Over on [info]fanficrants (yes, again), [info]allira_dream complains: Fanfics are not canon. They will not be canon. No matter what happens Fanfics. Are. Not. Canon.

[info]iggy04 begs to differ.

I don't think canon means what iggy04 thinks it means.

Meh, not really that wanktastic so far. Seems there's some misapprehension over definitions, the rant was far from necessary, and Iggy needs to read more carefully, but that's kinda par for the course. It's more in the realm of "disagreement" than "wankery."

More like those shudders you get out of the blue that feel funny. (Am I alone in getting those? Mainly when people play with the hair at the back of my neck?)

I finally stopped watching ffrants about a while back, and I can't tell if it warms me or saddens me that iggy04 is still marching determinedly on in his/her largely harmless yet spectacularly clueless way.

But they are canon. Lots of canons, in fact . . .

This was sane until iggy's post- and then allira made the mistake of replying...but I agree, it's not really wanky yet. Has high potential wank, though- especially if CC's *cough*psycho*cough* fans show up!

LOL- just headdesking along with almira_dream here....

My version of this is "All fan fiction is an alternative universe". It doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to stick with the rules of the original, but then again once you have accepted that it is an alternative universe and will never be anything but, you are free to play around with the details at will. If only people could get that into their heads, we might have fewer canon/not canon arguments because as the OP says NONE OF IT IS BLOODY CANON.

Until you get published, but then it's not fanfic, it's, uhm... fan-written fictional novels.

Irrelevant, but I couldn't resist.

Honestly, I'm not sure what either person is saying. When a reader says, "That's so canon!" s/he pretty much means, "Wow! That's a Snape that's doing something Snape would actually do!" As to such and such a ship being canon... well, that usually means that such and such a ship is canon--R/T is canon, R/S is not canon. Saying a fic is "so canon!" about an R/T fic means that it reflects the ship as presented in canon, rather than having Tonks be an E3IL WENCH and Remus only dating her because she can shapeshift into Sirius, his true love.

On the other hand, it's clear from the original post that the OP seems to believe that saying a fic is "so canon" means we actually think that the canon writer is going to include it, so iggy's responses to it are odd. Though honestly, as a canon-compliant writer, the OP bothers me a a whole lot more, because I can't believe that people actually think that's what "so canon" means when it's made as a comment on a fic.

I agree with the OP.

Sure, a fic may have canon pairings and deal with canon characters/ events, but THE FIC IS NOT CANON because the original author DID NOT write it. No matter how much we wish for it to be.
