Recently, manga artist Mimei Sakamoto was quoted in an article in which she basically ripped the hell out of Japan's otaku subculture moe, which is apparently a fetish/love/attraction to certain things in anime, most commonly young, innocent girls. (Eh, just read the wiki and don't yell at me if I don't have this exactly right. I'm familiar with the term but not an expert.)

Over at Anime News Network's forums, people flip out. Responses to the article range from "I have a new hero" to "he intolerance from this lady is quite sad and it's magnified by her elitism and draconian definitions." There are some voices of reason in the mix, but there's also plenty of spooge.

Down over on the Hongfire forums, where one can help themselves to fanservice or outright hentai wanking material, there is a big kerfuffle over the ever controversial subject of Loli. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term, Loli is (broadly speaking) anime/manga pornography with very young females. Shota, is the male equivalent.

The Story? Last month, moderator Shragei posted that after much research, they had deduced that Lolicon was in violation of United States law. Seeing as I only poke around Hongfire for the random TypeMoon books, the occasional pretty CG, and am not a Loli fan, I didn't really give this much more than a passing glance. Unfortunately, this meant that I missed 13 pages of glorious spooge. Take a gander at some of the intraweb lawyering, the "omg u guyrs r sick for liking loli", and the "OMG there's nothing wrong with it stop persecuting me!", "this is great for breaking my obsessions with porn!", and "This is a dark day on Hongfire."

Then, two days ago, Para announced that the Loli gallery was reinstated because apparently it is legal. Naturally, everyone starts bickering again. There is weirdness about whether or not HF is hosted in Australia (where Loli is illegal) or the U.S, or (as they are actually hosted in the U.S.) if the owner (wo lives in Australia) should follow the rules of their home country, even though the server is elsewhere. More intraweb-lawyering, and somewhere around the end Ayunite and karenSP go at it. Geohound03 also gets his panties in a twist, saying that the mods shouldn't have made the mistake of removing it in the first place-- and if they wanted to remove it- they should have damn well left it removed!

Over on Anime News Network, they post an article about how Japan is thinking about expanding its child porn laws to include animated child porn . In the forum, two sides wank back and forth.

Freedom of speech, "lolicon promotes child abuse", lolicon != real child rape, statistics, morals, CAPSLOCK, definitions, accusations of people being close-minded/crazy/blind/fascist, and mention of Nazis are all here in these eight pages.

Over in pornish_pixies, ailei posts a pretty intense, extremely graphic chan/slash/incest/twincest porn story about the under-aged Weasley boys.

GAFF gets hold of it and the handwringing continues for four pages. There are uninformed discussions of the first amendment, plans to contact JKR's legal reps, accusations of unfit parenting, and a GAFF invasion of the story's comment pages.

UPDATE: biichan has learned that the GAFFers notified either JKR's people or LJ and the author has been ordered to remove the story.

Negima! is the latest manga series by Ken Akamatsu of Love Hina fame, and it's . . . not for everyone. The speculation begins back in November, before the series had been released over here.

Someone innocently asks whether anyone's heard of it and what they think of it.

Response is lukewarm to positive until Snoopy jumps in with "I say it's evil. It's like his old gangbang card captor sakura dojins revisited." Okay, fair enough, not everyone is going to like a vaguely romantic-comedy series starring a 9-year-old boy. The thread dies for a few days until someone asks again whether anyone knows anything about the series, and Snoopy immediately chimes in with "I'm curious as to whether or not you've been previleged enough to see his doujins. You know. The child porn ones."

Discussion of loli-con ensues, including people asking what it is and others trying to explain to them that it's not ACTUALLY child pornography. Snoopy disagrees, uh, kinda?

Oh come on. Loli-con is different from child porn in the same way that hentai is different from adult porn. The only two things that are different is that it's 'art' and that it's legal. And that's pretty much it.

And people always bring up the past because the past matters. When I heard he got married, I freaked out 'What if he has a KID...!?' If Negima hadn't been based on the love affairs of a 10 year old boy, then no, I never would have brought up his CCS hentai doujins. But being that Negima is about a preteen sex shop, yeah, I bring it up. And yes, I'm exagerating to prove a point.

So the ONLY difference is that no laws are being broken and no children are being hurt. That's not nearly enough, dammit! Also, Negima doesn't actually contain ANY sex or even canon romance involving the main character, but we'll say it does to prove a point!

For those of you who weren't aware of its existence, there was a once wonderful site known as F*CKIN Otaku", a place on the internet that served as a sort of refuge and sanctuary from the herd-following mentality, cold elitism and overall sheer stupidity that has infected the anime fandom and which only continues to grow into a giant puss-oozing, festering sore. It was a place where healthy, reality-grounded individuals who just happened to enjoy anime, who didn't worship Japan and everything related to it, could unite to form a community that promoted intelligent discussion and debate concerning all things anime and animated, free of the self-righteous, judgmental overtones and smug, pretentious air that permeates many other similarly-themed communities and forums.

idiotparade decides to rant about chan (underage sex) in [HP] fanfiction. From what I can tell of the long, convoluted ramble, she[?] only likes chan that she writes, and anyone else who writes it fails to include the consequences of said chan in their work. Not to mention she seems to have some difficulty in distinguishing "fantasy" from "reality".

A snippet:
Chan needs to deal with that lack of comprehension or understanding of what a child is doing. A lack of basic understanding about sex. Chan is about innocence and purity, in a way, but more it's about gullibility and developing sexuality. Or, it should be (Ed: You know, because creativity is bad. [/snide remark])[...]I can't think of a single chan fic off the top of my head that deals with the ramifications afterward, whether it's consensual or otherwise.

from spare_change: I don't think chan should be an "easy" subject, to read or to write, but I also don't think anybody should lecture me or you or anyone else about writing it.
