Literary RPF Fraud Wank with A.N. Wilson and Suspects
Posted for a mouse on wank report. I love author wank, and this one even features a fake love letter between two authors, making it honourary RPF.

Okay. So, this is a link to a New York Times article about two feuding biographers. One, A. N. Wilson, has just been discovered to be the victim of a hoax, in the form of a fake letter which he published in his recent book. The letter contains a rude message about Wilson. The chief suspect is the biographer with whom he has been feuding.

The story in short in the NY Times.

There's a link about the feud in the Guardian and this article includes a denial of blame by the chief suspect. And a columnist's reaction here.

It's all really rather civilized -- if you discount the rudeness of the letter and the folks pointing, laughing and denying culpability, but I think the letter elevates this to wank status.

ETA: A mouse informs us that Hillier has confessed to scamming Wilson.

So, essentially, in the Betjeman fandom, one BNF creates a troll sockpuppet to mess with a rival BNF's head. And all the commenters are gleeful wankas laughing at the hilarious trolling.

AWESOME. XD XD XD

And we've also got Snacky's Law! -- Hillier is quoted condemning Wilson as “despicable . . . a playground bully”

SCORE!

I love this wank. LOVE.

The guy the biography is about is dead- and it's not an "official" biography anyway. Right?

The fellow writing the contested biography in included a letter to prove 2 people had an affair- so, made up, or real, I wouldn't consider this biography "high literature" in the first place.

All parties involve (including the columnist) act like whiny, oppressed brats. And there's a feud as well.

Hmmmmmm. I think I'll form a support group for the poor, dead, British poet laureate John Betjeman who has wanky biographers.

*waves the banner high*

Yummy biography wank- I don't think I've seen this before.....

Hillier is quoted condemning Wilson as “despicable . . . a playground bully” and Wilson says Hillier is “old and malignant”. Hoorah!

The response of all right-thinking people will be to roll around on the carpet shrieking with laughter.

I think I'm in love with this Libby Purves person.

This is the best wank in the world! If only because of finding out that Betjeman had a fling with WH Auden.

Also, I'm on the side of whoever is making fun of A.N. Wilson. I had to read one of his books for my abroad program last year and it was not enjoyable.

I'm so disappointed that one of the articles actually spelled out the message. I spent an inordinate amount of time looking at the tiny print in the NY Times image to figure it out for myself. ♥

It's beautiful.

*grin* I'm so glad someone picked this up. My mother pointed it out to me and I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

I do want to point out though, that Honor Tracy, the author with whom Betjamin was supposedly having an affair, is in fact female, so no RPS, sadly.

I love this. I just absolutely love it. You've got to love something that involves famous, supposedly dignified English authors and a prank as juvenile as that letter. I just love it and want to keep it.

This is possibly the most high-toned wank that will ever be posted here. It's just so genteel and British (and not in a lame way like any wank involving AJ Hall). And it involves two guys who've devoted years to writing about the same obscure (Maybe he's much better known in the UK, I don't know, but I'd never even heard of John Betjeman before and now I want to hunt down his work to see if it's as good as these wankers think it is) poet rather than two people who've devoted weeks to writing about Sephiroth and Cloud doing it.

Beautiful. Bevis Hillier wins a Internet (Or maybe he'd prefer a quill).

Oh, and at Libby Purves' bit about Paradise Lost and the cat. ;)

"I wanted to paint a portrait of Betjeman, not assemble an encyclopedia," he added, in a thinly disguised swipe at Hillier's magnum opus.

"I feel very proud of my biography," Hillier told the Daily Mail. "In 100 years, I believe people will still be reading Hillier. But I'm not sure they will be quoting Andrew Norman Wilson, known to his friends as Norm."

Damn. That is some fine passive-aggressiveness.

Ahhhh, I love the smell of smugness in the morning.

I'm currently reading Joseph Epstein's "Snobbery: The American Version" and coincidentally, just finished the chapter detailing how there ain't no snob like an academic snob. And here's a walking, typing, wanking example!

Plus, literary hoaxes? So. Much. Fun.
