Mediaminer wank or how not reviewing protects the reader
(Note: Much of this was originally visible and has been moved to a locked forum, but anyone can join. I'm copying some of it here, but will post screen caps of the comments later.)

It starts out as a fairly decent, civil, and otherwise unusual conversation on the Mediaminer.org forums regarding an essay on reviews written by Lady Macbeth. Psychlone enters the fray and disagrees with the MM.org policy which allows authors to "Not accept unsolicited critiques" and tells everyone who doesn't want to get anything other than praise to "grow the *beep* up." Sueric, famed for not accepting "unsolicited critiques" takes offense and tells Psychlone that they aren't seeing the whole picture, obviously the reason to not accept "unsolicited critiques" is because it protects the critics. This "brave act of self sacrifice" is echoed by other posters.

Angelica Pierce responds, advising that she disagrees and that not letting people respond to public writing is not allowing them to express their opinions publicly. Others agree. DQBunny steps in and calls Sueric out on her deleting reviews, which prompts Sueric to move the thread from the main page link to "Arguments." Later they moved several other people who disagreed to "Arguments" as well, thus making the whole page seem out of order, and a little random.

Psychlone, living up to their name, turns their opinon around and agrees with Sueric that it's private space and some people are sensitive. Things go back and forth, my personal favorite part is Sueric reminding us that there is one concrit review that she has not removed.

This was where it seemed to stop, as the conversation was fairly polite (including a call from Psychlone for everyone to get along). Other mods (SilverArmada) and (WolfintheNight) civiliy weigh in on the topic, but it is Lord Aaron who decides to change the thread from a review debate to making it all about the persecution of Sueric by the other members. Other members who clearly don't know what the topic of their own thread is.

You are all so off topic it's making me sick.

Clearly.

No, do you think published writers like Anne Rice or Laurell K. Hamilton will change how they write if one person sends them a letter saying 'i think the latest book you wrote was...' Really, MANY people send their favourite authors complaints and suggestions just to make themselves feel better. The author could give a rats ass.

Somehow, I remember something a little different about those two and if they care about their readers opinions.

And what the hell is this? Are you daft? What part of "Sue does not want concrit, so bugger off already" do you not understand. She does not care if one person out of 100 does not like her work, it is not possible to get everyone to like everything an author writes.

She has reviews removed to prevent flame wars, if their contents has concrit... she never asked for it in the first place.

Inusaga takes offense, and does her goodbye cruel world mediaminer post, citing greener forums as her reason.

Quoth Aaron the Mod: Goodbye, Fool

Very nice way to talk to any of your members, but given past history of MMO forums, not a surprise. He also drags Del Kaiden (another IY BNF) through the mud.

Yes, this Del is an IYFG mod among other things (behold the power of google) but also seems to one of Sueric's peers in writing IY fiction. Here is betting he just doesn't like Sue because more people like her work.

Lady Lark closes the thread and threatens possible actions against those involved for going offtopic. In the arguments forum.

I also do not want to see this spreading to certain journal fen communities or livejournals (And Yes I am watching). Again, it is in violation of rule #4 and I will be enforcing it this time - to everyone. I don't bloody care if you are a mod on this site or not. --Lady Lark

As I am only a member for entertainment viewing purposes, I'm going to be just a little amused if I'm banned for this.

Edit: Either deleted or the mods have locked the thread so only they can see it. Screencaps will go up when I get home

Now that I'm done snarking our dear Lady Lark and suggesting that a sparkly-shiny MC Hammer "Can't Wank This" icon be made special just for her (::waves:: Howdy there, Lady Lark! :D Glad you could join us!)

I have a mediaminer account I don't believe I've touched in ages and haven't ever used to my recollection.

Whatever shall I do about it?

OOoOOoOoOooo! ::waves hand:: BAN ME! PLEASE BAN ME! Save me the trouble if I should ever be arsed eventually to remember my password so I can delete the useless thing. The site's worse than FF.net, and that's saying a lot. :D

I mean, shit, concrit = how you grow as a writer. Period. True, some people wouldn't know what concrit is if it bit them on the ass, writer and reviewer both, but nobody's a brave, misunderstood soul here for protecting fwagile widdle egos of pweshus, speshul writers and sparklywanky BNFs like Sueric.

