Current mood: amused

Nobody expects the m/m Inquisition!

This was brought to my attention via my flist on LJ:

Romantic Times Book Reviews publisher Carol Stacey has an inquiry about m/m erotic romances:

Is this really a turn on for women and a "growing" market? I have been resistant to review them in Romantic Times BOOKreviews because I do not feel we have many readers who want this type of book. I would love your input on this in a poll I have created. [Note: You have to be registered to vote]

Cue ten pages of very polite wank in the poll forum. Well mostly polite. It gets juicier the longer it brews.

Highlights:

As the "love them" option soon takes the lead in the poll accusations of trolls, shenanigans, conspiracy and sockpuppetry fly in the direction of the posting m/m lovers. OMG!!! It's the intrawebs and it's trying to push its gay m/m agenda!11!

Jenster: That said, I find it EXTREMELY interesting that the overwhelming majority of posters on this thread are: 1 - For M/M romance and 2 - Not regular posters. Frankly, it makes me a little suspicious.

Could it be that someone informed the genre lovers? What do you think?

"Brokeback Mountain" is repeatedly mentioned as the prototype of m/m romance.

Robert_Cloud defender of everything Free Speech and 1st Amendment: If RT doesn't do m/m reviews the terrorists win! I say so, and I don't even like it because I was molested as a child, so there!

A fangirl who of course hast to ask the wanky question: Why would anybody not like m/m?

Many endeavors of JUST MY OPINION!

On page five BZH Anne says its not her cuppa as she's straight AND celibate. She then rants on about the ev0l gay lifestyle:

To extol a life choice that is more detrimental than most (their suicide rate is 6 times the national average. that alone should tell y'all something!) can hardly be healthy either for them or for the reader or for the society at large. Since it exists, live with it. But DON'T glamorize it! This is as bad as the rappers glamorizing gangsterism and violence against women. The road to hell is steep enough that those on it take little steps to keep from falling straight down. But even little steps will get ya there, eventually. And then what? Say ooops, wrong turn? Too late.

Finally on page six PauletteW brings the classic:  m/m = pedophile what are the authors/readers thinking?

Responses: Er no, do some research. (Well, I said it was a polite wank.)

PauletteW: Fuck your research! Priests molest boys and teachers their students! I saw it on tv!!!

Erastes mocks one of the more bigoted posts ...

I hesitate from replying, actually, because although I know bigotry like yours exists, I don't like to glamorise it by stooping to mock it.

... which makes Glee (a mod?) appear (page nine) and delete it:

I erased most of your quote as your comments seem harsh to me and I trust you will reconsider your statements about BZH Anne. If you want your choices and respect it would be greatly appreciated if you show someone else respect for the choices they have made. Your comments about someone else have offended me; this is a message board with lots of viewers-let's keep it positive please.

Pleaze, won't somebody think of the bigots!?

Robin_Cloud to the rescue: Dumbass! If you have to censor someone, censor the bigot not the mocker!!11!

And fun is had by all.

Hey, did I mention this is my first wank report? *runs away*

Yeah, that sound you might be hearing right now? Just me repeatedly beating my head against a wall.

The suicide rates might be high, because you used studies wrong and because society kinda hates people like that a lot, as shown by, say, people who beat up a gay man, and others cheering over it?

Sigh.

I liked Erastes' comment. Hit it right on the mark, guess the mod didn't like that too much ^^; Poor poor bigots, so oppressed :/

...Okay, so I suppose it DOES matter to some people, but lately this has been puzzling me more and more. Why should your sexual orientation hold you back from empathizing with characters of other sexual orientations? I laugh when someone white tells me that she can't empathize with a black character because of skin color, or when someone male claims he's of the wrong gender to appreciate any female protagonist. Is the sexual orientation bit any different? Maybe it matters to getting aroused by the porn, but does it actually hold someone back from liking/cheering on a character?

Because if so, EW.

Oh yeah, because the m/f relationships described in most romance novels are so TOTALLY REALISTIC!

