"Gay": Nothing derails a thread faster!
Over on RPG.net, someone makes an unassuming post about recent gamer-bashing on TV:

I was watching Dateline a few nights ago. It was a story about a girl manipulating a couple of guys into killing her mother. It was complicated...but the thing that grabbed me was that they had to mention, with dramatic pause, that the two guys who killed the woman got together to play Dungeons & Dragons.

It had absolutely nothing to do with the story at all...but the way they mentioned it made it seem like it was a dramatic factor in the story.

Just funny that after two decades, the press still likes to poke at D&D and try to get a rise from ignorant viewers. I thought we were past that.

In other news, I saw half an episode of queer eye for the straight guy. The Guy was a medieval re-enactor, and obviously a gamer. The "guys" were really ripping on his hobbies like they were immature (they kept mentioning his age, and the fact that he still did these things). The guy was fairly intelligent and expressed his interest and love for the hobbies very well, and the "guys" just seemed ignorant, silly, and dumb as they tried to make jokes about it. That isn't from a slanted point of view either. I just wonder how many people viewing were laughing along with the dumb jokes?

Gamer tells other gamers, "Hey, gamers are mocked in the media!" Preaching, choir, etc. Not much wank-potential here. Until we remember that any mention of homosexuality in a forum not intended for such discussion will lead to gay!wank of hilarious proportions -- proportions, in fact, that are, more often than not, inverse to the relevance of the initial mention of homosexuality.

And really, what better place for gay!wank than a messageboard predominately visited by men without girlfriends?*

The fun starts in the second reply: "I love it that it's okay for them to make fun of 'nerds,' but as soon as anyone says anything mildly humorous about them being gay, that person is automatically branded a 'bigot.' I say screw the double standard. If you dish it out, don't whine when you get hit with it, too. And that's all I have to say about that."

The rest of the wankers, however, have a lot more to say. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

SteamPulp, who has "nothing against gay people" and has "a large number" of gay friends, wonders why we can't all just get along: "I feel that yes it is about time that we stop looking down at people for what ever choices they make in thier life. being Gay, or a Nerd, or a Scientologist is a choice and a right, to rip people apart because they do things different, or have different views is wrong. We should also not have to shove these beliefs down other people throats as well. I was watching this reality show on Bravo about this woman who has a studio where she does weight training/exercise/whatever. Does her (gay) relationship really have to be paraded around? Are they going for Shock Value? Persoanlly this is why I do not watch much TV these days. I find nothing redeeming, and most of it beside a few good shows are a waste of an hour of my life."

Gay!wank on RPG.net, however, is totally redeeming and worth many hours of everyone's life (including this wanka's).

We learn grubman's daughters' thoughts on yaoi: "I tend to agree with Steampulp. I know my daughter (17) and all her friends are into the whole gay guy thing. There are tons of sites on the web, and they all have pictures of gay guys kissing and stuff up on their walls. Not to mention the whole border line Emo thing. Disclaimer: Not Homophobic or anything, I could care less, and have one very good friend that is gay."

Come on, guys, read the F_W wiki!

LeftWingPenguin is the first to drop the "o" word: "It's pretty much an example of the principle that just being a member of an oppressed minority doesn't make one automatically not a bigot ... Note that I'm not saying that gamers are in any way 'oppressed' in the ways homosexual or black people have been (and are), but we're talking about casual, rather than systematic, bigotry here. In our society, there are certain groups of people who are implicitly regarded as 'fair game' for mockery, condescention and ridicule based on their" obsession with brightly-colored polyhedral dice and tendency to proclaim themselves Galstaff Sorcerer of Light "presumed difference from the hypothetical norm."

LucitasBastardChilde angles for a Nobel Peace Prize by calling for victimized minorities of the world to UNITE!: "Frankly, big buncha 'freaks' we are, queers AND gamers, we should get together with all the other oppressed groups and figure out a way to fight against a system, society, and a machine, that would love to grind us all into dust." YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT YOUR HIT-POINTS!

And then we get a long and delightfully pompous digression about whether or not homosexuality is "a choice," and whether the word "discrimination" is applicable to "anti-roleplaying rhetoric." My favorite part is where one of the chief wankers posts, "Dear thread, Please stop being about gay people," and then wanks on, unabated.

A final word of wisdom from the Very Fucking Intelligent riprock: "The number of humans who practice or have practiced same-sex genital contact is probably much, much higher than the number of" gamers who have ever had genital contact with another person "humans who have ever played RPGames."

*I can say this, because I totally have friends who are gamers. Also, I am on my period right now, have several personality disorders, and am just a bitch in general.

ETA: Awwww, it's so CUTE when wankers are confused! Maybe we should add a "So You've Been Wanked" section to the userinfo to clarify things ...

I just love the people who are all "I don't hate gays or anything, I just want them to be gay somewhere I can't see it, like maybe a nice closet." Makes me want to pat their little cheeks, to put them off guard for when I smack 'em.

