Blind bag sized wank

[info]sepiamagpie
A wild link appears <-- so there was some bullshit about 'kill a brony day' which is whatever because no one's going to go out and murder someone and fandom walks into walls when left unattended, but the reasons the person taking it seriously gives suspiciously leaves out 'because murder is wrong'

Quoted because that layout is horrendous:

up-with-bronies:

I’ve heard rumors of ‘Kill A Brony Day’, whether these are old news rumors or not, I don’t know, but I would like to make one thing very clear;

Do not cause physical harm to anyone, unless you have a justified reason that isn’t ‘they’re a brony’. I don’t like them either, but you shouldn’t hunt them down, since ‘they’re a brony’ isn’t going to hold up in court.

And you’ll just be fueling their self righteousness, so there’s a second reason not to kill bronies. Don’t make any of them ‘martyrs’

-Vinyl

To recap:

1. Fandom does stupid thing
2. Person takes it seriously, tells people to not go out and murder people because of fandom because that was totally likely to happen
2b. Fandom is dumb
3. Person's reasons neglect to say murder is wrong, but just says you cannot justify it to the cops if you kill someone for being a brony
4. Sep is more alarmed at that part than any of the other parts

Incidentally, there have been fandom related murders but it tended to be over infidelity.

The Russet Doom Saga, Part III

[info]caito
Lady Sybilla put out another press release. She also showed up at the Twilight Lexicon again, since that went so well the last time. (When the formatting gets hard to read, check it here.)

(Fanhistory links are all nofollow.)

After her Wikipedia article was deleted (you can go to the Russet-Noon webpage for more information), Lady Sybilla edited the shit out of the Russet Noon Fanhistory page all by her lonesome (despire Laura Hale asking around on Bebo whether anyone else had anything to contribute).

And in case your blog entry about the whole affair shows up there, I'm sorry. Lady Sybilla farmed the Russet Doom Supplementary Links Collection and changed my format a little to make the attention seem less wholly negative.

Oh also I put together an
entry in my journal with links to screencaps and transcriptions and things, for quick and easy reference.

The Russet Doom Saga, Part II

[info]caito
For those just tuning in:

Lady Sybilla wanted to put out Russet Noon, her tribute sequel to the Twilight Saga via sockpuppet publisher. Smeyer never drew her characters, so this totally wasn't copyright infringement. She put out press releases, a Youtube reading, and listed her book on eBay months and months before she intended to make it available.

Then, of course, the "massive hate campaign" began. Darn Earth logic!

I myself wrote no less than four separate versions of a wank report, as I tried to keep on top of everything (and eventually lost my grip on sanity).

Lady Sybilla did not take this well. She pretend-banned the russet-noon site, taking down its former glory, then changed it to goad voyeurs.

And what did I get for my efforts? Emails from Lady Sybs herself.

Now she's put up a message directing us to the interview she did at a Brazilian fan site.

In the words of Stephenie Meyer, "When a story demands to be written, there's no way to resist."

Yes, Sybsy baby, and your story demands to be put down. Um, I mean the reports on you, not Russet Noon. Your tomfoolery must be chronicled for posterity the lulz.

But wait, there's more! Aaaaaaand she's back to writing press releases. It's the Foforks interview with this blurb at the end:
AV Paranormal Publishing is an independent publisher in the Los Angeles area. We publish online books, digital art and paperback novels. No unsolicited manuscript submissions are considered. We accept query emails with a short synopsis. Email your queries to submissions@avparanormal.com
O rly? Also the Twilight Lexicon is back to smacking her down. Kisses, kids!

And guess what just came up in my Google reader? This post by Karen Knows Best! Which led me to go and check...yes! Lee Goldberg is back on the case!

Now for the tl;dr... )
In other news, I'm totally over this email business. I have a spam filter and I intend to use it. If someone wants to continue discussing this shiz, she can do so in the comments like everybody else.
ETA: Yes, we can haz more press release.