Not my cuppa as I'm straight AND celibate.

I get the "straight" part (well, sort of), but why should "celibate" have anything to do with reading or not porn gay romance novels? As obviously she's reading het novels anyway?

This seems to totally ignore the fact that there are quite a number of romance novels with gay characters in them already. THe last... four I read had: A sports atar having an affair with the heroine's roommate (as a slasher, I picked that up /before/ it was said in the book too *g*), the late husband of the heroine (the hero was his brother) who wasn't a particularly nice character, the heroine's ex-husband and her stepfather (also not very nice characters) and a a gay make-up artist best friend who was cute if a teeny bit of a stereotype.

I mean, it's already there, admittedly in minor characters, though honestly anyone not the hero or heroine is usually a minor character in a romance novel anyway.

And that is just scratchign the surface too.

It's RT. They couldn't give an objective review if their life depended on it. Really, what is the big deal? If it's a genre you don't read, what do you need to read the reviews for?
The ones that I've read with gay minor characters he's either the sterotypical "Will" type or in historicals, everybody is okay with it and knows. Not exact accurate, which does bother me a bit. Emma Holly is the only one I can think of that had accutal romantic scenes with two male characters, but she's more erotica than romance. Yes, there is a difference.

Hey, do we bitch about the sheer volume of the het-lit (movies, tv, Public Displays of Affection) out there?

Personally, I'm fine with heterosexuals as long as they keep it behind closed doors, and don't bother me with it.

To extol a life choice that is more detrimental than most (their suicide rate is 6 times the national average. that alone should tell y'all something!) can hardly be healthy either for them or for the reader or for the society at large. Since it exists, live with it. But DON'T glamorize it!

Damn skippy! Instead, we should demonise those filthy filthy homosexuals! We can beat on them or mock them, or simply bring the full weight of Society's Disapproval onto them, then maybe we'll be rid of them when they decide to go off thems- oh wait.

On page five BZH Anne says its not her cuppa as she's straight AND celibate.

I'm a virginal straight chick too, but femslash cranks my motor. Mmmm, fictional chix0r.

Your male/male romance brings all the slash fans to the yard! (Duh.)

Seriously though, this thread is like a plethora of ignorance. People are ignorant about m/m relationships, ignorant about pedophilia, ignorant about people who like m/m romances, and even ignorant of the fact that m/m romance novels already exist, kthnx.

And yet everyone has an opinion about all of it they just must express. It's almost cute (in a kindergarten sort of way).

Dear PauletteW,
do you know what a prejudice is?

No? Thought so.

PS: Buttsmecks is so hot. :)

If the OP wanted a poll that really reflected the average book-buyer's opinions, the Internets were the wrong place to post it.

I actually hope that RT doesn't pick up any sort of m/m erotic romances, as it will most like consist of a whiny, needy, crying hero, a dark mysterious brooding stranger as the antiquated love interest, teh OMG eb0l society that tries to keep them apart, a bitchy female antagonist who will wonder in more subtle ways about how anything can be better than the feel of a vagina a woman's love, and some vague old libertine who has the dark secret of being irrefutably gay in his younger years, complete with tragic results.

Wait, didn't they already write this? Wasn't it called..."Gravitation: The Novel"?

But speaking as a straight, celibate, anti-terrorist American with the right to free speech...that's just my opinion.

plz to be seeing more boobies, k thx

"Brokeback Mountain" is repeatedly mentioned as the prototype of m/m romance.

Doesn't prototype imply that it was first? Becasue. I think we can be fairly sure that no, it wasn't. And I am so sick of BBM being held up as THE Gay Love Story. Everybody dies, for fuck's sake and a bad time is had by most. The Gay Cowboys deserve a happy ending too. *shakes fist*

*mops up*

Oww...owowowow! My head hurts from all the stupid. BZHAnne and PauletteW both fail horribly for not knowing what the hell they're talking about.

I need to go console myself with slash now.