LOL, I am a Girl Gamer (yes one of the rare breed), and I have to say, yep, predominantly men, many of whom don't date. By the way, girls, you wanna husband, it's a great way to meet intelligent, creative men -- much better than a bar. Not that I got into gaming for a husband, but I know several people who have.

Honest to God, expecting the Fab Five to have anything but contempt for gamer gear? Those guys are so trendy that they hurt... of course they're not going to put up with someone in an outfit that's just so half-a-millenium ago. If you watch that show, you have to know to expect that. It's not because they're gay; it's because they're fashion plates. (Though the gay factor does make me snicker when they start in about what women want. Dudes... I think I'm better qualified, and I'll take the gamer, thanks. They usually have swords and an imagination.)

And honestly, won't someone think of the gay gamers? They think of you, and do a charisma roll...

There's so much angry that could be stated here, but I just can't be angry with it anymore. When I see lovely statements like:
"...reveals the media for the pack of lazy, no-originality-having hacks that they all really are. When they're not re-writing press releases, they are trying to remember the last thing people got worked up over and see if they can use that to scare people into reading their paper or watching their program or whatever." I just can't bring myself to get angry anymore.

Do people not bother to wonder why things changed? Do they never stop and try to find out, to attempt to understand and learn? If you don't like it, then do something besides tune your brain out. I'm cynical as they come, but seriously,If you can't bother to freaking educate yourself on a situation, then it's time for the Mark Twain principle.

I...yeah. I'm gonna go to my corner now and clean up.

I'm trying very hard to make a joke about cross-class skills, but I've got nothing. Something along the lines of, "Guys? I know it takes two skill points for barbarians to go up one rank in sense motive, but could you please invest it so you can get the point?" but that's far too wordy. (Plus barbarians have to spend two skill points to read, anyway.)

Having children is an option for many gays who are socially connected enough to breed, whereas many gamers, for whatever reason, don't have enough sex to produce offspring.

As a living, breathing dyke and a hardcore gamer who will be attending GenCon in a couple of days, the only thing preventing me from going in there and busting some heads is the general moral prohibition about involvement in wank that gets posted on F_W.

They're just jealous because, according to my anecdotal evidence, gay gamers get way more tail.

This passage can be turned to serve either side of the discussion. The pro-gay side can point to Athenian castigation of homosexuality as evidence of centuries of oppression; the anti-gay side can point to the same castigation as evidence that (a) homosexuality is a choice and (b) the homosexual lobby tends to distort history.

Wait, castigation of gays can be used to prove that homosexuality is a choice? Did Pat Robertson make me choose to be lesbian? Something isn't right here, and I'm pretty sure it's riprock.

I recently got outed in the community for an online game I've played for years. After the wave of people messaging me to ask if it was true, everything went more or less back to normal. The guys who would joke around about me being a 'noob' now joked around about me being a gay, and the guys who would genuinely insult me switched their usual racist insults especially for me.

On the whole, it's an improvement. The only embarassing part was how I got outed, which was being so astonished to find another member of the community cute from a picture he posted that I accidentally blurted it out in chat. I get teased a lot for that. ;)

In fairness, RPG.net is generally a gay-friendly forum. Casual use of "gay" for "bad" (to say nothing of the uglier synonyms) will get you banned pretty quickly, and openly anti-gay posters get dogpiled regularly. It's openly against the rules to make "group attacks" as well, so that helps. (It's one of the more heavily moderated fora I've been on.)

I love how he keeps putting "guys" in quotes, as if the fact that they're gay makes them no longer men but sort of pseudo-men, and thus they are no longer guys but "guys". Fabulous.

And I seem to remember there being an episode of Queer Eye once where the make-better was a gay guy, and they made fun of him just as much as they do anyone else. What makes them think gamers get harsher treatment during the "Hey, let's trash their house! Fun!" stage than anyone else does?

"So You've Been Wanked"...

After being wanked, many wankers go through what are known as the five stages of acceptance, classified as followed:

WTF! - In this stage, the wanker has no idea what wanking is. Well, okay, they know what it usually is, but they have no idea what this community is doing here, or why anyone would think they were doing THAT when they were just discussing their favorite book/game/anime/celebrity's boobs/etc.

OMG! - Not long after, the wanker usually realizes that they're being mocked. Perhaps they post again, stating their disbelief. How dare they! How DARE they! This leads to stage 3...

STFU! - In which the wanker begins to post furious flames in f_w, proclaiming that they are interrogating the wank from the wrong perspective and so on and tl;dr. And also f_w regulars are all middle-aged women who get hot and bothered reading about underage anime characters and stuff, so we have no right to talk. Everyone knows that.

BBQ! - When the regulars at f_w prove to be remarkably resilient to flaming, the wanker can only resort to one thing: Back Button, Quick!

LOL! - Years down the road, some wankers may realize that honestly, they were being pretty wanky. And yeah, okay, it was pretty funny, and they'll think a little harder about what they're publically posting. Sadly, few wankers ever reach this state of enlightenment, but it's something to strive for.
