Beyoncé Fans MAY Have Too Much Time On Their Hands
A disgruntled fan of Beyoncé has started a petition to get her to reshoot the video for her new song "Deja Vu" that has managed to get mainstream news coverage.

To: Columbia Records, A Division of Sony BMG

This petition is for the advocacy of having Ms. Beyoncé Knowles, Columbia Records, Music World Entertainment, and all other entities associated with the creative process of creating the long-form music video known as “Deja Vu” reshoot aforementioned video immediately.

This video is an underwhelming representation of the talent and quality of previous music video projects of Ms. Knowles. The following problems have been pointed out by numerous fans on and offline:

A) There is no clear story or theme to the video
B) The dancing is erratic, confusing and alarming at times
C) The sexual themes and shots between Ms. Knowles and Mr. Sean Carter PKA Jay-Z, are alarming and show unacceptable interactions between the two
D) The fashion in this video, while haute-couture, is unbelievable and ridiculous
E) The editing, while professionally done, causes one to get dizzy and disoriented
F) The overall feel of the video leaves a sense of much to be desired
G) The video is very disappointing and is not a clear representation of any of the songs themes

We, the fans of one Beyonce’ Knowles, ask that an alternative video be shot featuring; more choreographed & less spontaneous dancing, clearer visual themes that relate to the lyrics of the song, less gyrating, less scenes of non-existant sexual chemistry between Mr. Carter and Ms. Knowles, less zooming and quick cut edits and a more stylized and clear direction for all other aspects of the video production.

Suggested in this re-shoot would be the hire of another producer besides Ms. Sophie Mueller — one more acclimated to urban themes and imagery in music videos, other than Hype “Letterbox” Williams.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

The comments of the petition are a bit less eloquent, but quite a bit more brimming with the righteous indignation. I've cut and paste some of the more fun exerpts below.

People start out with concerns over Beyonce's mental health: "I thought I was the only one, who thought B had fell and bumped her head. "

Others find Jay-Z's inclusion in the video extraneous: "This video is the worst one yet! Who in the HE!! do JayZ thinks he is, standing there like it's his video...!!!"

Some fans express feelings of deep ambivalence: "The video wasn't THAT bad. I just got a little dizzy from everything that was going on, and I don't really appreciate that Jay-Z was just standing there rapping while she was dancing up on him like he was a stripping pole..."

Others engage in comparative analysis: "I think that if a video is done, you should be able to mute it and still know what is going on. Like when eminem does a video, it's like they play out each line, and it's fun to watch. They should play out each line..and show jay some dance moves or SOMETHING b/c it's not amusing for him to just stad there. Also, Bey is a baby, and I don't really want to look up to someone who's dancing up on a man who is this side of forty."

Won't someone think of the children? "J we know you and B are getting your swerve on and don't need to advertise to the younguns."

Some fans wonder if the video is some kind of terrible mistake: "Dear 'B'... are you sure this is the right edit of Deja Vu?"

There are conspiracy theorists: "HOW IS THIS VIDEO #1 ON TRL? I SMELL PAYOLA."

The Caps Lock of Displaced Rage also make an appearance: "JAY-Z HOW DID YOU OKAY THIS HOT MESS???"

And then there's my favorite: "I wish the sista would take a break, that's all I ask . run away, disapear, and let us wonder where the hell you are, and then come back. "

The petition, which has well over a thousand furious signatures at this point, can be found here, should you, too, feel the need to sign it.

They want her to reshoot a video of a song entitled Deja Vu.

God I love fandom.

Geez. It's true the video isn't very good. But they ought to do what I do; suck it up and change the channel.

Oh Beyonce, you could be so much hotter if you tried.

Oh god the grammar in that petition makes me cry. Don't they know that you are taken much more seriously if you use writing styles commonly accepted as "proper" in whichever language you are using? (okay, that was an odd sentence, but I know that this could turn into a mess of prescriptive/descriptive linguistics, and wanted to forestall that)

It's FEWER. Not less. FEWER. Has everyone forgotten the word exists? Such a pretty word, used for concrete items which can be counted... Not to mention the abuse of the semicolon, poor guy.

I'm not sure which is dumber:

  1. the assumption that a bad music video is somehow unusual and therefore detrimental to the artist in question
  2. the assumption that anyone, anywhere, ever, gives a rat's ass about internet petitions

As someone over the age of 14, I haven't seen it, but I like this demand to reshoot a music video... can I demand a reshoot of a movie? I demand that they reshoot all of the X-Men movies replacing Halle with any black actress with talent. And clearly it should be done, because I demand it and nothing can stop the power of an entitled fan with an inflated ego... well, except for everything.

BTW, the original petitioner (or someone claiming to be her) is crowing about it on Blackfolk here.

The grammar here is actually worse. And it's one of the things that drive me nuts about Blackfolk: The sheer number of members who insist in typing in the venacular - un-ironically</a> typing in the venacular. The abundance of "y'alls" and "f'real thoughs" coupled with normal 'net casual grammar makes half the comm's members look like they graduated from Dexter Manley* High School.

See, the problem with online petitions is you can't get ahold of the extremely stupid ones and use them for fuel before they get into the big wide world.

If you had to explain to people why this petition shouldn't be burnt before you got people to sign it, there'd be a darn sight less stupid petitions out there. I think.

Of course - it's 3 in the morning - I may not be thinking clearly...

If they were attempting to make an otherwise attractive woman look really, really ridiculous, they succeeded.

The part where she's kicking up sand in that green number reminds me of those lizards with the frills around their necks that run bowlegged through the desert. Except the frill is around her waist.

I think she's trying to imitate Josephine Baker while she's doing the dance in the sand. On that note, she should have been dressed in a banana skirt. Then Jay-Z could have plucked one and ate it, while looking oh so cool and suave cause looking bored is the new cool.

Other times she looks like she's imitating Shakira and Tina Turner. Beyonce don't you have any style of your own? Or just those ugly clothes?

Also, I just watched that video for the first time and can't. Stop. Laughing. Does the rest of the world think she looks like as much of an idiot as I do, or is there some new and horrible version of "cool" that involves spastic twirling and sparkles of which I have simply not become aware?
