Geez.

The wank is painful to bear from both sides--and it's a hard debate on whether the artfaggery of

krets & co. or the whininess of

webkin is worse. (What can I say? I hate art fags.)

I mean, seriously. It's a LJ community open to the public. Of course, some things that are technically crap are going to win.

But you know what? A lot of things that have no technique whatsoever and aren't all that aesthetically pleasing are lauded. I mean, look at Picasso--in his day, I'm sure everyone thought he was a joke. Simmons Hall (the new MIT dorm), which is an EYESORE in the opinion of many students there, was lauded in architecture circles at its opening last year.

Then again, it sounds like fanfiction.net syndrome is in the air...

How can you alter a photograph 'more than the rules' in a Photoshop community? :O Isn't Photoshop all about being able digitally skew pictures in any way, shape, or form your fancy takes you? Adobe: Gestapo 6.0.

....it tempts me to go doctor a few digipics in Photoshop just to see if they'll pass muster. Ha.

Well, you could argue that it isn't a Photoshop community per se, just a digital photo community with rules about alteration. But it's still very stupid. Photographs have been altered since the invention of photography, and pretending that Photoshop is the origin of all the mess is ridiculous.

And the whole idea that somehow, a perfect photograph is completely truthful... no photograph is completely truthful. Even the simplest picture, not altered the slightest bit in the lab or Photoshop is cropped, isn't it? You take a picture of a sunset at the beach, but you exclude, say, a dog peeing a little off to the right. The only real truth is to be there, and even then, there's arguments against that.
