Current mood:*sporfle!*

My fandom is full of gullible retards or how I learned to LULZ @ COSPLAY DORAMA.
Okay, so a few weeks ago, some male English speaking Japanese cosplayers named Aki [info]fxxer and Ayato [info]candydrug show up at [info]death_note. Their posts are here (candydrug) and here (fxxer). They both post cosplay pics and all is well, with many people squeeing over how cute they are and how good their cosplay is. All is well, right?

Apparently not. Five days after candydrug's post, someone named [info]sai_learn_lee posts that the cosplayers are actually frauds and have been stealing and reposting photos from the real Aki and Ayato, who are both female. Members who were duped start coming forward and whining that they just knew something was fishy but were too afraid to confront the fakers. Others decry the thieves and are convinced their attempts at name calling will shame them into forgiveness!

I'm just too busy laughing my ass off to take any of this seriously.

Update-o!: http://community.livejournal.com/death_note/716582.html

Fxxer reveals his real online identity and boo-hoos all over the place because he's not special enough to do his own cosplay and people called him inhumane. Time to call the WAAAAAHMBULANCE!

Funny but at the same time really really creepy.

Especially pretending to be guys when the original cosplayers are girls. Oh of course, because then everyone will fangirl them. *smacks forhead*

And now both Fxxer and Candydrug have had their journals deleted...interesting.

I don't know much about cosplay or Japanese fandom so I suspect I'm missing some cultural nuances here, but I don't quite understand why this is considered such a big deal. True, these guys and their fakes seem to have been all over the Internet and I can understand the Japanese girls being pissed about that - it's a sort of plagiarism, after all - but I'm obviously missing part of the picture. Is this kind of cosplay considered a high-status activity? Do the girls feel their reputations are being tarnished? Or are they concerned about some more straightforward form of identity theft?

This probably sounds pretty stupid to anyone more familiar with this area of fandom than myself, but it's a genuine enquiry; I'd really appreciate it if someone could fill in the gaps for me!

With the seires Death Note most of the characters dress in normal street clothes so any cosplayer with an accual resembilance to the character will automatically get +10 awesome points. Also just being asian and cosplaying seems to get you another +10 awesome points so they manage to be a big deal.

I think its mostly about the identity theft and how common it is (Western people stealing Asian fan art/photos/whatever)but its one of those knee jerk reaction things really.

Errr, that wasn't very eleqouent but i hope it helped ^^o

Well personally I'd be squicked if someone stole pictures of me and ran around claiming that they were me and that "I" was a very femmy male. But then that's just me.

I think getting credit for someone elses hard work is considered prety shitty no matter what you cultural background. also, some cosplayers DO take the hobby super seriously. and cosplayers are by nature desperate for attention (I'm a cosplayer and *I* certainly am), so if that attention gets diverted to someone who's cheated their way to it, they will understandably get a bit annoyed.

The cosplay imposters had serious attitudes, bitching at people for stealing their pictures, telling people they were inferior for liking anime, telling people they could translate from English to Japanese but just wouldn't, etc. etc. Just read the FAQ at fxxer's MySpace.

If I were either of those two Japanese cosplayers and someone was stealing my pictures, posing as me, changing my gender, and essentially ruining my reputation in an entirely different language that I could barely speak, I might be a little miffed too.

Am I the only one who looked at the pictures and had no doubt that they're girls? They're brilliant cosplayers, but it's pretty easy to see they're female.

I find it extremely bizarre that these two show up, scream their own praises, then get deleted when a journal only a day old decides to bust them on their lies.

the "authentic" post-imposture rage from the real A&A sounds...seriously made-up.

We happened to discover a tremendously hideous imposter creating and
running a website with pictures stolen from our sites and claiming that
they are his own.

The websites above are the hellishly nasty false websites.

the imposters running the fake websites claim that they are
male and that they are quarter Chinese, however, we are PURLY JAPANESE

The indecent webmasters of the fake websites are infringing these rights
and that is called CRIME.

it's gotta be premeditated, top-notch quality Engrish.

Now that I've looked at the galleries, I have to wonder how the hell people were suckered in the first place. At least two or three of the L shots are pretty fandom famous and it was established that the player was female when they first came out.