I have a bit of a request to make: I told my friend about how common the wank is with Sueric and she'd like to know more, but I'm kind of supposed to be working and the wiki doesn't have any report links. Can someone be so kind as to provide links? Please?

Awww I'm a BNF? WOW! I can't imagine that since I've basically stopped writing Fanfiction, but that's ok if LA and everyone here still wants to think that. Hell, been listed here a couple of times. Oh, and thanks for the ego slap down... guess I needed it at the time. I would like to point out one or two errors with LA's post... I'm not male, unless I had surgery that I'm unaware of and can find no evidence of - hubby checked quite carefully last night. Also his parting shot at me... "A wise man once said 'don't through mud into the wind, or it will cover you as well." ummm I think he meant throw not through. According to my dictionary through means to "move in one side and out the other". Have fun guys and gals!

[Quoth Aaron the Mod: Goodbye, Fool

I will apologize for Aaron's behavior right now, as I am the Head Fan Fiction Moderator. I personally referred his posts over to the Administrators as soon as he attacked Kopykat Kakashi, and I put in a formal complaint when he made the posts cited above. The Administrative Team has been dealing with the situation since then. Our "three strikes" policy applies to moderators as well as members, but strikes against moderators are posted and discussed in the locked forums.

[Lady Lark closes the thread and threatens possible actions against those involved for going offtopic. In the arguments forum.

I also do not want to see this spreading to certain journal fen communities or livejournals (And Yes I am watching). Again, it is in violation of rule #4 and I will be enforcing it this time - to everyone. I don't bloody care if you are a mod on this site or not. --Lady Lark]

That is correct. Posts in Arguments can be locked for violating the rules. Off-topic remarks are not allowed per rule #2. The reason that we have Arguments is for people to vent, but the argument STILL has to have a topic if it's going to be a valid forum post. Lady Lark specified "if you are a mod on this site or not" because Aaron was in violation of several of the rules of arguments and was publicly modslapped for vigilante modding, so the warning included him. To my knowledge, he is one of only three members facing banning or other moderator action from the Arguments forum.

It doesn't matter if all of you want to keep this wank going for eternity, or if every person who posts here is also a member at MediaMiner. Arguments Rule #4 is directed to people who *specifically* and *intentionally* take the argument outside the forum by copying and pasting from the Arguments thread to another source. It is not JUST about Fandom Wank, though Lady Lark admitted that this site *does* see copying and pasting and thus warned against it. In the past, Arguments forum posts have spilled into LiveJournals, PMs, IMs, the MediaMiner chat room (when we still had an official chat room), AIM chats, other forums and other websites. The material is *usually* used to attack others and because the source is quoted, the *others* come back to us. THAT makes it a MediaMiner problem. The Arguments forum is so that members can keep MediaMiner-related venting ON MediaMiner. We cannot and do not try to control what is said all over the web - that's why the moderators try to keep MediaMiner problems on MediaMiner. We can only control what happens on MediaMiner forums and on the MediaMiner site.

Just a side note on the "I am watching" thing - many of the moderators at MediaMiner see Fandom Wank because we have the links forwarded to us. That's how I was first made aware of this community in general, and every time the name "MediaMiner" comes up, I inevitably get a link in my PM box, my IM box or my e-mail. :)

Too bad....if this poster was using Rice and Hamilton as examples of writers that are her favorite authors...then headdesk! Headdesk!

If not- let's all write Hamilton and tell her to STOP WRITING- Because seriously? If she gives a rat's ass, then I will be one rat's ass richer- and if she stops publishing her books, the world will be a better place....or at least a smarter one....So WIN WIN!

Although, then there will be less books to mock....so maybe not:)

What I find amusing is that The One That Most Not Be Named
said she would never post on fanfiction.net again since they didn’t kiss her inflated ass reprimand the 14 y/o who borrowed one of the characters. But then again that woman has amnesia when it suits her, like the time she send the legion of terror to attack the girl and swore she never did anything to provoke them. merely bitching about it on every website she was on and posting a link to the girl

What I found preposterous is that she blatantly used Rumiko Takahashi to create a BNF status en now by selling her own stories for 5 dollars per download.
