It all started with a Big Bang

[info]harumph
NB: This writeup was taken from a very helpful mousie who volunteered to update the original report, I've just updated the HTML.

Our tale begins with the launch of BBP, a publishing house based on a totally new model that no one has ever tried before ever ever ever: Publishing popular fanfic authors' original novels. The first step on this journey is a Kickstarter, set up to fund the first three of these novels. Not the press, mind you, because that would be against Kickstarter TOS; just the novels themselves.

Which goes over fine - the authors involved are Gyzym, Febricant, and Eleveninches, so anticipation runs high - until someone notices the $40,000 price tag and starts to ask questions. The answers are not especially satisfying.

Others begin to dig deeper into the BBP team's backgrounds. Turns out, nobody associated seems to be all that qualified for their gig, most notably their "recovering law-type person," who's experience seems to consist of a year or so of paralegaling it up. This is kind of important, given that BBP's assurance that the novels will be finished is riding on their 'legally-binding contracts.'

Yep, you read that right. The novels aren't complete yet. But they will be!

Further questions are asked. Further answers are not really given. "Details? Noooo, you don't want details, details are boring! Look at the shiny!"

And then there's the part where one of the $500 backer rewards is the completion of a WIP by Gyzym. Meaning fanfic is being offered for straight-up monetary gain here, no charity auction in sight. Which Aja - did I mention the part where Aja is the Submissions Editor for BBP? - then starts a pool for, in the hopes of getting another Inception fic out of all this.

The latest is a twitter campaign on the part of BBP to get exposure through celebrity retweets. So far, they've had success with Orlando Jones, and are now going after Amanda Palmer. Their attempt to go for Maureen Johnson backfires, however.

The authors all post links leading back to the kickstarter in their fanfictions on AO3, breaking the community's restrictions against advertising in fics-- a reporting campaign on FFA begins and the notes are taken down shortly after, but that it was done at all leads Franzeska to make a post denouncing them.

We've got several continuous ffa threads and counting, and a lot of passive-aggressive twittering to contend with, if you're into that kind of thing.

At one point Aja heroically posts unanon on ffa to play the martyr and completely miss the point let everyone know she totally isn't involved with BBP anymore but completely believes in the project.

Some further links of note: some pointed questions directed at Big Bang Press, which are deflected

People with small press experience point out that, among other things, BBP is promising an impossible timeline

Discussion starts on Absolute Write

Big Bang Press continues to deflect questions.

Febricant and Morgan Davis do a podcast, in which they explicitly refer to the fanfiction available in their reward tiers:

"I think the (reward level) we may actually get some traction with is Kady's Work in Progress folder. Which, is like, somewhere between 200 and 300 thousand words' worth of unfinished pieces of fanfiction in a PDF -- with like, annotations, um, of her explaining where the story was going to go. [...] There's a lot of stuff in there, like, massive quantities of stuff. So, um, if you want to give us a lot of money, uh, that (reward level) would be a good option."

In which Aja demands that she is Vroomfondle and Majikthise, I mean that she is a real journalist

[info]phosfate
Over on Dreamwidth, impertinence
posts a warning that Aja is planning to write a Daily Dot article on hockey RPF. Because publicising RPF always ends well for fandom.

Aja replies, apparently without irony, that "...it is not my attention to shine a spotlight in places that don't want spotlights shown."

You can imagine the rest, but you don't have to. Because you have links.

ETA: Aja says she's not writing the article after all. http://bookshop.tumblr.com/post/37422170053

50 Shades of Legal Fuck Ups

[info]sepiamagpie
This is a two-parter. Choose your favourite half.

This all starts over on Fandom Lounge (sort of!), where it is revealed that author, Casea Major first made a novel based off 50 shades and just as we found out about this joy she removed all traces of it from the internet.

Why did she do it? Well, it may have something to do with how EL James (author of 50 Shades) recently cease and desisted someone's lingerie parties that were themed after her books.

Actual quote: EL James’ agent Valerie Hoskins said the legal letter was not personal, adding: “You can’t just hijack something someone else owns.”

Now we enter into the next phase!

Cleolinda tweets about it, because that's what Cleo does.

Enter: AJA

See, lately Aja's blogger for the Daily Dot.

Anyway, she decides to write an article and tweets Cleo about the article:

Cleo does not respond.

