ANN: When wanks falls through the cracks, we catch it!
I knew if I waited a night this would explode. ANN links a press statement from Bandai that warns fansubbers not to fansub the new Ghost in the Shell: SOLID STATE SOCIETY. Of course, the ANN forum discusses the topic of fansubs in a mature and intelligent manner. It's growing.

Steventheeunuch: Moreso we hate self-righteous morons with entitlement-complexes who potentially hurt the industry that supplies us with our interests.

...

Pleroma: Lol @ internet police. Really now, the RIAA witchunt was by far the most massive anti-piracy effort of the last decade and its effects are barely even noticeable nowadays (I've yet to fail to download any song I've wanted) so a company like Bandai with only a tiny portion of the RIAA's resources wont get jack shit done.

THe future of the internet will encompass many subnets of absolute annonimity, as it should be. Badai et all can keep blowing all the hot air their want but it won't change a damn thing.

PS: I don't like GITS, but intellectual property nazis make me laugh.

Josh7289: So if you're just trying to defend your own product which you have the sole legal right to sell, you suddenly become a Nazi? Wow, maybe you should mull this one over a little more -- your viewpoint on this subject is way out of whack.

jsevakis: This comment is very indicative of this new breed of what I call "techno-communism" that I'm seeing more and more in places like Slashdot and the communities around anime. Since pretty much all media can now be broken down into information, and these techno-communists are married to the idea that "information wants to be free" (logic is apparently under lock-and-key if the data on my HD now has a will of its own).

...

nagashi: I for one will be downloading the fansub, without guilt. I will never buy more of their dubtitled, close captions for subs, non-backup-able, drm'ed crap.

If they provide it at a very low cost in an open format (divx/xvid or some such format) that I can easily move around between computers, they stand a chance at making $1 (and probaby not more than $1) off me.

Down with Copyright!
Down with Licensors!
Down with voice 'talent'!
Down with Localization!

Up with free media, fair use, and privacy!

Culture in it's various forms are the property of the people, and we will do with it what we wish: rip, subtitle, scanlate, make amvs of, and distribute with impunity.

Long live fansubs!

zac: You're an idiot.

nagashi: Always good to know that the fine fine editors of this site reduce themselves to name calling. Go you!

zac: But you are. You are clearly of reduced mental function. Why should I have to stop short of saying the truth simply because I work here? I shouldn't. You're allowed to come into my forums and say whatever garbage you like, which means I'm allowed to call you on it in whatever manner I choose.

I find it incredibly amusing that I learned about the next GitS installment (and I like GitS, damn it) from f_w rather than from somewhere like an anime site. *is sad*

How dare they tell them not to fansub an anime? Because, you know, there aren't any other shows that could be (and need to be) fansubbed for the enjoyment of us non-Japanese speaking folk.

(Reply to this)

Hmm...they seem pissed at the terrible state of the localization.

They could always buy the Japanese version. :-)

And a dollar an episode. Given the recent explosion of thin packs, I think we are pretty close to that price right now.

Word is that thin packs aren't going to be so common anymore. Why? Because the people who collected the single DVD columes compained that the thin packs were so cheap.

*facepalm* As much as I support fansubbing on projects if it doesn't appear that there's going to be sub-titled international release (I am an evvil sub-elitist), if the company says don't fansub... don't fansub.

Let's not set a precendent for companies suing the crap out of fansubbers, please.

Especially since the companies are happy enough to let people fansub as long as they're taking down when it gets licensed. These people are acting like fansubbing is legal until then, which it isn't.

Wordy McWord.

Bandai is notoroious for clamping down on anyone that dares to cross into their yard without their permission (a few Anime Expo's ago they got something like three companies kicked out for distributing black-market copies of Gundam models) and hey, they have a license for it.

I'm all for fansubs, but I'm also fully aware that we're in serious gray waters here. If we're going to keep what we've got going, we need to at least not sub the stuff that is licensed.

Of course, there are some companies out there (I think ADV is one) where they are ZOMG FANSUBBERS ARE THE ULTIMATE EBIL!!!!!!!!111! even on stuff without a license. That annoys the crap out of me.

Wait, you mean I'm going to have to PAY for GitS? With...money? Like I'm buying it or something? Oppression, I tells ya! [/sarcasm]

Seriously, I might have the slightest problem with it if they, oh say, bought the license and proceeded to lock it up in some cellar for years on end (Yes, Viz, that means you), but they aren't.

I'm not even fond of GiTS... But, thanks to Nagashi, I may buy the full DVD box-set and watch the dub version in entirity, JUST OUT OF SPITE. (And am I the only person who really likes dubs, most of the time? I just like being able to recognize the VAs and like how the voices fit the characters, but I can't really do that too well with the Japanese VAs.)

I prefer dubs also. I find subtitles distracting so I rather watch dub or raw. (Not that I know Japanese, I can make the dialogue up in my own head.)

The dub version of GiTS is pretty good at least for the TV series. Features a lot of the same talent as Cowboy Bebop.

This literally makes me sick. You're supposed to stop fansubbing things when a company announces it! This isn't like the good old days where all you had were a few companies releasing dubbed stuff at thirty bucks a tape.

And with a movie like Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society how could they NOT think it wasn't going to be picked up immediately? I'm with what other people have said in the replies already: Just pack it in, move on and fansub something that WON'T be picked up anytime soon.

What I find amusing is the guy who started ranting about "technocommunism", with the apparent subtext that breaking of copyright leads straight to the gulag and a monotonous soybean diet for all.

(disclaimer: has trotskyist sympathies, for anyone who remembers what that means)

non-backup-able, drm'ed crap.

See, that's what I hate most about commercial DVD's and CD's. If I bought it, I want to be able to see it easily and to copy it between different machines. I am thus boycotting all copy-protected things because it doesn't stop the criminals (otherwise I couldn't download the stuff instead) it just makes it harder for someone - like my poor technologically impaired mom - who can't work around region codes or would've had to fight Microsoft every fucking time Windows XP died unless I supplied her with pirated copies.

*mops up*

However, most of the anti-copyright crowd are so stupid they should be fined for that, because until artist can eat air, free art ain't gonne be fair or workable to anyone.

And something like GitS doesn't need the "free advertizment" garnered from fansubs, so save that for some tiny obscure anime about a really wacked-out concept plz

1. Berne Convention.
2. I just have the most amusing image of Section 9 decloaking in the house of some pirate, aiming their guns at his head, and then Motoko simply saying "Stop pirating, jackass."

And then they're gone.

And the poor guy will never so much as go to YouTube again.
