titti @ 11:28pm: Italian Parties - Oh the torture
I just got back from a FIRST COMMUNION! Yes, you read that right. So the party started at 5. There were about 130 invited.

5:30 Cocktail hour. All sea food you can imagine and more: oysters, clams, backed clams, mussles, shrimps, calamari, penne al salmone, linguine a le vongole, sea food salad. I swear it was more than a meal.
7:00 Appetizers
8:00 Pasta
9:15 Main course with salad, broccoli di rape and other stuff
10:30 Coffee and enough desserts to feed a whole school from cotton candy to lollipops to tiramisu
11:00 we finally leave.

And the music, OMG the music, we went from songs from before my mother was born to Madonna to Gloria Gaynor, all in 10 minutes, and everything loud, so very loud. Oh and did I mention I didn't know anyone. Yep, this is a friend of my husband and I knew no one, but yeah, classical Italian Americans who made a shit load of money in construction and a 5th grade education, and they were all like that, and they looked at me strangely because while their wives sat around and looked out for the kids, I sat around and wrote on my side kick. My kids are old enough that don't need supervision, thank you very much. They were shocked that I'd have a cell phone and chatted on it.

I'm ready to kill someone.

I'm also sure that there are things on my flist, but it's going have to wait until tomorrow, when the homicidal urges end.
lakme @ 10:26pm: Hello

I finally got a JF account!  Hurray!  I'll try to post here as much as I can, but it's finals week and as soon as that's over I plan on playing video games.  Lots and lots of video games.

atalantapendrag @ 9:51pm: Some observations
UK folks, I hope you appreciate how good Galaxy bars are. Milk chocolate that good is premium in the US.

When napping, a large and placid cat is a very good companion. Anya is big enough to be truly huggable (not only is she a plump kitty, she's got those big Maine Coon genes), and laid-back enough to put up with being hugged.

Mary Roach is an engaging writer, and her books are well suited to audiobook format as well. But the reader of the Spook audiobook put on this Apu-ish voice during the bit with an Indian doctor researching reincarnation... I was snickering and shaking my head.

Tomorrow will be A Day. In the morning, the exterminator is coming (not a special event; HACA sends a guy around to spray in the kitchen once a month). Then I'm off to MHMR to have a med check. And since I'll be out and about already, I'll do some erranding... I can take the bus to Best Buy on the way back and get a TV converter box, and depending on how peppy I feel after (and how heavy the converter is) stop at Target, HEB, or the corner store for some soda on the way home. If I go to Target I can also go to Popeye's. I haven't had Popeye's in literally years and I love their chicken.

...in July I'll have lived in solitude for five years. Five years of being a hermit crazy cat lady. I should commemorate the event somehow. Any suggestions?

loqia @ 12:39pm: Chainbreaker vs. Bookhabit: Round 2!

So, you thought you'd heard the last of Chainbreaker, did you!

Hah! Not hardly!

You remember Bookhabit? Well, Round 2 of the competition started today so once again Profile randomredux and I need your help. This round has a ranking system and, well, you can read about it here. But basically we need you to go here and click on the blue arrow next to Chainbreaker's name. That's it.

You can rank up to nine more books, if you want. I grabbed "Dance With the Devil" and Prisoner, too, because slash spec fic is my bag baby and because Profile maderr has been getting wank from other people over it.

We're currently #16 on the list. To make it through to the next round we need to be in the top 10 so… get voting people!

Oh, and you want some Urban Nordica themed junk like mouse mats, coasters, magnets and mugs? Well so did I. Lulz all round!

missm @ 7:07pm: Happy Mother's Day and Birthdays
I'm still not caught up on anything, but making a rushed post.

Happy Belated Birthdays to [info]sal101010, [info]xanphibian, [info]janedavitt, and [info]hobgoblinn, and just-in-time wishes for [info]binsoup and[info]lisanotmona. And a Happy Not-Quite-Belated Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

My family kept me busy today, taking me out to eat and to see Iron Man. I chose the movie and enjoyed it a lot, as did M:TNG-2. Mr. M gave it very modified praise. M:TNG-1 was very upset about the lack of accuracy in the setting. "Why did they do that to Afghanistan? I love Afghanistan." She then itemized the mistakes. We tried to point out that there was little hope of accuracy in a movie about a man stomping around in a big metal suit, but she wasn't consoled.

This reminded me of the time, years ago, when I took M:TNG-2 to see one of the Spy Kids movies. Afterward, she said that it wasn't very realistic. I agreed, and she added, "If that kid had really made a snap kick with his foot in that position, he would have broken all his toes." The wild fantasy elements didn't bother her, just the crappy martial arts moves.

Remember when Xander said, "Oh dear god, I'm the grownup who sees the world through my job?" My kids started doing that before they were old enough to have jobs.

Now I have to write a bunch of documents I said I'd have ready for work tomorrow. But I'm determined to fit in the latest Doctor Who episode. Tomorrow, more work and more exciting school events!

loqia @ 11:10am: Dee vs. Photography

Gee damn postage from the US seems to get faster every time I buy something.

[ image ]A few weeks ago I got this urge to go out and buy a compact-but-quality digital camera I could throw into my bag and pull out to take snaps when, like, the aliens invade. Or whatever. I've never really had a camera before (my phone is the closest I've got), so this was a new and exciting foray into consumer tech for me. It was also a difficult one; I know nothing about cameras and to someone who knows nothing about cameras, pretty much everything in the low-end consumer market is the same.

