"Waaah! Someone's reviewing my fic on their journal and it's not NICE!"
Over on LJ, [info]oulangi's been posting her reviews on SS/HP stories.

Ptyx doesn't like it.

"Frankly? I wish I could prevent [info]oulangi from commenting my fics. Not because she's mocking some of the fics she reads (which is a behaviour I don't approve of), but because I wouldn't like people to read my stories through the filter of her reviews. She's intelligent and witty, but she's just a reader. She has her preferences. Your reaction to my story might be very different from hers, but if you start reading it after reading her comment, I'm afraid this will affect your experience. I can't prevent that, I know. But I don't like the whole idea." .

Or does she?

Personally I don't think it's refreshing, because I don't want to be spoiled or be influenced before reading a story. But I confess if she mocked one of those stories that everyone recced and that I hated, I would be very happy. But this is just my bad side, the side that I don't want to show to fandom, because that's not what I think fandom is about."

It's a little late for that, snickerdoodle. You just did.

People, of course, agree. There's even a pseudo-sly 'threat' from kaiz

By the same token, people who post public reviews of fic also have to be prepared for any response...

Heh. Inverydeed! ::veg::>

[info]white_serpent, [info]darkrose and [info]kyuuketsurui give pointing out [info]oulangi's doing this on her own LJ the old college try, to no avail.

ETA: There's responses!

From [info]sevs_lil_secret
I am going to offend some people with this post and at this point, I don't care because there are some on live journal that have forgotten what manners and courtesy mean. This is not targeted to everyone on my flist, most of you are decent and nice people. This... this is for the high and mighty few that think they are holier-than-thou.

So if you want to unfriend me after this, be my guest. If you don't... hugs and all that good stuff. Some of us have forgotten the fandom is supposed to be fun.

HOW DARE PEOPLE THINK IT'S CUTE AND AMUSING FOR SOMEONE TO RIP APART ANOTHER PERSON'S WORK??? THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO KNOW AND HOW EXACTLY IS IT A GOOD THING THAT THESE IDIOTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONTINUE???

WHEN THE HELL DID FANDOM BECOME A G-DAMN KINDERGARTEN???

IT'S SIMPLE IF YOU CAN'T SAY SOMETHING NICE SHUT YOUR FUCKING HOLE

DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET THE FACT THAT THERE ARE REAL PEOPLE BEHIND THESE STORIES? PEOPLE THAT YOU HURT.

LET ME SPELL THIS OUT TO YOU. NO ONE IS GETTING PAID TO DO THIS. WE DO IT FOR FUN, NOT FOR SIMPLE MINDED FUCKWITS TO RIP APART. IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE, RIP THINGS APART PRIVATELY, DON'T MAKE IT A GAME TO HURT OTHERS.

HEY YOU KNOW SOMETHING... IF YOU WANT.... COME RIP MY STORY APART, I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS. IT'S MY HOBBY. YOU CAN'T MAKE ME STOP. SO WHY DON'T YOU STOP ACTING LIKE YOUR ASS SMELLS LIKE ROSES AND WRITE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE ELSE TO RIP APART.

ETA 2: If someone would be kind enough to do screencapping, including these links, 'twould be greatly appreciated!

ETA 3: FILTEEREED! But she self-snitched a kinder, gentler tempter-tantrum. Thanks, ptyx!

Original post screencap. Small and hard to read, but there.

"Just a reader"?

Isn't that the target audience for written works?

Honestly, I like and agree with almost all her reviews. Further, she asks that you don't link her reviews to the author's story. Don't like, don't read? I fail to see what all the kerfluffle is about.

Damn, I thought I had the right way of responding to fanfic down pat. Let me try this again.

Okay, reviews that are just praise are not welcome, because they contain no concrit, and concrit is necessary for a writer's improvement.

But, on the other hand, reviews that do have concrit must contain a carefully measured percentage of actual constructive criticism to praise, because just concrit hurts the writer's feelings.

Also, concrit has an approximately 40% chance of being called a flame.

Also also, you are not allowed to offer concrit on "subjective" things like characterization, only on "objective" things like spelling and grammar.

But, on the other hand, commenting only on spelling and grammar instead of the "deeper" things like characterization is rude, because it seems you ignore all the effort the author has put into the story. What effort?

Also, questioning why this plot development happened in this chapter when there is no logical reason for the characters to do that is attempting to "control" the author's plotline. Apparently, fanfic readers who do this have discovered mind-rays.

But not commenting on the great plot twist is rude.

Don't like, don't read!

But, on the other hand, authors love feedback, and it's horrible that so many people read fanfic and don't leave feedback.

