The National Theatre refuses to condone bootleg recordings of its plays... OMGPERSECUTION!

[info]kumquat_of_doom
Moved from [info]clairvoyantwank on grounds of extra wanking and journal bahleetion. Also, because people asked me to.

Context: the National Theatre is one of the UK's most major theatre companies, and one of its most popular (and critically-acclaimed) productions of the last few years was Danny Boyle's version of Frankenstein, which starred Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. In light of the play's popularity (I believe every single night sold out), the NT put on a cinema production of the play, which has so far had an unprecedented TWO runs. There have been rumours in fandom that there'll be a DVD of the play, rumours which were completely scotched a few months back -- basically because the cast said no.

Anyway, thwarted fans = much kerfuffling, and bootleg recordings have been (predictably enough) doing the rounds in fandom -- I know for a fact that there's one of JLM as the Creature, though I don't believe there's one of Cumberbatch in the same role. (Unfortunately.)

SO, naturally, one such thwarted fan, [info]hikarikame, takes it upon herself to write to the NT themselves, asking them to condone aforesaid bootlegs. What she hoped to accomplish I really don't know, but she appears to have been, shall we say, somewhat miffed when the NT was, er, less than enthusiastic about the idea of supporting pirate versions of its own copyrighted material.

I suspected she'd be even less happy when she read her own fandom's reaction to all of this... I turned out to be right! LOTS of passive-aggressive happening, all over the map, as people attempted to bring common sense to bear on the issue. [info]hikarikame has now deleted her journal AND her Tumblr; I have screencaps of her post in Cumberbatchfans, but not of her Tumblr.

'I am more than disappointed, I am angry'

[info]melannen
I recently went to visit the Boston area, and specifically to visit the $1-used-book shelves at Brattle Books, and there I picked up a copy of "Edgar Rice Burroughs Quarterly, vol 1., no. 1, Fall, 1982". Because who wouldn't? (You may know of ERB fandom from things such as Tarzan and the John Carter of Mars books. It has a history almost as long and excellent as ACD fandom, with which it often crossed over.)

What I didn't realize until I got it home is that it contained a bonus: a beautiful example of pristine, vintage, excellent fan history, in the form of an impressively wank-filled open letter sent from the editor to all of his subscribers.

I reproduce it here, unaltered and in full, for your delectation:

Trouble has been brewing ever since publication of V.I, No.1. )

*fans self* Wank was just so much classier back then.

(There is more to this story - McWhorter eventually managed to start an ERB journal that lasted more than one issue, so there must be - but I think I shall just leave this letter as is, as its own shining jewel.)

Welcome to the Wank Parade

[info]ari_o
nicked from the very long comment at [info]wank_report, with thanks to the mouse.

Bandom darlings My Chemical Romance broke up according to their website. Their drummer Bob Bryar has left the band. People leave bands all the time, but that never stops people from pouring dirt on their heads, or beating their breasts, or making long bitchy comments on livejournal.

There is a post in [info]chemicalromance. It's mostly variations of SADFACE and OMG HOW WILL I STUDY FOR MIDTERMS NOW? Peppered by the occasional WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU ASSHOLES? THEY OWE YOU NOTHING. Rinse. Blather. Repeat.

Until [info]inkandchaos goes a little dipsydoodle:

Yulieana, the one-woman wanking machine from the Bleach fandom!

[info]ladyofviolets
Thank you, kind mousey from wank_report!

Crystaldawn doesn't think that IchiHime shippers are so bad. So she writes an essay about it, debunking some of the "myths" about them... (Thanks for the exact link, mariem_1)

Yulieana (from these wanks) finds out. And she is not happy AT ALL.

Feminism is not about celebrating and encouraging women! Bullies must only be dealt with through hitting them back! A True Woman should NEVER EVER become a teacher! And samurais do not belong in Bleach. That's what Yulieana says, after all.

And as a bonus, Fandom Secrets seems to have some things to say about her...

ETA: Aaaand she saw us. Now WE are the stalkers, the bad "feminists" and the wankers, according to her and Co.. =D

ETA 2: "I wrote an eleven page essay in reply to yours!" "And I think you're such a BITCH for not fucking replying to her on it! Not from Yulie herself, but still damn wanky.

ETA 3: Why ship wars are awesome! IDK MY NOT BFF YULIE? Thanks, lady_ganesh!

ETA 4: And the whining bout CD's essay FINALLY reaches Bleachness

How do you like hat?

tetradecimal
We ask, and wank_report provides.