So Aja tweets again:

Wait, what's Cleo talking about? What official account? WELL. Included on Aja's post, was this screencap:

Sounds hilarious, right? It's a photoshop though. If only because if it HAD happened Cleo would have it bronzed on her wall. But that's okay, because Aja wouldn't claim a photoshop was rea--oh, she did. Because that's how you Journalism in Aja land.

I'm not being unkind, she actually admits it:

Okay, she admits it AFTER Cleo keeps asking her about it (read these bottom up):

If the image isn't working, she says this about how she factchecks: "you know i was afraid of that, i tried to find it yesterday too & didn't confirm before we went to press. should have asked you!"

As of this post, Aja has kept a link to the photoshop in case she can magically verify it.

Don now the raiments of sorrow

tetradecimal
Rejoice! Despair! It is time now for Self-Flagellation Variety Hour, starring Aja:

An anon posits this question: "I understand that you're apologizing, but this is kind of getting old. Why must you cause trouble in every fandom you join? First Hikago, and now, Inception. I want to be more tolerant, but why can't you think before you speak?"

To summarize:
* It's never Aja's fault
* It's always Aja's fault
* What is this, a fandom for ANTS?

Also, fail_fandomanon's thoughts on the matter.

Note: This is a follow-up to a previous post on uff. Thanks to the mice at wank_report.

ETA: There is apparently more of this, if you are not still gorged on Halloween candy.

Your Special Snowflake Isn't Personalized Enough

[info]tehrin
Wank found via [info]wank_report.

[info]lavendergaia, a.k.a. Kelly, doesn’t like the snowflake cookie V-gifts she’s been sent over on lj and expresses her displeasure on her journal:

Please do not read if you are easily offended

People, these are getting ridiculous. In the past two days, I have gotten almost 30 snowflake cookie gifts. You know how many of those were personalized or written in a way that I could tell that they were for me? About 5, probably less. I know that everyone is saying that they're free and it's the thought that counts, but I don't see any thoughtfulness in sending a free gift with a generic message that you've copied and pasted to every other person on your flist. My bank does that, but they at least take the time to put my name on it.

If I don't mean anything to you other than a name on a list who you occasionally talk to, that's fine. I am okay with that. But getting a copy/paste message on a free gift that takes a minute to send just shows that I am not important. There's really no need for you to take the small amount of time and send it. And for those of you who commented yesterday that you did do it because you cared, I appreciate that, but the fact that you have to say it means that your gift didn't and isn't that the point of gifts? To show how much you care?

Frankly, the majority of these snowflakes just say that you like having someone on your flist, but not enough to take the time to personally wish me a happy holidays or to do anything special. Maybe I'm alone in this, but I'd much rather get a nice comment or PM speaking to me as a person then the same gift you give to everyone else. That's not caring; that's obligation.

So thank you to everyone who acknowledged that I exist. And a large, genuine thank you who took the time to use the gifts to show that they care.

Her friends then start apologizing about sending her snowflake cookies. Eventually, people show up who don’t hold the same opinion.

[info]bookshop was linked by a “few people who were pretty much speechless with disbelief” and thinks this to be “completely classless.”

[info]ladyvyola translates Kelly’s post as “A big "fuck you" to anyone who took a moment to do something thoughtful for me.” Down-thread, Kelly says its been two weeks since the post was made and everyone is already over it, forgetting that the internet never really gets over anything.

[info]jane_doe_ tells Kelly "you are a bad person and whoever raised you did a really bad job. Sorry."

So why are these snowflakes so damn special? [info]bridget_x_alena explains to an anon:

Not really, because when people are buying gifts, they're picking something that they know a) the person will like, b) the person wants, or c) will mean something to the giftee. Key word here being 'buying'. As in, 'spending money on' because that person clearly means enough to have something bought for them. If I were to get the same free present for all of my friends, the ones that I only talk to once in a while are going to be like, "huh?" and the ones I talk to all the time are going to wonder why more thought wasn't put into it.

If anything, the fact that they were free made them less special because it was like most people were just saying, "HERE, I don't care about you enough to spend .99 on other vgifts during the rest of the year so here's this thing!"

Oh, and way to not have the balls to own up to your opinion.

ETA: [info]lavendergaia has discovered she has been wanked. She's also shown up on [info]sf_drama and [info]sf_anon

Despite seeming so happy about being wanked in the above link to her journal, Kelly added this ETA to her original post:

2 Weeks Later ETA: Hello to everyone who is going to troll this and people here from Fandom Wanks. Hi! If you're going to comment, please at least make it fun. Thanks in advance! (Look, see, I can be thankful!)

