SF Wankiness
The star of the new Battlestar Galactica show tells diehard fans of the OS, "Don't watch the new series, you won't like it."

Seriously, is there even that much of a fanbase for the OS?
I don't think I've seen zinefic at any cons in at least 10 years. And Jebus, anything would have to be better than the OS, anyway.

Hey, I remember it more than "Welcome back, Kotter."

And I remember someone mentioning this on their lj several months ago. Mainly because she was aghast that Starbuck is now a girl. Upon reading that, I thought, "... but then the call sign/nickname won't make sense. The heck?"

However, said person was torn between boycotting and watching it for the guy who played Hornblower in the A&E series, who I think is playing Apollo. (Ione something?) And the tights.

Well, to be fair, Welcome Back Kotter sucked, too.

I used to hang with a group who role-played BSG in real life. It made me want to kick puppies.

Since I barely remember the faces of the people in "Welcome back, Kotter," much less anything else, I'll take your word for it. ^_-

... Did you have any preference as to what breed of puppy?

I have never actually kicked a puppy, so no.

::shudder::

We're roach-free, thank God, but we have...millipedes. *SCREAM!*

Watching a promo disc w/Fruits Basket, and am getting your icon in stereo.

$1.99 and the 'hilarious' antics of the US voice actors. Yup.

In spite all of that, I find myself rather liking it.

*snerk*

I got sucked into it thanks to my friend first getting the (crappy) fansubs, then buying the DVDs. (You know one really likes the show when they're willing to shell out $40/disk.) I currently have the 2nd disk (borrowed) for screen cap purposes and v. 1-7 of the manga. But I really want to watch the fourth disk--those fansubs were *really* crappy.

I've definitely turned elitist--I tried watching the dub when I had the first disk and couldn't last five minutes.

Centipedes ::shudder:: I live on the top floor of a 120-yr old house. . .it's a toss-up which is worse, those multi-legged bastards or the occasional giant spider.

2003-07-14 06:12 am UTC (link)
Do you remember what season he joined the cast? I'm thinking second or third, and I don't recall what happened to the previous lieutenant/captain/whatever--did he bite the bullet?

Ha! I know this one--he actually came in towards the end of the first season--the original lt. was played by Gregory Sierra, and he (character) got shot because he (actor) decided he wanted off the show. (BIG MV fan here--wrote fanfic, the whole bit)

And I also have a photo album full of pictures of DJ when he competed in our city's offshore powerboat races.

I thought it was something like that. As I recall, his "leaving" was rather... abrupt. :P

And I had a *huge* crush on Tubbs (sp?). I'm not too sure about the actor's name--was it Phillip Michael Thomas?--but he was *pretty*. ;D

That comment would be referring to Jamie Bamber, who played Archie Kennedy in Hornblower, and who is playing Apollo in the new BSG series.

Mostly I'm just ticked because there were rumors of Starbuck being played by Michael Shanks at one point, and my brain (and other things) exploded at the possibility of those two actors' characters being a slashable pair.

*bemused sigh*

In what way are you saying the actor (I'm assuming you're referring to Olmos) is being stupid? Warning the old-time fans that there's major derivations? Pissing off the execs?

(Man, I'm all over this thread. Must be good timing. Or something.)

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Re:

Both, the first more in the manner than in the action, the second is stupid period.
If he wanted to warn people it's going to be different, that's cool. But he wasn't saying "Be warned, original version fans, this is different!", he was saying, "Original version fans, STAY AWAY! DO NOT WATCH THIS! YOU'LL HATE IT!"
Basically, if you're an actor and you go out and tell a large portion of your potential audience "Don't watch this movie/show, you'll hate it!", you're preeetty dumb.
And it is stupid to blatantly piss off the execs for no real purpose, because when all is said and done, the execs determine whether you'll be working or not... they sign your paychecks and decide whether your salary is justified.
Olmos basically just pulled on a red shirt.

Well I'm just happy they're remaking something that doesn't make me feel like I should be in a rest home.

[Stocks up on Oil of Olay]

And I'll agree with Rann. It's one thing to warn fans that this isn't gonna be exactly like the original, but it's another entirely to tell folks they'll hate something they haven't even watched.

Just wanted that clarified.

I'm not really trying to defend him, but I recall seeing a mention that Olmos had been receiving hate mail that basically trashed him and the other actors for the changes. (And that really doesn't make sense to me, since the actors don't have any control on how their characters are written to begin with. The hate mail should be going to the execs.)
