The National Theatre refuses to condone bootleg recordings of its plays... OMGPERSECUTION!

[info]kumquat_of_doom
Moved from [info]clairvoyantwank on grounds of extra wanking and journal bahleetion. Also, because people asked me to.

Context: the National Theatre is one of the UK's most major theatre companies, and one of its most popular (and critically-acclaimed) productions of the last few years was Danny Boyle's version of Frankenstein, which starred Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. In light of the play's popularity (I believe every single night sold out), the NT put on a cinema production of the play, which has so far had an unprecedented TWO runs. There have been rumours in fandom that there'll be a DVD of the play, rumours which were completely scotched a few months back -- basically because the cast said no.

Anyway, thwarted fans = much kerfuffling, and bootleg recordings have been (predictably enough) doing the rounds in fandom -- I know for a fact that there's one of JLM as the Creature, though I don't believe there's one of Cumberbatch in the same role. (Unfortunately.)

SO, naturally, one such thwarted fan, [info]hikarikame, takes it upon herself to write to the NT themselves, asking them to condone aforesaid bootlegs. What she hoped to accomplish I really don't know, but she appears to have been, shall we say, somewhat miffed when the NT was, er, less than enthusiastic about the idea of supporting pirate versions of its own copyrighted material.

I suspected she'd be even less happy when she read her own fandom's reaction to all of this... I turned out to be right! LOTS of passive-aggressive happening, all over the map, as people attempted to bring common sense to bear on the issue. [info]hikarikame has now deleted her journal AND her Tumblr; I have screencaps of her post in Cumberbatchfans, but not of her Tumblr.

Queer as Folk fandom is alive and strong (when there's wank involved).

[info]knowsall

As with most television fandoms, once a show is over and finished, there are people from fandom who move on. It's much like having a gift that you love for several years but you have to return it after that set period of years. You return all the Good Fic, all the fun show discussions and conversations, and wonderful graphics. After the show, several years after the show, fandom becomes extremely watered down into Bad Fic, discussions that are repetitive, and more bad graphics than good graphics.

People take offense to this analysis. Here's where the wank comes in.

Wank 1 - March 6, 2011 )

You'd think that it'd end there but it didn't. People were fighting and arguing and would continue to do so until this, the last comment in the shot. That's a mod and up until now, everything's been about badfic. Then, shit got personal:

Personal wank that got comments deleted. )

That was really the calm before the storm.

Wank 2 - March 15, 2011 )

She wants the mods to take down her post so that she can alter history and pretend that none of it happened. Um, sorry. Wank doesn't work that way. It gets saved and posted on [info]fandom_wank.

Summary: badfic is badfic and not art, [info]petulant2u is the crusader for all badfic everywhere (including her own), mods at [info]getithere will ban you if you troll the place, people who are butt hurt will publicly cry in their journals to their friends list who will always defend their idiocy, and Queer as Folk continues to be a fandom that has to hunt for any kind of quality fic. Tragic but true. Kudos to the mods for leaving the wank up!

Edit: Screenshots to her Twitter and locked posts to come!

The internet does not forget!

[info]bubosquared

So it seems our dear, dear friend, [info]liberty_stewart, has finally figured out how to delete posts. Sadly, she has yet to figure out how to delete screencaps off others's computers.

Well, sadly for her, but lucky for us!

OMG! Oh Noes!

[info]jetamors
Grabbed from [info]wank_report.

So toft reveals that she's been interspersing her real requests for fics on sgastoryfinders with fake requests. Some of the "fake" fics actually did turn out to exist, and were found.

Is this hilarious or horrifying? Either way, there's tons of wank in the comments.

2ch used Deport!

[info]gusty
Pokebeach is a Pokemon fansite whose webmaster, Water Pokemon Master (hereby known as WPM), is currently living in Japan in order to cover news about the upcoming 5th generation of Pokemon.

This week the 13th movie in the series came out, featuring advertisements that revealed two new Pokemon. WPM took photographs of these new Pokemon during this showing and posted them to Pokebeach. Filming a movie in a theater is a serious offense in Japan, and members of the Japanese site 2chan were enraged at WPM's actions. They reported him to the Japanese police and are encouraging others to do so. WPM could face an $11,000 fine and deportation.

