We now return you to your regularly scheduled wank, HP-style
This wank is almost too predictable to bother posting, but a few gems caught my eye. It's not repetitive: It's classic. Right.

Surprising exactly no one who has devoted more than three seconds to understanding Catholicism, a high-ranking Catholic priest -- "the Pope's chief exorcist," according to the news -- says Harry Potter is evil. And -- praise Godwin! -- compares the character to Stalin and Hitler, who were apparently possessed by the devil. (Well, if anyone would know that, it would be the chief exorcist, no?) Mugglenet and The Leaky Cauldron link to the story, and the slavering fanbrats wanksplode.

There's lots of the usual shock, lolz, cries of "IF ONLY HE'D READ THE BOOKS HE'D UNDERSTAAAAAND" (... yeah, I don't think so), and snark about the "free publicity" this will garner for Jo until she's bigger than Jesus.

There are many elegant defenses of the books, such as this one:

I don't think Lumos or any of these confrences created or spawned evil, says LunchBoxGhost who clearly was not invited to the good room parties. We got together and rejoiced in the meeting of new people who are ALL a work of God. Next thing, this dude will be saying that we, as fans, need to be silenced before we corrupt the entire earth...

Meanwhile, Heather and Lyet take the high ground in the Church-vs.-HP debate:

someone should tell them that we would rather have are children read harry potter then spend time with priest who like to do things to children they shouldn't.

Harry Potter has never molested anyone. Dude, I have some fanfic links I could send you ...

i-e-k waxes poetic about the exorcist's inner life:

Instead of pointing his finger at our young and brave fiction hero Harry Potter battling the evil called Voldemort this exorcist should look into his mirror with honesty and explore what kind of person really looks back. To my opinion, Mr. Amorth would have to discover a lot regarding his title 'Chief Exorcist'. What kind of bad spirit might have possessed him, by the way? What is it inside himself he would have to fight and what he perhaps tries to project onto the outside?

Naturally, there's lots of anti-Catholic and anti-organized religion rhetoric, like this gem from Zach:

2 words....FUCK U MISTER POPE!!! I'm Catholic, and I am always on you're side...but this is pushing it!!! GGGGRRRRZZZZZZ TO THE POPE!

Then, naturally, the VERY FUCKING OFFENDED Catholics descend. jenn gets sanctimonious on their asses:

I will say this again--will people PLEASE stop taking potshots at Catholics generally? It's ignorant and bigoted.

Every person on this board is a member of some kind of community--faith, nation, race, ethnicity, whatever. And in every community, there are individuals and even leaders who say stupid things. To then ascribe the same stupidity to every single member of that community is asinine. Negative generalizations of that sort are the roots of racism and evil.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Some of you need to look in the mirror.

And blames Leaky for the hate speech she's being exposed to:

I can't believe TLC allows people to spout off bigoted nonsense in its comment sections. Honestly, what if I generalized and said that some of the responses here made me think that HP fans are anti-Catholic bigots? (Which would make no sense, because I am an HP fan and a Catholic, like about a zillion other people my kids and I see every day).

Though kikib takes it further, asking TLC to exercise better judgment when it comes to news like this:

Well, Isn't this nice. Generalizing about a religion. 13 + pages bashing the Roman Catholic church. Nice.

Frankly, I don't see how this item should have been posted in the first place. Leaky, you should have known this would happen. Isn't there at least one Catholic on Leaky's staff who would have been able to say that this is a non-story? It is NOT an official position of the Vatican. It's even an old story, out a week or so ago.

As a Catholic I am deeply offended at what I have read here. This subject rears it's ugly head too often and Leaky, IMO, should stay above the fray. Debating it disolves into ugly hate speech and very little tolerance of differing views. So one Priest happens to make a remark and the media ran with it making it look as if it were from the Pope himself. I'm stunned.

Sensing a disturbance in the fen, Leaky's own Melissa comes to the rescue!

Hey, guys -

This is a quick note, and a quick reminder: Most of the comments here have been respectful, but we all recognize that this is a very inflammatory topic. As such, we have to remind you of a few things:

-Meanspirited posts are not tolerated; they will be deleted, and repeat offenders banned
-One priest's opinion does not represent that of the entire Roman Catholic Church; the very, VERY many priests who have come out publicly pro-Harry Potter speak to that. Not to mention the millions of Catholics (myself among them) who hold the books dear and see them as not conflicting with the religious works.
-If this thread takes a mean turn, it will simply be closed. We don't want to do that, because you all always offer such intelligent and lively debate (as Jo would say) - so, please make sure when writing your posts, you stop for a second and remember to be courteous to each other.

Thank you!

Nothing's been deleted since I started surfing the comments. Just sayin'.

My favorite bit of wank, though, is the tangent about the Pope's WWII shenanigans.

Leif Longbottom advises, I wouldn't take seriously anything said by a guy who's job it is to help people cope with being deranged by playing allong with their psychosis. I wouldn't take seriously anything his nazi boss Joey Rats says either.

And Jimmy smells hypocrisy: I love the fact that he compares Harry Potter to Hitler, despite the fact that the Pope himself was in the Hitler Youth. Obviously, the Pope had such a strong sense of morality that he chose to serve Hitler rather than oppose him. Peter Pettigrew, anyone?

But oh, we must not say such libelous things about the Pope! wldkt1 and Louise set us straight:

I'm sorry, German Law REQUIRED ALL youth to join Hitler Youth. There was NO choice involved there. He was 14 at the time, what was he supposed to do. Boy, that was a good story, way to only use the part that supported your argument. I too agree that it is silly that this was said, but throwing out something like that, after the Pope has been quoted saying that he refused to go to meetings and a father that was opposed to Nazism is callous and ridiculous,

I'm back again. I have just read through alot of comments and I seem to be fighting a 1 man battle here. I do agree that it is crazy to think the Harry Potter books are evil but I think it is very extremley rude to make a fool of the man who said it with comments that are so far from the point of this debate such as inferring him to a nazi which was a very low point in his life and considering he was completely against the war and didn't want to be part of it but didn't have much choice as he was living in Germany and was obviously terrified as many people would be including myself. And I don't think he was saying that the war wasn't Hitler's fault I think it was just that Hitler choose to go with the devil's ways and was therefore possesed after his decision.

And, from Muggle Kylie, the most insightful analysis of the day:

are they just angry that the HP books might be as popular as the Holly Bible???
