Christ on a Cracker...
...a really nice cracker. With perhaps some herbed chèvre or a little olive tapenade. With a crisp Pinot Grigio on the side.

Ahem.

When religion meets cooking, the result is wank. A small wank, mind you; it's more in the manner of tasty snack than a full meal. OK, I'll stop with the foodisms.

Seems that Alton Brown, beloved by both foodies and geeks for his show Good Eats, wrote a column for the Christian magazine Guideposts.

So far so good; the article is about how he sees the path to his success as a spiritual journey and there's a lot in there about hospitality and coincidence. His only mention of Christ and Christianity is when he talks about food and the Last Supper.

So, where's the wank?

Over on the LJ comm good_eats where lordfeldo complains that "someone got Jesus in my Alton Brown" and goes on to say "What happened to being a god of dorks? of scientists? WHAT HAPPENED!?"

Apparently the post was a lot more anti-Christian in its first incarnation--it's been edited twice now--but there's still some nice wank in the comments, where people claim you can't be scientific and religious or even spiritual at the same time and other people don't see the big deal.

Me? I'm just thinking about how a conversation between Alton and Jesus would go. I'd get cable for that show.

Jesus: What did you put in this sauce? It's divine, and that's not a word I use lightly.

Alton: It's all in the reduction technique.

Alton: Jesus, could you get me a cup of wine? I need to deglaze this pan.

Jesus: Sure! *turns on the tap*

"Waah, someone I admire has a philosophy/theology I don't agree with! What about my needs?!?"

Give me a break. If you find out someone you admire holds beliefs that you thought they were "too smart" to hold, you have two choices: either you can believe the person is dumber than you estimated, or that perhaps the beliefs have more merit than you gave them credit for. Either way, you were wrong somewhere along the line. Get over it, and join the human race.

Why can't I get the Jesus/AB porn out of my head now?

Alternatively, that cow from Everyday Italian. Let me just finish up this super easy bowl of fresh-made gnocci with a fine parmesan pesto before I zip off to the country club!

It's thanks to asses like this that the myth that religion and science are mutually exclusive perpetuates.

That was worded strangely. I've had beer.

"When religion meets cooking," + "the article is about how he sees the path to his success as a spiritual journey and there's a lot in there about hospitality and coincidence."

*Is suddenly wary, eyes his mental file on Alton Brown worriedly*

"His only mention of Christ and Christianity is when he talks about food and the Last Supper."

*Relaxes slightly*
Oh, that's not bad. As long as he's not a preachy Christian...

*Reads column*
People are actually upest by this? Idiots.

*Continues loving Alton Brown*

*facepalm*

I love the 'science and religion can't work together' vibe I get from the OP. It'd probably make his head spin if I said I'm both Christian and the female version of Fox Mulder. (The truth is out there! *shifty eyes*)

Reminds me of this shoirt story I read once.

Christain Scienstist on a Star ship full of atheists. He believes that science offers a chance to understand God. Okay, all well and good. He does get mocked by the athiests a bit.

The ship finds a planet with the ruins of civilization on it, totally wrecked by its star going nova. Our hero does some calculations and concludess that this is the Star of Bethlehem, the glowing point of light which guided the Three Wise Men to Jesus. God took out an entire civilization just to bring the Three Wise Men to Jesus.

Angst.

I think it's more than a little incongruous with his science background to believe in fate/predetermination and then to relate so strongly to Jesus.

God does not play dice with the universe, anyone?

"Oh no! Some scientists are religious! This cannot be!"

Bitch, please. Talk to my secondary school Physics teacher and see how science and religion can be combined!

Beyond the obvious joke of "This is my body...this is my blood...and they're good eats!"...

By Cheyenne Wright.

BTW, Alton did see this, and liked it so much he had Wright do some illos for his t-shirt line.

Whenever a celebrity I otherwise respect holds a point of view I find baffling or stupid, I prefer to just sulk a bit about it to my boyfriend, and then get on with my life.

Unless it's Scientology.

He didn't mention "golden brown and delicious" or "I hate monotaskers". Nuts.

Otherwise, the article's awesome.
Christ on a Cracker...

...a really nice cracker. With perhaps some herbed chèvre or a little olive tapenade. With a crisp Pinot Grigio on the side.
Wrong reference. You wanted "...a kosher salted cracker".

Meh, who cares. So what if he's Christian? Athiesm is not the speshul sparkly perfect belief system of choice. There are plenty of many incredibly retarded fuckwits who are Athiests, just like any other religion, and many of them can take it way beyond the line of cool. Just stop baiting the Christians already, k thx, there are enough pedophiles on the internet if you want someone to toy with.

AB is not one of those crazy preachy Born Again Christians (of which I need to count some relatives I rarely interact with) so I don't see what the big deal is. The article is pretty secular, considering it's in a Christian magazine, so we really can't say how far his beliefs go anyway. The story is about inspiring others to try for their dreams, not about how going to church 5x a week and spending the rest of your time denouncing other people and plotting against abortion doctors will make you a food tv star.

So what if he is a Christian? He's considerate and polite enough to keep his religion private, which I think everyone should do, as religion is a personal thing. It's the pushing of religion in other people's faces that annoys me, not the religion itself, and yes, I am speaking to you too, annoying teenage wannabe pagans who buy black candles and are all LOLLERSKATES!@@@@!! I AM A WITCH LOL I AM SO COOL AND EDGY AND DARK LULZ ROFLCOPTOR!!11

Believing in a God/Gods doesn't automatically deprive you of your sense, wisdom, skepticism, scientific knowledge, rational mind or anything else. You don't have to check in your scientist card when walking into a church/temple/mosque/grove of trees chosen by your coven. Similarly, you shouldn't automatically fault a person for believing in something when they are obviously not a fucking moron, an annoying fuckwit or a crazy terrorist. If you have nothing better to do, why don't you go play with some pedophiles or become a Harmonian troll? It would be a better use of your time.

Come on, people, if we're going to play religion makes your brains mush brain, why is it Alton Brown and not Tom "Those evil antidepressants can't hurt me anymore because I paid God to make me speshul" Cruise?

Or, ya'know, laugh at some stories about crazy overly religious people you know. So here is mine: I knew a rather religious young man very vaguely. He gave up masturbation for Lent, and the saddest part was that he was so earnest and honest about how masturbation was a dirty dirty sin. Or maybe that was the best part. 8D

Second thought: I am thinking that the heretical Church of Alton Brown will never get on its feet now :( And I was so looking forward to the Holy Blessing of the Kosher Salt and the Baptisms with brine and the Sunday sermons denouncing stuffing your poultry! *sigh*

spiritual=/=christian. hello people.

It may or may not, who can say. It means you know... spritual.

So he wrote for guideposts. That's like Unitarian in it's only vaguely religious overtones. (My mother reads it)

Alton's cool.

Man, my problem with Alton Brown is much more the format in which he delivers good eats. I don't need skits and wack-tastic humor with *poing* noises to enliven cooking advice/chemical explanations, kthx. If I can grit my teeth and make it through the bouncy-you're-all-in-preschool-so-I-have-to-flail-to-keep-your-attention!! approach, I like his recipes and what he has to say.