[ image ]In the end – after much speculation – I ordered a Canon PowerShot SD870 IS from B&H. It arrived the other day, and since then I've had way too much fun whipping it out and snapping pictures. Unfortunately, it only came with a 32 meg SD card, which is like 10 shots (what is this, the dark ages?), and the battery charger has a US power plug on it. So today it's out to look for a bigger card and a new charger (or at least a plug converter) because, damn, my batteries are flat already.

[ image ]Despite that, so far it's been pretty good. I'm a little disappointed at the macro function (one of the people I spoke to recommended an Olympus as the best for macro photography), and I'm still having to get used to the fact that it's better for me to use the zoom rather than stand three inches away from my subject a la the cameraphone, especially if there's a flash. I'm also amused that the facial recognition focus thing recognised Bizarro.

Anyway, my new-found interest in taking photos of random shit – mostly the garden and my cats – means I finally signed up to Flickr. The funnest thing? There's an iPhoto export plug-in, which means uploading is as easy as pressing Option-Shift-E.

Welcome to Web 2.0, Dee.

The rarest talent in any field is effort and organizational skill. Yes, it is even rarer than talent. Don't shit all over it.

notjo @ 8:21pm: Ties that Bind & Gag
Don's mother thought it would be terribly clever to email me and say "Gosh, let me give you both money" after Don already told her "No, we don't want money, thank you."

This, of course, has a history of Don's mother trying to manipulate and control him by giving/withholding money, which is kinda cruel to someone entirely on a fixed income who can't work and doesn't really qualify for much in terms of assistance anyway. We have income, we have savings, and now she wants to try and ingratiate us to her by giving us money.

*headdesk*

I told her that she needs to talk to Don about money, and that it was unfair to ask me to go behind Don's back that way, but what I really wanted to say was "BE MORE SUBTLE".

I somehow don't think talking to her via Macros is the best way to go here, but between her and my father deciding that he totally need to tell my entire extended family about my marriage before asking me, I'm thinking it may be the route to go.

Yeah, anyway. Ow, my head.

Also: *pimps [info]potc_feminists*

So, Happy Mother's Day, flist moms, and anyone on the flist who has ever had a mom!

I sent all this junk home (except the stuff I promised [info]frey_at_last and the home-recorded tapes). I've got two weeks to rescue anything from the sale if someone still wants.

Been mainlining DW S3, and enjoying it much more than S2.

Clearly there is something wrong with me, as I am not all a-squee about the XF promo videos. Sigh.

And Mom tried to set me up with the clerk at the thrift store yesterday. *glares, blushes, clings to internet*

Must off to forage, then watch Scrubs .. which was apparently the season finale last week? Hmm!

stele3 @ 2:26pm: How to Be A Fandom Jerk
This? Is why I left the Supernatural fandom.

I haven't talked about this before very much because I wanted to avoid kicking up a fuss, but apparently it's been coming up for other people, so... here is my response to vylit's post:

Yes. Just... yes. Reason numero uno that I left the SPN fandom.

It's one thing if there's sexism, homophobia, racism, and other prejudices in a source material. It's mainstream media (and the horror genre) - of course it has problematic issues w/r/t NOT-mainstream lifestyles/disabilites/identities/whatever. A big reason that fandom exists in its current form is because we take those flawed source materials and make them (potentially) less flawed. It doesn't always work: I don't think I need to point out the number of times that fandom has fucked things up worse than any source material. But a lot of the time, fandom is a place where we can discuss problematic characterization, plot points, and the like.

When THAT becomes suppressed... well, then that's even more fucked up. We should not be afraid to criticize our media, people, nor should we make other fans feel bad about doing so.

Also? I just love this reply to that "How To" post: Wow, victim mentality much?

To which I respond: Wow, entitled mentality much?

shadowkitty @ 10:05pm: TV stuff
Wow, Temple of Doom really doesn't hold up as well as the other two Indiana Jones films now I'm a grown up. That's saddening :( Mind you, my latent crush on Harrison Ford is back in full force.

Loved last night's Doctor Who. Absolutely loved it. I'm a complete sucker for characters like Jenny. Series four is brilliant so far.

Think I'm going to give up Supernatural apart from the cracky episodes. It's not worth it. I don't even really like the Winchesters and they keep chucking out the minor characters I do like.

AUGH I fail at life. Or my head does. An epic migraine these past few days has prevented me from posting the last part of my story in a timely manner. :\ I will have the last part today, I hope.

Hey, so who watched Shia LaBeouf on SNL last night?

Why do I not have Shia icons? I again fail at life. )

morgandawn @ 12:17pm: Rising Food Prices
If you grow from seeds, suburban gardening can - in some cases - be a cost effective solution to rising food prices. Suburban Gardening
Most suburban areas (and some cities) will also allow you to raise a few chickens. While this is very pricey, you can do the same with some wood + chicken wire and a fenced in area or yard.

Note that after factoring in your labor costs it may make more sense to grab a part-time/weekend job to raise extra income to pay for rising food costs - but if you live in an area where there is no work/extra work, then growing your own food is another option.

And remember they weren't called Victory Gardens for just any reason.  Cuba has had similar urban gardens for decades. Many local areas in the US have something similar where you can get free seeds.
j_crew_guy @ 1:27pm: Top Chef slash?
Is it out there? Specifically from this season, with Spike/Andrew? Ever since the "Block Party" challenge episode, where they were the red team... yeah.
threegoldfish @ 2:06pm: Adventures in home owning
So it's not a foundation issue. YAYAYAYAY! However, I do get to pull down at least one sheet of drywall, all of the insulation, caulk up a probable siding leak, rent a concrete chipper to bevel a ledge outside (and have to get my neighbor to go along with this) and then once it's all plugged up, replace the insulation and the drywall. Oh, and then the carpet and the probably ruined baseboards. I also need to move the 125 with the goldfish somewhere in there.