Bulbagarden, another Pokemon fansite, reported on the incident, with the note that: "After learning of Water Pokémon Master's act, many people, such as several of the administrators of Bulbagarden, have condemned WPM's actions." This is where the wank comes in. A post about the news story was posted in the Bulbagarden forums ETA: Now deleted. A couple pages into this post, a copy of WPM's response to the affair is shared in which he lashes out at Bulbagarden for condeming him:

If anyone should pay a fine, it should be Pokemon and Nintendo to its loyal webmasters who have spent years out of their time and wallets promoting their products. )

This results in a back-and-forth between Bulbagarden staff and forum users on whether they're hypocritical for their opinion on WPM's actions considering they reguarly post leaked CoroCoro scans:

TTEchidna: "We weren't the ones who took the scans. As a news organization, what we're doing is no more illegal than a TV channel showing video of a murder."

WPM then posts a conversation on AIM between himself and the Bulbagarden staff on Pokebeach, and this is also posted by Sparrow on the Bulbagarden forums:

I hope you know that until charges are pressed against me, your news story is stupid )

Before the deletion (after I made this post) there was 29 pages about the situation on the Bulbagarden forums. Supposedly there's more wank on the Pokebeach forums, but my work blocks that website (hence why I used the Bulbagarden forum quotes of what has been posted on Pokebeach rather than the site itself, apologies). If anyone has a link to that, it'd be appreciated!

ETA: Lots of caps here thanks to [info]galateus!

♫ My my my my Mitchell ♫

tetradecimal
Brought to you by wank_report!

Clan Mitchell is a Dreamwidth community revolving around the fictional Mitchell family, which appears to be a huge group of people who live in the Carolinas under the administration of a matriarch named Momma, generally serve in some branch of the U.S. military, and/or operate under a general curtain of good ol' American values, get-well-pies, and care packages.

Motto: "The Mitchells will inherit the earth: the meek don't move fast enough."

From the profile:
"So ivorygates and synecdochic made up a bunch of crazy Southern relatives, and the "Fuck Canon, Fanon Makes More Sense, Dammit" club (meetings on alternate Tuesdays, free t-shirts at the recruiting tables, bring your own beer but the cookies are free) firmly believes that "Kansas, my ass" is the best way to approach Cameron Mitchell's home life, and, well, there should be more fic about these people!

Not necessarily a shared-continuity set of stories -- use as much or as little as you'd like -- but a shared-character-list and a place for people to build a shared-world. Grab a Mitchell and start writing. Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated. And probably baked for."

It all starts with a ficprompt... )
ETA: Revenge of the Sith: cap including the offending fic.

Holy ETA, Batman: (thanks, mousie)
"When someone has put in a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to create an absolutely beautiful sandbox to play in (a sandbox that they love very very much), and then not only allows you to come in and play in their sandbox, but graciously opens the door and INVITES you in, you don't shit in the sandbox. You don't. M'kay? Good."

We can't stop here, this is ETA country: It's time for the public address roll, looks like. From [info]eilan:
* slybrarian calls for fair and balanced.
* quinfirefrorefiddle & co. are appalled at F_W's lack of journalistic integrity.
* Synecdochic's state of the union, and also ivorygates is banned. Or left. Either way, she's not a mod any more.

Second verse, same as the first: Katherine Kerr hates your fanfic.

[info]knitmeapony
Katherine Kerr, editor of Weird Tales of Shakespeare and author of Celtic myth and Dungeons and Dragons 'inspired' novels decides to create another derivative work: her thoughts on yaoi.

A number of people on LJ have been expressing their views on fanfic, so I thought I'd add mine. I despise it.

http://aberwyn.livejournal.com/181755.html Deleted!

Caps of first post:
via alchemynerd on LJ: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7ovake
via alchemynerd on LJ: http://www.sendspace.com/file/nsjfzd
Perhaps you'd prefer PDF: http://knitmeapony.com/fw/kerr_kerfuffle_page1.pdf
Or HTML, via maneman on LJ: knitmeapony.com/fw/katherine_kerr_career_suicide.html

And this includes the professional transformative works:

If someone can think of no better idea than to take a classic kid's book series and try to wring a few more bucks out of it, like the whole 'Wicked' series, then they should get a real job.