A different flavor of vampire wank

[info]cleolinda
What follows is an account written by swsa, a friend without a JF account, and it is such a classic take-the-money-and-run story that I present it to you unaltered (well, okay, I threw in some links).

~*~*~*~

In Moonlight fandom, their high priestess of campaigning is named Leeser. Leeser's status in the fandom grew and grew as she organized fan cons, did the leg work for their Variety ad, etc. She is absolutely beloved and a hero of their cause. Which is why another fan apparently felt secure enough to give her $11000 in order to pay for bus ads to run in L.A. This ends about as well as you might expect )

ETA ∞: I was waiting to update until the supposed Leeser-vindicating deadline this afternoon, but it looks like... I don't even know what. So:

The donor updates:
The ad agency has stated they cannot confirm whether the funds are available or not. The New York office is placing at least a 3-5 day hold on Lesser's account in order to verify funding with the bank, however it may be longer. They are now hoping to be able to post this account on Friday. The ads have arrived and are waiting in the warehouse. Lesser is aware of this. I am so angry at this moment I dare not say too much more. One thing I must say though is to Lesser: Shame on you! To put me through this is one of the most unconscionable deeds I have experienced in my life.

Also: Homophobia on Leeser's board? Convention money shenanigans? Sockpuppetry? (Note: the Blue Whale Pub board seems to be down at the moment.)

ETA ∞ +1: And now about $8K in convention funds cannot be accounted for. (More.) Yes, we are pretty sure this is not VB on the rampage again.

ETA ∞ +2: I think [info]dhaunea called this one...

ETA ∞ +3:: The ads are going up on Monday?

ETA 9/29/08: Y'all, please somebody take this over and do a new entry or something. I can't keep up with all the board shenanigans now.

And the Twilight Wank Saga continues with an author flounce...

[info]ilya
As a lot of you must know by now, the first 12 Chapters of Midnight Sun, Smeyer's addition to her Uh-may-zing boooookes was leaked on the internet several days ago, and this has chagrined her dazzle verily.

From her official website:

August 28, 2008 (part II)

As some of you may have heard, my partial draft of Midnight Sun was illegally posted on the Internet and has since been virally distributed without my knowledge or permission or the knowledge or permission of my publisher.

I have a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique. Due to little changes I made to the manuscript at different times, I can tell when each left my possession and to whom it was given. The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.

I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn't mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn't like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn't dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

I'd rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun. It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and full of mistakes. But how do I comment on this violation without driving more people to look for the illegal posting? It has taken me a while to decide how and if I could respond. But to end the confusion, I've decided to make the draft available here (at the end of this message on the Midnight Sun page). This way, my readers don't have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest. I hope this fragment gives you further insight into Edward's head and adds a new dimension to the Twilight story. That's what inspired me to write it in the first place.

I do want to take a moment and thank the wonderful fans who have been so supportive of me over the past three years. I cannot begin to tell you how much each of you means to me. I only hope this note will stop all the confusion and online speculation so that the Twilight universe can once again become the happy escape it used to be. After this incredibly busy year, I am now focusing on spending more time with my family and working on some other writing projects.

--Stephenie

I don't think I need to add much more than that.  Lol.  This is so bloody beautiful...Oh Smeyer...please to be going over there to cry upon your pile of ill-begotten millions.  We all know that that book is going to be finished and published eventually so that you can add to your dragon hoard of booty.

Who else thinks that she's just waaaaahing for the sympathy and threatening to not provide any more crack so that everyone can forget about the epic fail that was Breaking Dawn and start kissing her ass again? *raises hand*

Edit:

And we get reactions from the Amazon Boards and the ♥ TwiMoms ♥. The ONTD comm weighs in on the situation.

And the NuttyMadam reacts. Though sorry, there's no vid this time since she took it down. But here, have a transcription of the lost vid, courtesy of [info]aegflota

We are all a bunch of meanies hiding away in this little club house of ours.

Smeyer Ego stroking.

