I think there's a Jurisimprudence Law about this.
[info]mbimomma posts a rant to [info]bad_rpers_suck. A lot of the rant has to do with how her (I'm assuming) game doesn't allow homosexual characters:

So here's the scenario:

*player decides to join RPG
*player agrees to every rule in the RPG, including keeping things canon and PG
*player plays for nearly a year
*player abruptly disappears without notice for two years, leaving people who had connections with his character playwise in RPG limbo
*player decides he's bored (admits this) and shows up claiming he wants to return
*player then says he left because of one rule in the RPG, which pretty much didn't allow him to have a gay character
*player goes off on a whiny rant about said rule, demanding the mods to remove it because he feels alientated
*player says this at the same time claiming that we're not keeping things canon in the show the RPG is based on (read: the show the RPG is based on didn't have any homosexual characters AND was a children's show. This is what the players agreed on)
*co-mod tells him the reasons for the rule and says that maybe this isn't the RPG for him (plus there's another half-canon RPG out there that'd probably make him feel more at home)
*player says he wants to rejoin THIS ONE because "it's unique in its own way"
*player throws hissy fit that the mods - despite their telling him that they don't care what his sexual orientation is but are abiding by what the REST of the RPG cast feels about this sort of situation (i.e. they prefer that there weren't any gay characters if we're keeping the place canon in accordance to the show itself)- are kissing up to a bunch of homophobes
*player leaves in said hissy fit, swearing he'll never return
*player then rants about it in his LJ, in the end making a public apology and thinking about joining
*haven't heard anything since

(Bold hers.)

While the general conesus is that the guy in the rant was a jerk, many BRPS regulars express the opinion that a no gay characters rule is arbitrary or that they wouldn't join a game that didn't allow gay characters. People debate staying canon vs. close-mindedness and they're off!

Pretty small, but entertaining enough.

I'm a die-hard slasher, but if the game rules say "no gay characters," the solution is really simple: don't join.

Or play a character whose sexuality is unknown and they could always be quietly gay in the player's mind and not have it show up in the game, unless the slashy aspect of playing is really important.

A comm's rules are a comm's rules, but I think the "children's show" excuse is a bad reason not to allow gay stuffs.

Agreed, pretty much. If you don't like the rules, then don't join. But I know I wouldn't join a game that disallowed gay characters.

Having said that? No gay is a stupid, stupid rule. I don't care if it is a kids TV show, it's not like gay = hard core sexxxing.

That's a perfectly valid point.

If they're so concerned about explicit sex (I'm assuming they're trying to fend off the obnoxious teenybop fen who must explicitly pair off everything and who make the rest of slash and yaoi fandom bang their heads on walls!), then says 'no explicit sex', or 'this RP is PG rated'. 'OMG NO GHEI' is a bit silly. Explicit sex is explicit sex, be it straight, gay or lesbian. Slashfen are no more or less likely to write explicit material than any other group.

...I had a point, really...

Sure it does. If you were running a STRICTLY canon My Little Pony rp that wanted to keep the original flavor of the cartoon, you wouldn't have any gay characters, canon or OC, either.

*gasp* You mean the Ponies aren't the hot-pink-heart of every Gay Parade?!

I'm curious to know how they know that there are no gay characters in the show (whatever it may be since the OP only says it's a 90s cartoon show). In most shows I can think of for most characters it's unknown if they're straight or gay unless they're canonly paired up with someone of the opposite sex.

So say if you were running a Jem RPG or a Captain N rpg, it would be 100% canon to have no gay canon characters.

~snort~ Oh, yeah. Jem is totally not femmeslashy at all. Kimber and Stormer? Just rillyrillyrilly good friends. Clash? 100% straight. Roxy too.

Also, FWIW, I've set up my horrible, tacky G-3 Butterfly Island ponies as the Butterfly Island Brothel, run by Madame Shell-Belle, who is the tackiest of them all and, I'm convinced, the official pony of Panama City, FL.

[info]mbimomma tries to explain and just digs the hole deeper in my opinion.

In the cartoon and in the RPG itself, yes, all the characters are straight. Not a single one of our players has a gay character.

This cartoon was back in 1994, and no, it wasn't an Anime.

TEH GAY ONLY EXISTS IN ANIME FOLKS! AMERICAN CARTOONS WOULDN'T HAVE GAY!

By "PG" I meant keeping it clean 'in general'. I.e., I don't want to see people getting into situations that wouldn't be appropriate for young eyes

Must not wank on how much i hate the idea that gay = inappropriate for children. Must. Not. Wank.

What bothers me in this case was that he was basically trying to force me into changing this particular rule for him by tossing in the "I feel oppressed" card, even if I told him dozens of times that his sexual orientation didn't bother anybody in the least, but at the same crossed that fine line of "leave real world politics where they belong - in the real world".

In other words, homosexuality is controversial. Straight sex isn't.

For all she knows her straight canon characters could have secretly been into all sorts of kinky shit, but hey, long as it's straight sex...

*mops up*

The rule would make more sense in an RPG based on a canon where sexuality, any sort of sexuality, was expressed. If it's a kids show with a bunch of asexual characters, why just say "hey kiddies, cut down on the romance? It's kinda not canon."

I'm trying to think of any kids shows I watched (late eighties/early nineties) where any romance was displayed.

I've come across many a game that stated in the rules no gay or no het characters and if I don't feel like playing one, then I simply don't join.

Equally I've come across many who the moment they're told the rules won't bend to them burst out into your pick of 'ZOMGOPREZZION'. In a Trek RPG I was in, a guy posted this disturbing pedophilia post where the kid was the instigator and when the GM booted him, he went around claiming everyone who agreed with the GM was obviously a homophobe which was how the majority of us found out he was gay.

Scary thing is it's been years since this happened and the guy's still carrying the bitterness.

I don't see what the big deal is with someone not allowing gay characters in their RP. Guess what folks, not everyone is down with homosexuality. If you want to have some hot man on man or woman on woman love, then either join another RP or do it privately with other people in the RP and don't let it on ICly.

It may not be right, but it is the choice of the game owner/mods. I've seen Slash RPs that down allow het characters, RPs that down allow characters to be christian, Rps that down allow characters to be human and so on. Who cares.
