Liking dubs makes you xenophobic!
Over on the Atlus USA message boards, a user by the name of "Dilandau01" makes a post asking if the US version of Persona 3 will have the Japanese voices intact. First few replies are the video game standard of "it'd be nice, but it'd take up a lot of room, so...probably not," and "as long as the voices we do get are good, who cares"

P3 without the original japanese VA sounds like a complete joke to me after comleting the japanese version of this masterpiece.

@VyersLives
You can't be really serious to try to compare the english dub of DDS with a superior VA of P3 ? It's nor even 1/4 that much VA compared to P3.

ATLUS should really do what is best for the fans of this series and tho original VA ist the best we can get. A dub is just some kind of cheap option for people who are too lazy to read subtitles.

But because we all know how ATLUS handle things we'll have no other choice but to buy the japanese version of this masterpiece.

Why not release the standard version and a special edition with japanese VA. You'd be surprised how much people will buy it.

And then it explodes. We have picspam, we have Atlus employees wanking right in there with the best of them, we have claims that Japan, Crispin Freeman, and StillCrazy all suck the big one...and then. On page 2, angryeuropean (and boy is he!) shows up, claiming that the reason he is angry is because Americans argue over the Japanese language in video games.

He states:

That pisses me off to see Americans bitching about Japanese dialogue, here in Europe most RPG's are released with the American dub, and sometimes ONLY WITH ENGLISH TEXT!!! So apart from English people, the rest of Europe is screwed!!! How is that fair???!!! Yet you %*!%**! complain because you don't want to listen to a foreign language while you ALWAYS have your games text translated???!!!

and

Since when have most Americans been avid watchers of foreign movies?!!? Wow, you learn something new everyday!!Only 3 percent of movies released in the US are foreign!! Same for books!
Also there are countries where quite a lot of people PREFER subtitled versions, in Portugal, Northern Europe countries, Japan etc. Just because the sounds of foreign languages are grating to your ears doesn't mean that less closed minded people are elitists!!! The people who hate original versions are just lazy (and xenophobes sometimes)!!!! In the countries where they don't dub, people are used to it and don't hate it!!!

I'm still trying to figure out what the exclamation mark ever did to him.

It's small, but very wanky. And only promises to grow. Much like Atlus' fandom in general.

Edit: Mustang taisa shows up to say

"For me, translation is just as bad as cesoring. I can't bear someone judging what I can or cannot see or someone interpreting stuff for me. It makes me feel like an idiot.
In my view, games, just like animes, are art. If you're interested in foreign art you should learn about it, and learn to understand it.
If you need someone or something to tell you what's going on, then you shouldn't be watching/playing this in the frist place. Learn to think by yourself frist.

I can undertand the opposite point of view, and maybe I'm too hardcore for the general public, so that's why i think there should be an alternative audio option. If the game takes a full DVD5, use a DVD9."

She's totally too punk rock for The Real World English.

I have no clue this fandom is (and don't really care), but there's nothing quite like the smell of hypersensitive whinging in the morning.

Because really, in a visual medium like film or an action medium like a video game, xenophobia is the only possible reason for liking to, you know, pay attention to the visuals instead of reading subtitles.

As to the games that are released only in English with English subs? >strike>Well... sounds like that's what the market will absorb.</strike> Oops, silly me. I forgot, it's all about the evil Anglophone conspiracy. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the expense of hiring dozens of different translators in order to sell to smaller markets, and clearly, even if as many people spoke Portuguese as English, they would still refuse to provide Portuguese subs, because that's not what interests the cabal.

I always forget that.

I fail to see how this is America's fault? Someone enlighten me please.

(My world had gone topsy-turvy!) On the other hand, I also used to go to a video store that had two of most the X-Files tapes -- one with subtitles, one dubbed in Japanese.

You know, having the option of Japanese or English VA would be nice. For example, I really enjoyed playing the .hack series with the Japanese voices, because I found the English dubbing annoying.

But it's not a necessity. It's just a perk, you know? It's something I'd enjoy having the choice of, but having only an English dub isn't a dealbreaker for me. English dubs are fine, no need to throw a tantrum over not having the Japanese VA.

And I don't know why everyone hates Tidus' voice so much, it sounded like every other male English dub that not the Great God Crispin Freeman (hee), when YUNA'S voice was clearly the worst. I swear, she sounded like her brain was deprived of oxygen at birth. "*breathiness* I... ummmmmmm......... okay!!"

In my view, games, just like animes, are art. If you're interested in foreign art you should learn about it, and learn to understand it.

Now, I'm thinking this should mean that he knows Japanese fluently, can import Japanese games for his imported gaming system, and doesn't need to care what the English-speaking public gets.

Yet somehow I'm getting the feeling that's not what he means at all.

For most games, I think it doesn't really matter what language it's in because you're always going to associate it with the language you first hear anyway. (I still cannot get over Wakka sounding like Zoro when I heard the FFX character songs because I played it in English first.)

BUT. In cases where you already have something to go off of, like, say, the Fullmetal Alchemist games, it drives me nuts that there's no Japanese option because I watch my anime subbed and dammit, Ed should not sound that old!

Yay, anon commenting is finally back! <3

Anyway,
"For me, translation is just as bad as cesoring. I can't bear someone judging what I can or cannot see or someone interpreting stuff for me. It makes me feel like an idiot."

So I take it he's fluent in Japanese or has a unique ability to understand a language he doesn't actually speak. Or maybe he just hasn't realized that subtitling IS translating (and actually more gets lost in translation than in case of dubs - though, going by American dubs of anime, maybe not so much).

"I can undertand the opposite point of view, and maybe I'm too hardcore for the general public,"

Rock on! *shows devil's horns*

Btw, does anyone have a copy of the Powerpuff Girls episode 'Bubblevicious'? I really need a wav of Bubbles going "You're so hardcore!" and "I'm hardcore now!"

It's small, but very wanky. And only promises to grow. Much like Atlus' fandom in general.

Oh, you summed up the fandom perfectly. ♥

Buuut maybe the reason PAL gamers feel hard done by is that most of the localisation money and effort goes to the US market because it's got waaay more consumers and therefore more potential for ze rolling in cash in it.

This means we often get our RPGs over a year late, dubbed in English Americans may find natural but non-Americans equate to a Saturday morning cartoon, with a black and white manual in up to five languages. Occasionally we have our option to switch to an original audio track entirely removed to make room for extra languages. To top it all off, we pay up to twice as much for a game as the US market does. People like angryeuropean have probably had all of this bottled up for a while! XD

I HATE reading subtitles. I just can't watch the pretty and try to read at the same time. I also prefer dubs because I can get a better grip on emotion and voice when the person is speaking English.

Clearly, this either makes me incredibly xenophobic, or the worst anime fan ever. Or both.
