Fuzzy wank
Get Fuzzy, a popular comic strip with a very popular syndication feed on livejournal.

Who would have guessed that it would require a dose of Harry Potter fandom to take it to such a wankalicious level?

Oh, Potterfandom, why must you blight all that you touch?

Or spooge it, one of the two.

Er, I THINK what I meant by that last comment was "Wank it 'til it spooges" or something equally...yeah.

I...I'm gonna get back to writing my paper...

I'm starting to think that LJ should have two sites: Rabid Potter Fanatics and Everybody Else.

But then I'd miss all the wank, and that would be very sad.

Sorry but I'm with the Potterfandom here. I mean when you take such great pains to sound like a condesending ass then don't be surprised when folks take offense.

dmaster needs to have someone pull that stick outta his ass and smack him with it.

Yeah both sides were bringing the wank but even I have to admit that one dude's holier-than-thou, you must be an idiot to like this book tone just set my teeth on edge.

What this has to do with Get Fuzzy I haven't the faintest.

What cracks me up about this:

Someone: Harry Potter is a kids' book.
Potterfans: IS NOT IS NOT IS NOT! It has dark stuff and adult issues! It is a Very Weighty Tome! Don't you dare say it's a kids' book!
Someone: But, um, it's marketed to kids.
Potterfans: That does not make it a kids' book!
Someone: Then why is it stocked in the kids' section in bookstores?
Potterfans: Because of the PR Devils! It is not a kids' book and I am in no way reading and enjoying a kids' book because that would be a really really bad thing! Not that there's anything wrong with kids' books! But this isn't one!
Someone: As far as I can see there is no evidence that this book is targeted to an adult audience, and a great deal of evidence that it's targeted to kids. If there's a definition of "kids' book" that does not mean "targeted to an under-18 audience," I don't know what it is.
Potterfans: LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

Dude, Jesus, it's a kids' book. I still read The Secret Garden. Why is it so awful to imply that the HP series might not be primarily aimed at 35-year-old women?

Because most folks don't like being talked to like they're a mentally deficient five year old. And it'd be nice if the guy would just admit he was condescending instead of continuously backtracking and then blaming the posters for 'misunderstanding' him.

Well, but those are different issues. The guy's initial remark might have been condescending, though god knows we've seen worse in the hallowed halls of wankery, but it doesn't follow that the way to respond to that is to insist that HP isn't a kids' book at all. It seems more logical to me to target the attitude toward readers of children's books than to target the assertion that the book is aimed at kids.

YES. I love TSG....of course, now I find myself aging Colin and Dickon a few years and slashing them in my mind, but that's beside the point.

At least it's not that "magical aging" I've heard about those evil HP ficcers doing. Because, you know, That's Not Right (TM).

Now I'm suddenly reminded of the scary-as-all-hell breed of Sailor Moon fans who, ten years after the series' inception, still go on and on about how it is the epitome of Animated Philosophical Literary Goodness.

I'll be honest: I'm a guy in my twenties and I think Sailor Moon is a fun show. Stiil, I recognize that, in Japan, the show was marketed to young girls, and done up accordingly. It takes a special breed of Western!Wankatude to come up with massively flawed mumbo-jumbo about how Usagi is this quintessential Christ-like figure or some shit like that. And it's kind of scary how people can take Magical Girl Anime and turn it into this gigantic metaphor for just about any aspect of life.

That being the case, I wonder what Nietzche would have to say about the Doom Tree or the Imperium Silver Crystal...

Heh. Personally, I've described Sailor Moon as the Lovecraft cycle, only with cute girls in fuku instead of tentacle beasts. That's as literary as I've ever gotten.

Dude, if you REALLY want wrong, messed up, and they-gave-THIS-to-kids? During-the-VICTORIAN-era?

Find the original, unexpurged Peter Pan.

You're probably going to have to hit old and odd used book stores in England to find it, but it's WORTH it.

Two little hints...the Indians were called "Pickaninnies" and we find out where Captain Hook came from. And he's MUCH more evil.

I will say no more.

My favorite part was the dose of sanity.

"Who cares if he doesn't like them or not?"

How so bloody true. I've skimmed a few of the books. The concepts, the plots, the stuff I've seen...it just doesn't do a thing for my interest. I don't care. I agree with the poster who said they're inflicted with Too Much Hype.

At this rate, the HP Fandom's going to have hairy palms and go blind before the sixth book comes out.

If you've given them a look and THEN decided, "Not for me", that's one thing. What I find wanky (and yes, I used to be this way too) are the ones who think that avoiding things that are popular, simply because they're popular, makes them kewl and soo-peer-eeyore.

I mean, after all, air, water and food are pretty damn popular and you don't see anyone pissing and moaning about that. ;)

As far as hype goes, with the books, the popularity came first, then the hype, if I recall correctly. To me, at least, it's a little more palatable than the hype coming first and leading to popularity.

Amen.

I mean if you don't care for the books fine. Just don't get all high and mighty with those that DO like them.

Hell I think Tolkien's duller than dirt but I don't go around doing the 'I'm better than yo-ou' dance because of it.
