Australians can be so amusing.
Irwin, ah yes. We've had wank in LJ, we've had wank on JF - you didn't think that high profile people weren't going to keep mum were you?

Germaine Greer, Australian writer, feminist (mostly in exile), and who is generally as popular as Irwin was (at one time) has decided to tell the world how she thinks about the 'Great Australian', in her trademark, understated, gentle way.

She writes about her feelings in the UK paper, The Guardian. You can find the whole thing here, it is quite cutting (and somewhat amusing, depending on your perspective).

Some choice quotes for the lazy or not interested:

Irwin was the real Crocodile Dundee, a great Australian, an ambassador for wildlife, a global phenomenon, a superhuman generator of merchandise, books, interactive video-games and action figures. The only creatures he couldn't dominate were parrots. A parrot once did its best to rip his nose off his face. Parrots are a lot smarter than crocodiles.

The only time Irwin ever seemed less than entirely lovable to his fans (as distinct from zoologists) was when he went into the Australia Zoo crocodile enclosure with his month-old baby son in one hand and a dead chicken in the other. For a second you didn't know which one he meant to feed to the crocodile. If the crocodile had been less depressed it might have made the decision for him.

There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle. Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress. Every snake badgered by Irwin was at a huge disadvantage, with only a single possible reaction to its terrifying situation, which was to strike. Easy enough to avoid, if you know what's coming. Even my cat knew that much.

Some snakes are described as aggressive, but, if you're a snake, unprovoked aggression doesn't make sense. Snakes on a plane only want to get off. But Irwin was an entertainer, a 21st-century version of a lion-tamer, with crocodiles instead of lions.

Howard is now Irwin's chief mourner, which is only fair, seeing that Irwin announced that Howard is the greatest leader the world has ever seen.

Ah politics. Greer ends her article:

The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn.

I know, too soon, too soon, is the expected response. Well you're right. Of course Australian politicians had to respond. Queensland Premier (the state where Irwin has his zoo and lived)*

"Germaine Greer is just wrong and I just can't imagine anyone being more insensitive and, frankly, stupid," he said.

"This argument is just extreme radical rubbish from Germaine Greer and it couldn't come at a more insensitive time.

"Any suggestion that he (Mr Irwin) mistreated animals is just rubbish ... he educated a generation."

Well, it's true, he did educate the world about Australian animals, I think both Greer and Beattie can agree on that.

Finally, the The Federal Opposition's Kevin Rudd

"Germaine Greer should just stick a sock in it" Yeah. That will tell her!

Whose betting on how, and when Greer will respond?

And we still haven't had the funeral.

*The elections are on Saturday, he has to say something, *and all fellow Queenslanders know what a media shy leader he is* < / sarcam>

Heard about this earlier, on the television. I think it was Inside Edition. My only comment would be, "Bitch, please."

Heaven forbid anyone do good for the animal kingdom while earning a living doing something they like. I expect a lot of the Croc Hunter merchindise proceeds to go back to charity for the environment.

For some reason, I was under the impression that Australians didn't really like Irwin. But that could have just been my friend from HS.

I hear God is a Jew who likes to haggle. And, you know, one Australian celebrity is as good as another to him...

Germaine better watch out. The God cabal will be coming for her.

A lot of people are getting angry at Greer but the point of what she's saying is kinda important - don't fuck with the animals. Treat them with respect. If you don't, you get pah-owned like Irwin did.

I don't know if she entirely understood the nature of the accident, I don't either, but I think there's a lot of truth in what Greer said.

Greer might have a point if she knew how to keep her damn mouth shut for the length of public decency. The man isn't even in the grave yet, for God's sakes. His family is less than three days into the mourning process. The last thing they want to hear is people critcizing him for his flaws when they have to accept the fact that their husband/father is never coming home again.

The only person Greer is benefitting here is herself. Stirring up controversy to get her name out by using the death of a popular man as a soap box. Now THAT is disgusting.

Snakes on a plane only want to get off.

The snakes on the plane were doused by snake-aphrodesiac. 'Getting off' was exactly what they wanted to do, they just never did (aside from the one that got it on with a lei).

Okay...disagree with the man's tactics, fine. Didn't like what he did, fine.

But what is really the point of kicking the man when he's dead?
You don't have to kiss his ass and call him St. Steve, but geez.

8D "I think Steve Irwin was crap!" *KICK* "Look at me, I'm RELEVANT!"

...determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn.

Oh heavens noes! Not that! God forbid children want to be millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners! 8D That's the gateway drug to Nazism! XD

Did she write that before the full details of his death came out? She implies that he was huggling the stingray and we know that's not what happened.

Last I heard, his wife doesn't even KNOW yet, cos she's hiking or something out the ass end of nowhere in Tasmania or something.

Anybody confirm/deny that for me?

Mostly tl;dr, but I actually saw all this on the news anyway. The "stick a sock in it" quote cracked me up (so stupid, yet so right).

I can't stand Greer at the best of time, and she is in perfect wanking form here. Ugh.

For anyone who is interested, here is an insightful article on Greer's opinions and the general media circus everyone in Australia has been subjected to, from the Sydney Morning Herald:

I actually read an article about this in the paper. Apparently she was being interviewed about Steve Irwin, and called the people who were mourning him and setting up mini-shrines in his zoo 'stupid morons' and 'idiots'.

To that, I say - fuck you with a stingray barb SIDEWAYS. You can diss the man all you want, but if you're calling thousands of people idiots for missing a man they admired, you're a douche.

Ah, Ms Greer, she so wanky. I apologise to the UK for foisting her upon you.

Remember how wanky she was when she stormed out of Celebrity Big Brother? She tried to stage a nude sit-down protest against the tyranny of BB but no-one joined in. Then left in a huff.

Re: Steve Irwin, though - yes, it's a media circus, hands up who's surprised? I reckon he was probably a lovely bloke, and it's sad that his family have lost him so young. But that's about the extent of my view of him so I happily ignore the rest of the media coverage about him.

Dear UK,

Thanks for taking Germaine Greer off our hands.

Love,
Australia.

***

Srsly, I've been watching his show since I was seven. It's not like he says "LOL LETS GO POKE SHIT TODAY" - if he's not trying to relocate crocodiles from areas where they're affecting livestock or they could be injured/infected i dunno, he's collecting specimens for his zoo or doing documentaries about them. Most of the time if he didn't move them, either people would be seriously injured or the animals would be.

I honestly think Australia is more embarrassed by people like Peter Andre, Shane Warne and Pauline Hanson than they are by someone who actually did something positive for the environment and his local area.

Hm. Call my cynical if you must, but I can't help wondering if she'd feel that way if Irwin WASN'T such a fan of Howard?

Personally, I am not a fan of Howard (classic understatement right there) - and Irwin kind of made me cringe a bit ... but really, it wouldn't have hurt for her to be a bit more sensitive - but I guess if she did that, she wouldn't be getting all this attention now.