Attempting to review fanfic on your own journal, with no contact with authors, is rude. Don't like, don't review!

...Except that authors love reviews.

No, I still have a headache. And this would be why I don't review.

I've heard of Oulangi's reviews, because someone on my flist was saying that they liked how it gave them a starting point, that even though their opinion and her's didn't always mesh, she always gave enough info so they could easily pick the ones that they would probably like, even though she didn't, and vice versa.

*ponders* Is it just me, or does Ptyx, sound like she's trying for the "we must protect the children reader's from all the spoilers and influences and let them go out into the big bad old world alllllllllllll by them little selves...."

*shrugs* Oulangi is doing something different, or at least different enough that it stands out; and a lot of people are enjoying it... Isn't that a good thing?

I remember [info]ptyx mainly in the fandom as a total supporter of deconstruction--everyone can read the way that she wants to, the author's opinions don't matter, all opinions are valid, etc., to the point where she'd always withdraw from discussions when they stepped onto territory where she wouldn't go.

I admit I find this pretty ironic, given all of that.

This is all very silly. If writers are only interested in none or a very specific kind of feedback, then it's against their interests to participate in open-membership fandom communities, and post stories in places that allow for feedback from anyone. How dare they try and control how (potential) readers read their work? Why can't readers enjoy the stories the way they want to? Fandom can't be everything that we want, nor should it be. Thinking otherwise only leads to uneccessary disappointment and hurt feelings.

Makes you wonder how many do write for the sake of writing and their personal enjoyment, and those who write for attention.

Oulangi has found a way to get some attention in the crowded HP fandom. Good for her. For goodness sake, fandom isn't serious business, let people enjoy themselves!

"She's intelligent and witty, but she's just a reader."

I cannot stop boggling at that statement. "Just a reader," so her opinion is worthless because she isn't also a writer? Or because she isn't that specific writer?

By her logic, no one should ever rec anything to anyone else, because they'd be "affecting the experience" of the potential reader. *eyeroll*

Oh, HP fanbrats. Some of you are such fucking drama queens. Every time someone so much as suggests that Great Authors you ain't, you immediately cry "omg i'm going to stop ritin foreva!11" Plz. I've seen one "author" respond to a Britpick with "I'm sorry it ruined the story for you!" when the reviewer said nothing of the sort.

Ptyx claims she's never received real concrit, just people bitching about their pet peeves. I personally find that very surprising -- I receive real, usable concrit fairly often (and pet peeve whining rarely) and I've been in fandom for a lot less time than she has. o.O

Anti-recs are detrimental to the writer. The writer might not see it, but he/she's losing readers.
Onoz! But I thought this was just fandom and happy funball time? What's this about "losing readers", now? If you suck, you'll lose readers -- whether someone points your suckitude out or not. Hm, then again, I've seen BNFs write absolute rubbish and still get slobbered upon, so I guess she's got a point there. If nobody says anything bad, then it must be great! Therefore, we must stop people from saying anything ungood. Resistance is futile.

Ahem. >.>

I wondered how long until someone whined about [info]oulangi's reviews. I think what she's doing is awesome and I hope she starts a trend. Go [info]oulangi!

I couldn't see any reviews; have they been f-locked?

I've read some of Ptyx's fiction and would have been interested to see whether Oulangi's view coincided with mine - and what else she might have reviewed.

As a general rule, however, people who don't want their fiction criticised just shouldn't bloody share it. Leave it in the bottom drawer and nobody'll be OMG MEEN to it. Let it out in the world and it just has to take its chances - and so do you. Tough titty.

[info]magic_helmet's comment was the best:

[info]oulangi follows the Prophet and comments on every story that is showcased there. (Including mine - which she shredded. I must say, when I read it for the very first time, it did make me take my notebook and my pencils and pack them away in a closet with the vow to never ever attempt this writing thing again - but now I'm more like Meh to me, if I get one positive review, then it's worth it. SOMEONE out there likes it.)

I quickly scrolled through Oulangi's reviews and I couldn't see any "shredding?" Did I miss something?

But then I am just a wanka, what do I know?

Say it together, in the voice of Thumper the Rabbit:

"If you can't say something nice, don't say nuffink at all."

Alternatively, fic writers might consider adding this disclaimer:

"This is fanfic. Written for fun (my fun). If you have anything negative to say, piss off. If, on the other hand you feel like kissing my arse, go for it. Please do not make my fanfic writing into anything other than a happy place."

Right, because famous art and books don't ever have reviews posted all over the freaking place.

And not that it even matters, on occasion. Look at the reviews for "Dead Man's Chest" and look how it did in theaters. And well deserved it was, you ninja-biased pirate haters!

*cough* Did I say that out loud?