Team Fortress 2 is an online FPS game in which two teams made up of nine different classes attempt to blast each other into comical bloody oblivion. TV Tropes says it best:

"Two corporations erect fortresses 10 yards from each other and then send waves of men to kill each other to steal a briefcase out of the opposing fort's basement."

Now add hats, equipable items that were introduced earlier in the year that change the appearance of a character and serve no other purpose whatsoever. But they're rare drops, man -- you could be on for hours and not see hide nor hair of a precious, precious hat.

Do you smell what The Rock is cooking? )
In conclusion: hats!

The Russet Doom Saga, Part II

[info]caito
For those just tuning in:

Lady Sybilla wanted to put out Russet Noon, her tribute sequel to the Twilight Saga via sockpuppet publisher. Smeyer never drew her characters, so this totally wasn't copyright infringement. She put out press releases, a Youtube reading, and listed her book on eBay months and months before she intended to make it available.

Then, of course, the "massive hate campaign" began. Darn Earth logic!

I myself wrote no less than four separate versions of a wank report, as I tried to keep on top of everything (and eventually lost my grip on sanity).

Lady Sybilla did not take this well. She pretend-banned the russet-noon site, taking down its former glory, then changed it to goad voyeurs.

And what did I get for my efforts? Emails from Lady Sybs herself.

Now she's put up a message directing us to the interview she did at a Brazilian fan site.

In the words of Stephenie Meyer, "When a story demands to be written, there's no way to resist."

Yes, Sybsy baby, and your story demands to be put down. Um, I mean the reports on you, not Russet Noon. Your tomfoolery must be chronicled for posterity the lulz.

But wait, there's more! Aaaaaaand she's back to writing press releases. It's the Foforks interview with this blurb at the end:
AV Paranormal Publishing is an independent publisher in the Los Angeles area. We publish online books, digital art and paperback novels. No unsolicited manuscript submissions are considered. We accept query emails with a short synopsis. Email your queries to submissions@avparanormal.com
O rly? Also the Twilight Lexicon is back to smacking her down. Kisses, kids!

And guess what just came up in my Google reader? This post by Karen Knows Best! Which led me to go and check...yes! Lee Goldberg is back on the case!

Now for the tl;dr... )
In other news, I'm totally over this email business. I have a spam filter and I intend to use it. If someone wants to continue discussing this shiz, she can do so in the comments like everybody else.
ETA: Yes, we can haz more press release.

Slash fans? That's sick! TPTB says so.

[info]ryuutchi
I come bearing fresh Supernatural wank, because I'm sure none of you are tired of it by now.

A little background: The most recent episode, entitled "The Monster at the End of This Book", was pretty much "A Very Meta Supernatural". It involved Spoilers, and lots of juicy crazy follow herein )

PokéWank, Part II!

[info]harrylovesron
This is a followup to the PokéWank I posted a while ago.

As expected, efforts to try and convince The Pokémon Company to keep the English dub's voice actors (who were replaced when 4Kids lost their rights to produce the dub) have failed. Today a 10th anniversary special, "Master of the Mirage Pokémon", was aired on Kids WB, showcasing the new VAs.

Of course, Pokéfen are mad as hell about it! There's a bitty wank on the pokemaniacs community here, but the spooge has been flying fastest on Serebii.net's forums. Here's the thread discussing it, and a sampling of comments can be found below.

POKEMON IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. )

And those were just from the first 7 pages of the 27-page (at the moment) thread. *g*

If anybody's curious as to the sound of some of the new voices, a clip's been put up on YouTube.

ETA: I just stumbled across a Save the VAs LJ community. According to a post in it, the new VAs have been contracted for season 10, so there's not much that can be done about that. Also, apparently a big reason the VAs were changed in the first place is because The Pokémon Company et al got the mistaken impression that it was what the fans wanted, because 4Kids is so wildly unpopular with so many people. However, fen just wanted the stupid dialogue/editing to be done away with, not the VAs.

I know a lot of y'all in the comments are sympathizing with the wankers, and I totally understand, but the new voices aren't _that_ bad. The old VAs sucked when they first had the roles, too.

ETA 2: Another clip from YouTube; this one has Brock, May, and Max in it. OK, I'm really starting to sympathize with the wankers a little. Brock's voice is just... *shudder* His is hands down the worst of the lot.

Is this wanky?

[info]mynxkittie
I'm not sure. But it boggled my mind, anyway.