Bonus Snack: The Twimoms just cannot leave the poor boy alone!. There's wankiness in the second link, as the TwiMom in the picture appears and asks for her photo to be taken down. Also, Here is a step by step instruction manual on how to go about your Pretty Vampire Actors stalking, for you n00bs who have no idea how to go about it. It is illustrated and everything. The TwiMoms are nothing, if not thorough.

OH NOES YOU GUISE! They be calling the FBI on us!!! WHAT DO WE DO? WHAT DO WE DO?

Twilight is going to save our country from the evil lesbians so you'd better all stop dissing it!

Cleolinda Midnight Sun Commentary! Yay. Lol.

ETA:How do you gain respect for your much derided favorite author? Why, by starting an online petition for it, of course!

Epilogue Wank, Twilight Style

[info]tehrin
Mucho gracias to the folks over on [info]wank_report. AND A SPOILER WARNING WITH EXTRA SPARKLES FOR TWILIGHT FANS. I suggest Twilight fans who actually care that much about being spoiled avoid this post like the plague.

Why do I feel we've been through this before? )
ETA: Fixed the tag on the last link. Sorry, folks.
ETA3: A support request was entered by someone claiming to be from a law firm, claiming to represent the publishing group with a pretty much standard letter that has been going around like a strain of herpes to people leaking the book or even discussing spoilers (julian_black explains exactly why here). I don't think intellectual property laws work that way.

text can be found here )

Other posts concerning the leaks can be found here and a twilight_news (thanks to [info]hooloovoo_too). Possible confirmation of some of the spoilers has also sparked more wank over here.

There's some more fun over at ontd (the macros start on page 2). The OP itself only concerns the movie, but that doesn't stop people from wanking over the spoilers.

ETA4: system is love.

Go System! )

And there's now been blurry confirmation on spoilers (thanks to [info]miraba).

ETA5: Ok, guys, lay off the Mormons or I'm going to have to ask you to get out of the pool. I really, really, REALLY hate to quote [info]mcity but plz no Mormon bashing. Let's have some class.

ETA6: SMeyer allegedly wrote a parody version of Breaking Dawn according to this EW article (thanks to [info]greenconverses).

Fail mods are failing

[info]sepiamagpie
Dearest, beloved, Fandom Wank.

I know you were looking forward to great excitement today. Some of you said words to me that indicated you anticipated fiery 'judgement' upon those who remained fresh and dewey white, those you call n00bs.

Anyway, you got today instead.

Stop anticipating things, we'll just break your hearts.

Sincerely,

Sepia P. Magpie, Esq.

PS: Use this post to reflect on how you could be better people. Or just fuck around in the comments.

WAH WAH! I want my fansubs!

[info]hypno_jango
On the Kuro Hana Subs site, they received a C&D letter from Viz to stop subbing Death Note (which only has two episodes to go, BTW). Death Note fans are known for being smart and mature so I'm sure they are handling the news very well and the forum didn't explode with capslock in any way.

Oh wait... )

To Loli, or not to Loli? Internet Law and Anime Girls

sharonapple
Down over on the Hongfire forums, where one can help themselves to fanservice or outright hentai wanking material, there is a big kerfuffle over the ever controversial subject of Loli. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term, Loli is (broadly speaking) anime/manga pornography with very young females. Shota, is the male equivalent.

The Story? Last month, moderator Shragei posted that after much research, they had deduced that Lolicon was in violation of United States law. Seeing as I only poke around Hongfire for the random TypeMoon books, the occasional pretty CG, and am not a Loli fan, I didn't really give this much more than a passing glance. Unfortunately, this meant that I missed 13 pages of glorious spooge. Take a gander at some of the intraweb lawyering, the "omg u guyrs r sick for liking loli", and the "OMG there's nothing wrong with it stop persecuting me!", "this is great for breaking my obsessions with porn!", and "This is a dark day on Hongfire."