ETA2: Okay, I'm bored with this now. And I plan to take another muscle relaxer and sleep for at least 12 hours and don't want to come up with an inbox full of trolls. Leaving the post open so people can mock or do whatever they want, but posting is disabled for now. I might reopen it again later if I get bored.

Nothing is better than a "I am so happy, but not really" flounce. Comments are locked. I hope everyone here has known better than troll the wank. Instead of snowflakes, she has recieved 12 cakes for Grinchmas from mice who respected her wishes and left personalized messages.

[info]ladyvyola has popped over here in the report to say hello.

ETA 2: And now there's a community.

You're a plagiarist becase *I SAY SO*!

[info]ladyofviolets
A certain well-known person in the Hikaru no Go (Aja aka bookshop, whom you might remember thanks to other kerfuffles she's been in) claims that some BNF's had their fics plagiarised. And posts about it in her journal. Citing excerpts of the fics by both "victims" and "culprits" (which, in this repoter's opinions, aren't THAT similar) and a *very* wanky call to fandom.

So, yeah, SHUN HER, discredit her, go forth and spread the word. Let the trumpets of indignation sound!

And people start commenting about it. Some excerpts are here:

- What a skeeve. Can't you use your BNF to make ppl troll this journal?

- "She deleted her DW!" "that's the power of the BNF lol"

- The author tries to defend herself. And is hatepiled on. Errrr...

- "Please understand, I'm not implying that *any* of these fics are plagiarized, I'm saying that I'm not sure but I suspect..."

- A post on it by one of the supposedly plagiarised authors

One of the so-called "culprits" accused has had it, though! And she's NOT gonna take it! Watch as Aja keeps insisting that there was plagiarism, pretty much making an ass outta herself, and people come to umareawareru's defense.

... And finally, Aja snaps. And SCREAMS.

HNG fandom. Please leave me THE FUCK alone. Kthx )

Thank you so much, mousies from wank report!

ETA: [info]mischif tells us that Aishuu has written about the subject. Thanks to ya too!

Strikethrough Two: Electric Boogaloo

[info]churri
Fanartists [info]ponderosa121 and [info]elaboration have been permanently suspended from LiveJournal. As far as I can tell, there's no word from [info]elaboration yet, but [info]ponderosa121 received this email from the LJ Abuse team. Update: [info]elaboration received an identically-worded notice.

The innocence_jihad post, with links and suggestions to protest in the comments over at lj_biz and lj_news. And fandom takes up the invitation to troll/spam/comment. With glee.

Fandom_tossed on greatestjournal keeps track of the most recent batch of TOSsing.

Metafandom collects fandom's reactions. Fandom is justifiably upset.

The wank's all coming from LJ/6A this time around, folks. Update: This statement is no longer true, if it ever was true in the first place. It doesn't change the fact that the 6A team has a lot of 'splainin to do, though.

(I'm sorry that this report's lacking in teh_funny, but LJ's most recent dickishness deserves documentation. Hey, that alliterates.)

ETA: elke_tanzer has even more references and links, for those who are curious. And synecdochic explains the current legal situation and its possible impact on the latest batch of strikethroughs.

ETA II: Ladies and gentlefen, we have Godwin's in action. (Thanks, [info]barankhy and [info]passerby.) And the LJ Abuse team "clarifies" matters.

ETA III: Ponderosa responds to her suspension. Elaboration does the same.

Oh look! It's time for anonymeme wank! Or, "It's about grief."

[info]snacky
I'm sorry, really, but I have to do it. It's okay, I know the anons already hate me (and my mom). But they requested it! Plus, they don't give a fuck about being wanked! They'll just laugh at f_w for being so wanky as to laugh at them!

This Week on Journal Fen: Mods and Anons and Pandas, Oh My!

[info]doriangrey

All right, here's a report about what's been going down. Thank you to the person who gave me their spare account and to the people who helped put this together.

******

We've all learned a lot this week. Disagreeing with [info]pyratejenni anywhere, anytime will get you banned. Being reasonable won't get you anywhere, missy. You can just satisfy that banning fetish elsewhere! Anyone with legitimate concerns can just STFU. Keep that common decency to yourselves, u h0rs! No, no one said anything about any death threats, it was actually death to het, or something. Damn Harry Potter slashers. Well, maybe not, but it's as good an explanation as any.

