Don't stop wankawanka!
Apparently the Digimon fandom has decided, in some odd spurt of contrariness, that September is the month to wank more openly and publicly than usual. It starts innocently enough in the digimon community on lj with [info]tryxkittie's post asking for opinions in comparing each season of the dub and how others think it rates with other dubs. [info]ryosato starts the ball rolling by opening their comment with a statement that they hate the dub along with how much most dubs suck and that older ones are better (...). Okay! [info]ajora starts poking them for it and it gets really amusing really fast. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us), [info]ryosato had to go and post in their own damn community about how they're tired of being called an elitist blahblahblah and generally trying to make themselves look good (and failing). Small wank, but very rewarding in the amusement factor.

My friend and I were actually just discussing how wanky the Digimon fandom can be the other day. How oddly prophetic...

... I'm not sure whether I should be amused or ashamed; for the first time (I believe), something I'm semi-involved in has made fandom_wank.

At least I came off somewhat intelligently. I think. ;)

Yay mice!

ryosato seems to have a strange obsession with the capslock key. It is not obusive, but it is random. Just to check that s/he/it was complaining about editing out deaths in a show that in America is broadcasted towards children?

Yup. It's a kid's show. Some deaths were edited, but the majority of the important ones (i.e. have an impact far later in the stories) were not. The one she cited (Pumpmon and Gotsumon) were really more of an exception.

Ryosato is a huge notorious dub hater.

Besides, the Digimon dubs after season 1 were great. And 1 wasn't that bad, either. It had great acting at least, which is more than I can say for a lot of other shows.

I am more amused than anything that she seems to think that she stated her points clearly. Um ... in what universe? (And seriously, what was with the CAPSlock words? Were they really necessary? Some italics or bolds would have done the job, I'd say. But, oh no, we can't use conventional methods. It's the intarweb, after all.) And, of course, the blatant disregard for the fact that there are, in fact, many people who simply do not want to make LJ accounts for the sole purpose of replying to discussions; there are other journal sites, after all, and it's a shame that she doesn't appear to understand that maybe people don't want to make accounts they'll never use.

Though, I'm also amused that she seems to feel that her largely inflammatory first comment added much value to the conversation (if anything, her attitude is enough to turn people away from the original version of the show, in my opnion).

Ah well. Que sera sera.

I don't know how anyone can question the greatness of a dub that offered up the following sexually suggestive line from the mouth of a precociously evil (and whip carrying) 11-year-old Digimon Kaizer: "seeing you squirm is so delicious." THAT IS PERVERTED, TWISTED GENIUS.

A part of me just died trying to come to terms with Sailor Moon and Dragonball Z being examples of good dubbing.

I'm not sure what part since my sanity, sense of decency, empathy, sympathy, reason, logic, and morality are all long gone. I just know something's dead and I think it was important this time.

Ive always been of the opinion that as long as the originals exist, you can enjoy the raw, uncut versions all you want, while others who like dubs will enjoy that. Simple, yes?

But that would be applying earth logic to the neverending sub vrs dub wars. Silly me. I'll be over here, watching my english DBZ dub.

I love how [info]ryosato keeps making the point that censorship is bad and wrong, and then says: "Try censoring a book or movie and see how people react!"

Um. Movies get put on tv and are censored all the time. Stuff gets cut out. That's basically... the same thing as what happens with dubs. It gets aired with stuff cut, because for whatever reason, it isn't seen as appropriate for the timeslot/audience it's aimed at.

Sub elitists are are my absolute favourite sort of anime fandom wankers.

Boy, there really is three kinds of batshit crazy going on.

ELITIST isn't liking the sub more than the dub. That's PREFERENCE.

Being ELITIST is when you exort fans to "You can like your dub. You can enjoy it, even. Hell, I still watch the Sailor Moon dub sometimes (that's what got me into anime) and laugh. It's still got that kind of affectionate crappiness to it." while implying they're IDIOTS for doing so.

But if your ONLY defense of the dub is "I like it anyway" or "it's not so bad, stop whining", then you should just not bother opening your mouth. It's a pathetic defense. It's OKAY to like it, but you should at least admit that an EDITED dub is a sad, sad thing.

Opinion. Not a fact. And when you spew that opinion around and try to pass it off as fact? THAT is elitist.

I don't know, maybe it's just me. But there have been dozens of new anime to come out since Tenchi Muyo and Ranma. A lot of them have far superior dubs to even those shows. The American companies are starting to sit up and take notice to fans screaming about editing and changing things and getting people who can act as the voices.

2006-09-10 06:37 pm UTC (link)
Well, I hated all of the dubs, as I am an anime fan first and a Digimon fan second. I've been around far too long to watch dubs.

Wow, I was unaware that if you started to watch anime before it was on Fox Kids and Cartoon Network, you were not allowed to watch dubs. Crap, what will happen to my very old Tenchi Muyo dubs?! (In which, frankly, I liked Ryoko's voice better than the Japanese. She sounded all snarky. :D) Paradox! My VCR will explode!

...And what's this about the Sailor Moon dub getting better over time? It started out "pretty decent", in my opinion (despite some cut episodes, big deal), then in S they replaced most of the cast and Usagi/Serena sounded like, and I quote someone from a voice acting forum from back in the day, "somebody's grandmother trying to impersonate Goofy". (And this was before Kingdom Hearts, so no one thought Goofy was cool. :D) Got somewhat better in Super S, but yeesh. And once again we had a male character being switched to female. Which, again, wouldn't be a big deal, but they were so sloppy about it. We clearly saw his bare chest in one episode. :P

(I will not get into the wank about Michiru's dub voice being lower than Haruka's, because I have to give those two some real props for how well they did the episode where they found the talismans, which I was terrified they'd butcher after having seen the fansubs. They still made me tear up a little, just like the originals, so they win.)

Maybe I'm the minority here, but am I the only one who thinks that anyone who asks that whole "which season of the dub do you think is better?" question is just setting themself up for the infamous, "NEITHER! WHEN YOU TOUCH YOURSELF AT NIGHT, GOD CREATES AN ANIME DUB!!!!11" line? Not that I'm blaming [info]tryxkittie or anything like that, but hell, in a fandom more notoriously wanky than Digimon, one really should have expected that kind of response.

season 01 totally rocked so much more than anything else btw