Comment #2 is fellow author Jim Hines getting a bit snarky with the idea. She backpedals mightily in the face of a professional author.

There are disappointed fans! She replies to her own post rather than editing it!

Not to mention mocking, accusations of trolling, and weird discussions of how fanfic is like embroidery or other crafting.

First post deleted, with explanation: Because people got "offensive": http://aberwyn.livejournal.com/182244.html Also deleted, cap of this, courtesy of [info]zulu http://tinypic.com/r/akzz1d/5

Then there was a third post, which I missed entirely, dubiously titled "what's wrong with talking about quality?" Cap, courtesy of [info]woodenleg http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/5620/swrongwithtalkingaboutq.png

And when the second and third posts were deleted, a martyrish post went up here: http://aberwyn.livejournal.com/182619.html

Lordy, yet another post, preserved below. Edit: Post deleted, but thankfully preserved.

And one (final?) post, this time with comments turned off:

Summing up
1. 3 or 4 of the posts in the mobbing stage were interesting and intelligent; they made a nicely reasoned defence of fanfic. Good for you! You might have changed my mind if it weren't for the others.

2. The rest of the 200 or so posts actually proved my points about poor writing skills, lack of cultural knowledge, and lack of imagination, since they repeated each other's thoughts in varying degrees of inarticulate language. One person, in a post I screened by disallowed, even used a toilet reference that was supposed to embarrass me. He also seemed to think I'm man, oddly enough.

3. A sloppy syllogism for those who didn't get the B'rer Rabbit point:
A. I dislike fanfic and don't want anyone writing it about my work.
B. If you don't read my work, you can't write about it.
C. Therefore threatening to ignore my work does not injure me in any way. Rather, I'm relieved that you won't.

4. The mobbing was not merely rude to me. We can agree on the point that the flip tone of my original post deserved the response it got. However, the mobbing was rude to all the regular readers of this space. It bored them, it cut off their right of discussion, and I suspect it convinced some of them that my original post's opinion of fanfic writers was in the main correct.

Personally, I think this fanfic of the Diana Gabaldon kerfuffle has a paucity of imagination. And relatively dull.

I now pronounce your Pokeman and Wife

[info]xelloss
[info]marikocure has a dream, that one day man and pokeman will live in peace and know one another. Biblically.

She wants to know, more specifically, how the rest of the Pokemon community thinks pokemon would feel about a man/mon match. She doesn't find that answer, but rather, how a lot of the community feel about it.

Hilarityensues.

Someone compares pokeality to homosexuality. Not funny, d00ds.

Sadly no one brings up the fact that a pokemaster and his darling Victreebel would be in an inherent BDSM relationship. But there are still more lulz to be had.

EDIT: They deleted it, but I have PRESERVED IT FOR POSTERITY.

Twicon Final Fail!

[info]darth_buttocks
I've revised the post with screen caps now that the Partners have shut down the Ning site. I've saved as much of the Becky Scoggins Thread as I could and you can find all of it here

Not that it is that surprising, but Twicon has canceled both it's shows. With a big announcement on it's website:

In hind sight, it was pretty obvious things were going downhill for these guys. In February, they had to move their Toronto show to Ottawa due to the G20 Conference happening that weekend. This set off a flurry of cancellations and some grumblings on the message board about the Partners dragging their feet on refunds

There is confusion on the forum, especially about how they get refunds since the announcement didn't bother to mention how you go about this. Becky Scoggins, one of the Twilight Partners, posts a personal apology that states it's not an official statement from Twicon. Noneya calls bullshit on Becky's apology pointing out the discrepancies in her statements and her post gets deleted . Some people notice this , but Becky is claiming the threads were deleted by the users.

Later we have the second Twicon Partner Bailey Gauthier responding. And she's saying she doesn't know what's happened either!

The Wednesday after the closing announcement, the letters got sent out, and it was a simple form letter telling people to send their claims with appropriate paperwork to an address and nothing more. A week after that the forum got shut down and all that's left are the screen caps.

