up that document I asked for? Whomp, feel my noggin!
Come on people, I urge you, try "the Zizou kiss" for yourself - it really works!
Just make sure there are no cameras around.

It's like a veritable fountain of stupid that won't stop gushing! *insert obligatory joke about penises here* All I can say is, I'm glad this wank comes around only every four years. But yay for Luca Toni and Andrea Pirlo - I'd have their babies. But then I'm not into club football.

I don't think there's as much diving in English football as some other places, or at least not from our homegrown players. It tends to be more of a Continental thing. We're kinda polite. (Except for when you really piss us off, of course :D)

Seconded.
There have been things about the Italian soccer team (and many other teams/referees) that have annoyed me, but for crying out loud, they aren't that evil. Some of the commenters in the wank desperately need a sense of perspective.

Was I the only person whose immediate reaction to Australia losing to Italy was "thank God for no extra time"? ... It was 3am! I was tired ;)

I'm with the Aussies. Fuck those guys, cheated the whole way to the final; the cheats only made it out of group E and left the honest players behind. The Italian fans only sing when they're winning, and I'd like to remind everyone that there was one team Italy couldn't stop, even at 9 men.

Well, mostly I'm glad Portugal were the losers in the losers' finale. Big fat Dutch NYAH to you. Although I am happy to read that they're still partying about being fourth, it deserves a celebration.

And I was in favour in France. Kick out Australia in a ridiculous way, hmm?

With pictures like this and this, all I can say is "Viva Italia!"

Yes, I am exactly that shallow. After Spain and England choked, my loyalty pretty much went to whichever team was the prettiest and/or slashiest. And there's no way Italy's not winning that one.

Say, I have a question since we have people from all over dah woild here. I was recently having a conversation with my dad about the World Cup and our country's reaction to it, which is to say: almost nil. (As if you couldn't guess, I live in the US).

I opined that Americans in general just don't really give a fig about international competition and if you asked the average Joe on the street, he'd probably take his local football/basketbal/baseball/hockey team winning it all over the US winning in soccer (or even basketball or baseball, to pick sports that are more popular here).

Dad said he wasn't so sure about that and he thought it likely that your average non-American probably would feel similarly about their local whatever winning as opposed to their country winning the World Cup.

So! Out of curiosity, is either of us close?

(I have always been interested in what I see as a US apathy towards int'l sporting events. I mean, we like to be all USA BABY WAHOO! but when it comes to int'l sports, not so much. Did anybody blink over the fact that we got booted from the baseball world cup? Baseball!!)

So, does anyone know what Materazzi said to Zidane? Because that was some three different kinds of 'wtf' right there....

Although I agree that the Socceroos got screwed, the thing that pissed me off the most about the Italy team was after they won the penalty kicks in the final they didn't immediately start stripping off their tops like a lot of other countries. Sure there was a lot of hugging but half-naked hugging is better.

So damn you Italians! Next time think of the female football fans! I bet France would have given us our slashy naked-ness.

I'm such an otaku... When I heard them mention Zidane while my husband was watching the finals, I was confused as to why they were talking about Final Fantasy 9 during the World Cup....

I'm commenting very late in the game (ha!), but I just want to say that this is the best thing I've ever seen to result from all of this:
