FMA wank, how I have missed thee.
Over at Anime News Network, someone points out that one drawing has been edited in the Viz's FMA Volume 8 manga. This was done WITH FULL APPROVAL FROM THE CREATOR.

To quote the first reply, "Cue the outcriers."

And they're off! The wank is growing, with lots of "OMG boycot Viz because of their editing" and "Well, time to start downloading the illegal scanlations" and "they just did this to placate the soccer moms" and such.

Ah, FMA wank. How we have missed thee.

Am I the only one who thinks creators don't give nearly as much of a shit as the fans do?

And please, the editing is not getting worse. It was worse back then. My friend had the extremely edited Dragon Ball manga while I had the newer release. I was telling her all about the pat-pats, Goku trying to sleep on Bulma's balls, and all the other dirty stuff and my friend had no idea what I was talking about.

You'd think with all the religious overtones in that series already that they wouldn't have a problem showing someone on a cross. Besides, it's not like Jesus was the only person ever crucified.

Seriously, I don't see the big deal. It's not like they're negating a whole scene or being hypocritical. They just edited out some minor symbolism OH NOEZ. If I had never seen the scanlations I'd never be the wiser.

Didn't they make that edit in the anime as well? My brother and I have been laughing at it for a while, anyway. See, our dad has a tendency to walk in while we're watching something, look for a minute, and see something vaguey cross-shaped, then make a remark about how it's symbolism. And he may be right sometimes, but I doubt that Platform One (from Doctor Who) is meant to be Christlike, or the werewolf from Tooth & Claw.

So now we tend to go on about symbolism every time someone stands with their arms stretched out.

Personally, I see no reason why people would wank on that. I mean, it's an edit that the CREATOR of the manga approved (and to be honest, the edit is a minor one).

No wonder I have no love for fandoms. They suck.

So, wait lemme get this straight.

The FMA movie, in which some beloved characters are depicted as Nazis, has been liscenced for distribution in the US and has gotten an un-cut limited release in theatres.

A panel of a villain being crucified in the manga gets an edit.

You know, nevermind that most people who were crucified in history were criminals--yannow, *bad guys.*

Really tho, I could care less about them adding rock to a rock, especially with the approval of the artist/creator person or persons. It makes me laugh that we (and by we I mean they) tiptoe around because we Might! offend Christians. Christians have a sense of humor too, right?

Right? Oh, damn.

I'm not pleased with the way Viz has been translating. In the latest official English version on the manga they suddenly up and decided to rename Yao Ling, Yao Lin and Jean Havoc, Jan Havoc -- this despite the fact that it has already been established how their names are spelled and Ling's name was DRAWN OUT in it's correct spelling in one of the panels.

Ya know, it's paying attention to these not so small small details that give the rest of the translation its credibility.

Proof of teh suck ass translating

I buy Viz manga only so I can have the books on hand... but that doesn't mean I like them much.

Especially with poor, poor InuYasha. What with Jyakotsu and Jyaken... and Naraku saying in one volume "That's why I sent Kagome to kill Kagome!". It's just too much when I think about Jean Havoc.

As for the edit- I didn't realize it was an edit, but then again, I don't get scanlations for FMA. *shrugs* I think the manga should be left the way it is (like Naruto's middle finger of FU-ness), but I doubt my opinion will change Viz's mind. :\

There's really nothing here to get uptight about here. The creator approved of the edit, and I think he's the one who truly has the right to get bent out of shape over it. It's HIS baby. I'm sure he could have also put it in the contract that he wanted it left unedited. That's what makes contracts beautiful things sometimes.

It sounds like it's not going to ruin the plot or leave a big gaping hole in the story. Honestly, I can somewhat understand Viz's concerns. They shouldn't have to worry about it, but that's just how things are. Some edits can be stupid and unnecessary, but other times, I can see why it happens. I may not like it, yet I don't go insane over it because I, at least, try to understand the reasoning.