Meanwhile, a mousie has informed me that Becky is already hard at work on another Twilight fandom event! No wank just yet, and you can read about it over at Clairvoyant Wank

THIS IS A BEAR-LEVEL THREAT HERE!

[info]hypno_jango
Hetalia is a manga/anime series that stars anthropomorphizations of different countries. Stephen Colbert is America (And So Can You). rover_09 posts that "her friend" posted a fanart to the Stephen Colbert forums. Most would think it means it's yet another silly fanart of America and Colbert standing in front of the American flag being America. But to everyone's horror, it's a Colbert/America/Bandit Keith three-way.

The whole community: TAKE THAT DOWN NOW! *FAIL GIFS*

rover_09 reminds the community about "her friend".

Edit:

I am not endorsing this. I put this up because she sent it to me and I wanted to see what others thought of it. You want to yell at someone, go talk to her.

Once upon a time

[info]sisterelwood
Snagged from [info]wank_report with some edits by yours truly.

In the land of the internets, there was a community called [info]house_cuddy. For four years the denizens played and frolicked. Sunshine and lollipops ruled the day and unicorns ran free.

And then shit got real...

It all started on January 29, 2010, when someone spammed all over LJ House-related communities for merchandise from a Russian website. Most places ignored it but [info]house_cuddy fed the troll with added anti-Russia wank for extra measure. Mod, lissiePissie, deletes the spam and in the afternoon announces that things have been so wanky that she's put the comm on moderated status.

Nothing could possibly go wrong with that, right? Right?

Oh nay- within a few hours, that post is deleted and fellow mod fishingvegas announces that he has kicked out lissiepissie and will be taking over.

Fanart: Serious business. Shipping: EVEN MORE SERIOUS.

[info]lady_ganesh
From a mouse on [info]wank_report and using some of their language.

[info]copper_cakes uses a picture as her Livejournal background of the Bleach pairing Ulquiorra/Orihime. Unfortunately, it was a commission, and the artist and the person who paid for the art let her know. She takes down the image, and apologizes for using it and causing them trouble here.

Sounds straightforward, right? But you forget: this is Bleach and Bleach is serious fucking business. Not only is stealing wrong, [info]copper_cakes is a LYING LIAR who only really ships Ichigo/Orihime!

No, really. )

Small, but tasty in its utter detachment from any sense of perspective.

EDIT: Yes, you've seen Yulieana before.

EDIT THE SECOND: Yulieana...um. Responds, I guess?

EDIT THE THIRD: Moar caps! Were people actually buying wedding dresses? Spill the details, folks! EDIT THE FOURTH: This may be an exaggeration. BUT IF YOU HAVE BLEACH WEDDING DRESS ART, PUT IT IN COMMENTS, I'm bored and LJ is slow today. Bonuses for boys in dresses.

EDIT THE FOURTH (NO, WAIT, THE FIFTH): Where are my wedding dresses, bitches? Yulieana compares [info]fandom_wank to Fox News (can I be Shepherd Smith?), some girl I don't know to infamous lawyer "Jake" Thompson, and takes a sideswipe at Johnny Yong Bosch. Dude, dissing the Black Ranger? So not on. Get it before it's locked!

EDIT SIX: Thanks for the wedding dresses! Oh, and neutrality is simply impossible when it comes to Bleach ships.

DON'T. TELL. CHIIBIUSA. TO. CALM. DOWN.

tetradecimal
C&P'd from wank_report:

"The original post was deleted, but there's caps a'plenty at sf_drama. These are probably the most complete: http://pics.livejournal.com/halrenna/pic/000e0zr0

So. chiibiusa, co-mod of sm_secrets, announces in sailormoonfans that she's thinking of shutting down the comm (at least temporarily, but possibly for good), because there aren't enough secrets being submitted, and she's tired of it. The first commenter, tenchichan, suggests that chiibiusa needs to calm down.

DON'T. TELL. CHIIBIUSA. TO. CALM. DOWN.