Still, we're left with many questions and anon memes don't do much to provide the answers. Is all this posturing merely a ploy by [info]pyratejenni to get the attention of a certain special someone? And will [info]fpb live happily ever after? Not even the pandas know. These kinky creatures can tell you what's it's like to be the sidekick or about British indy movies but they can get homesick.

Celebrity guests, love and hate, some shipping, yes to double penetration and no to pull-outs (but what if you only have one ass?), and we will never look at Christian Bale or Stephen Colbert the same way again (don’t worry Stephen, you’ll always be top anchor with us!). Doctor Who makes a valiant effort to kill the internet but in the end, all your fandoms are belong to Bale Panda.

(Sadly, not all fics could be included but there's a list of pandafic here.)

prince of tennis wank: is it a shipping war? a fandom war? or...

[info]cimorene111
[this post fed to me by an anonymouse. neither the legwork involved in rounding up links nor the composition itself is mine.]

Our story begins with Prince of Tennis, the dirty little anime about gay tennis. Apparently not content with ruining the Harry Potter fandom, Tenipuri fandom has turned viciously upon itself.

Enter one [info]lovedoesthat, aka the creator of the much-loved [info]hdcomic. Does she ship Tezuka/Fuji or Tezuka/Ryoma? Could it be she's just here for the mocking? And does it even matter when the wank starts to flow?

The End of the Inner Circle Wank?

[info]narcissam
Gacked from [info]wank_report [info]bookshop aka Aja has announced locking her LJ for a few weeks because people can't accept she's left HP fandom and keep insulting her new fandom, Prince of Tennis.

Links to any of the previous wankage that lead up to this would be appreciated.

ETA: The FW n00bs don't know who Aja is??? That tears it. I'm leaving!

Because's there's nothing worse in Fando--TENNIS! than a bad return.

[info]mrsparkle
Just when you thought it would all die down...

Someone, or actually, the Owner of the Site That Banned A Thousand Indiana Students makes the rest of the Harry Potter BNF's look like wanky amateurs.

Well, actually...no.

But! She /did/ manage to postulate (during some bout of illness that makes her shit in...chartreuse?) that UMBRIDGE=Aja.

And she liked the twatty icon, btw.

Domlijah? What's that? ;)

a small continuation of the "omg aja is sikotic!" saga

[info]sidekick
What always, always amuses me about Potter wank is the people who say that "oh wait, I really don't care about fandom's opinion" and then proceed to write up a giant rant about the fandom and disable comments. Not a bunch of wanking in this since the comments were disabled, unless you count the post alone which by itself is a big pile.

"The longer vanityfair stays in fandom, the more it becomes clear that she is truly and utterly psychotic."
Honey, I don't think Aja's the psychotic one here.

[info]hugsnkisses
The HP wank disappeared around 11pm GMT last night, I was actually reading through the comments when it did and thought I had managed to save a copy, alas it was not to be.

There is however, the un-edited version of what Aja posted, quite different to the version she now has on her journal.

Deleting your wank just isn't cool man, especially if you're "laughing at yourself" (honest) in the first place.

Oh yes, and I just thought I should mention that FW is over a year old now. *pets it*

Since there was a request below, the links to the latest HP wank:

Aja posts that "anyone who has lost respect for me because of something I've said or things they've seen over the last few days: I just want to say that I understand, and if any of you want to stop considering me a friend or defriend me, there'll be no hard feelings on my part." Nice and vague, no? She then goes on to say that her "privacy has been invaded" and she doesn't want to drag stuff out in public.

Bonibaru posts to say that Aja emailed her to accuse her of hacking Aja's journal and spreading a private post about. She denies doing it, saying that her computer skills barely allow her to find her computer's "on" button. [ETA: This post is now friendslocked, but you can read Aja's response if you're so inclined.]

Ivy Blossom then posts saying that someone made death threats against her in a private post, and she no longer feels safe in going to Nimbus 2003 (The HP gathering thingie planned for later this month.) Everyone and their dog posts in support.

Aja fights back by saying that Ivy had planned to cancel her trip anyway because Bonibaru wasn't going. Also, by letting people know that she CRIED, you heartless bastards! And she said she was sorry, in a vague and roundabout fashion! What has she done to deserve your cruelty?

The fun never stops here in HP fandom.

ETA: Apparently the "death threat" post was a parody, a tidbit of info that got left out of all previous public mentions. The text of it is here.