Cue raeg, increasingly incoherent responses, a small amount of "OMG don't leave us we love you!" fangirling, and some sighs from people who thought their comm had outgrown this shit.

Then the whole thing hits sf_drama: http://community.livejournal.com/sf_drama/2556609.html?page=1#comments

Bringing chiibiusa with it: http://community.livejournal.com/sf_drama/2556609.html?thread=404234945#t404234945

She is STILL replying to comments left on the sf_d post, as well as randomly friending comm members. There are rumors of a post waiting in the sf_d mod queue, presumably telling us all how gullible we are for falling for her trolling, and how we've all been lol!pwnd! There's been a few comments from people who claim to know her and say that this is really unlike her, so it's possible that this is all leading up to the classic "I GOT HACKED!" defense."

ETA! Chiibiusa flounces: "i amno longer updating this journal from now until ever. and 'ever' is subjective is until i am ready to open it back up again."

Aptly, she's back for more. I guess in the recession, the exchange rate for 'ever' is approximately 45 minutes.

Say you're a member of ontd_ai and you're getting a bit tired of the fanfic posts, the idol appreciation posts, the way a particular mod runs things, and anything else you feel doesn't fit the ~true spirit~ of the community. There's only one thing to do!

Start a super-secret elite comm where you and 26 of your friends (including some ontd_ai mods) can plan the upheaval of the 5000-member community, including abrupt fanfic banning and gif trolling of appreciation posts and anyone who objects, or course!

This involved heavily trolling an appreciation post for Megan, one of the AI competitors from the latest season, with gifs and insults. EDIT2: Found it! There are pockets of drama all over the place, but the big stuff is on page six here.

In the Grim Dark reaches of the Internet, there is only Stupid.

[info]galateus

It's amazing that Warhammer 40000 fandom hasn't wanked its way here before now. But here it is!

It all started when someone on a bizarre conspiracy theory site makes a play to become the next BADD (see also: Dark Dungeons), by writing the article "Space Marines - Death Toys" about the super-soldiers from Warhammer 40k. It lays bare Games Workshop's nefarious plot to brainwash our children for the coming of the New World Order.

Welcome aboard the Torchtanic!

[info]wallflower
(Be warned: long wank report is LONG. Continuation of this [info]clairvoyantwank post. ETAs are under the third cut.)

This weekend, Torchwood fans flocked to Chicago for TorchSong, a John Barrowman-centric convention with a website that looks like it was modeled after a Geocities page circa 1997, a half-assed commercial that aired on BBC America, and some awfully expensive tickets.

When the con was first announced, the only guests were John, his sister Carole, and Mark Sheppard. When people started emailing the organizers about possible other guests, they were emphatically told while more guests would be coming, there would be no other Torchwood guests because it was a John Barrowman event, not a Torchwood event.

Ticket sales apparently convinced them this was not a good strategy, so over the following months they added Kai Owen, Tom Price, and Gareth David Lloyd. Fans squeed, and despite being not particularly impressed with the organizers' behavior, they willingly plonked down as much as $500 to see John and friends and to see John perform. (Later, 'special' auction packages went for up to $1,410.)

Then things start to go wrong.

On Wednesday, Kai Owen was forced to drop out due to a family emergency. Thursday, the day before the con began, they announced that John Barrowman had torn ligaments in his ankle and he would not be attending.

Aaaaand we're off.

[info]snacky
Just a little wank over how MEAN it is to give unsolicited (for, um, a certain definition of "unsolicited"), anonymous concrit.

Welcome, friends, to
THE ANONYMOUS WRITING FEEDBACK MEME

It's one of those memes where people post their names and other people comment anonymously, in this case, telling what they think of their writing.

Let's look at the rules, shall we?

1. If you’re a writer, comment to this post with your username.
2. Commenters, no drama please. Play like adults. And writers, be prepared for any comment.
3. Pimp the meme out by posting the above code into your journal.
4. Be honest.

(emphasis mine!)

So, we're clear on how this works, right? Writers put their names in themselves, voluntarily. They should expect any kind of feedback, and it will be honest. And as long as there is no drama, any kind of comment is allowed.

Unfortunately, not everyone is prepared for anonymous comments or honesty... )