Then, two days ago, Para announced that the Loli gallery was reinstated because apparently it is legal. Naturally, everyone starts bickering again. There is weirdness about whether or not HF is hosted in Australia (where Loli is illegal) or the U.S, or (as they are actually hosted in the U.S.) if the owner (wo lives in Australia) should follow the rules of their home country, even though the server is elsewhere. More intraweb-lawyering, and somewhere around the end Ayunite and karenSP go at it. Geohound03 also gets his panties in a twist, saying that the mods shouldn't have made the mistake of removing it in the first place-- and if they wanted to remove it- they should have damn well left it removed!

Ayunite and karenSP )</center> Those two keep wanking until the end of page seven, although before that, karenSP makes an overgeneralization and assumes Ayunite is one of them Christian people who hate porn:

This is exactly how christans are, they refuse to listen to ANYTHING that is even remotely against what they believe and exaggerate all situations to better their arguement )

Around page seven, geohound03 resurfaces and screams at everyone for not listening to him and taking him out of context because they are Loli fanboys. I think he misunderstands karenSP's spooging at Ayunite, for spooge directed at himself.

Finally, Lisa Hayes is fed up and closes the thread.

Harhar, wank in a hentai forum. Who didn't see that coming?

ANN never disappoints

[info]hypno_jango
From Mousy on Wank_Report:

So, Anime News Network posts a piece of news titled "NEWS: Otakon Enforces Copyright at Artists' Alley"

On the forums, fans quickly jump to conclusions and voice their various opinions on the topic ("various" meaning "omfg how can they!" and "finally someone did the right thing to those suckers!"). As usual, suddenly everyone's a lawyer, quoting Wikipedia and various trusted and not-so-trusted sources, and of course it's complete with people with attitudes: "I've been in the fandom longer than you so I'm right and you're wrong" (Colonel Wolfe) and "I write for quasi-famous online magazines so I can look down on you" (Zac). People are accusing Otakon with selling out.

Even some real VIPs pipe in:

http://animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=240315#240315

http://animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=240322#240322

http://animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=240127#240127

And then, Colonel Wolfe posts a looong article titled 'Bloatacon' taken from another website which is apparently "incorrect in many ways".

The owner of the website the article is quoted from shows up who is apparently dedicated to spread the word about the great "injustice that is being committed against fanartists". Posts are being edited.

In the meanwhile, Otakon issues an official statement regarding the problem - it only stirs up more trouble, as it turns out, as people are now accusing Otakon with wishy-washying and trying to divert attention from the problem. In the end, Colonel Wolfe comes up with a shocking conspiration theory.

And it's still going. (Provided that the mods don't lock the thread or delete it.)

It's only been four days.

[info]reddiej
I saw this while searching through hp_icons and was going to report it to [info]wank_report, but someone beat me to it.

Well, 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' just came out four days ago technically, if you count it being released midnight on the 18th of November. Some countries don't get the movie until much later, even until December.

Of course this doesn't mean that the movie already hasn't been leaked on the 'net, of course. [info]teh_indy already has caps up of GoF just a few days after release, and well, someone who hasn't seen it has complained about not cutting the post for spoilers.

From this, many people have basically said 'if you don't want to be spoiled, don't click the link', but much arguing is being had with [info]solus_aetas with everyone about how it's not fair that some countries got to see GoF before others as well as claiming that the caps are illegal, and all of [info]teh_indy's friends come to defend her honour and insult [info]solus_aetas's English, amongst other things.

Fansubbing vs. Official Subbing, Where Does it End?!

[info]skewed_tartan
Open a debate of Fan subs vs. Offcial Subs on any public forum and you're guarnteed wank. However things really don't start to heat up until page two.

Someone just has to bring up ambigious legal staus of fansubbing, and starts the wank.

You're an ungrateful bastard for not paying for anime!, posted by the OP, who at first was tolerant of fansubbing. Wank changes people fast.

It appears fansubbing's legality is open to interpetation.

"End of argument" if only.

Its Illegal!, no its not, and in fact they are often of good quality.

On page four we are subjected to a rousing legal debate where our wankers clearly use all of their education to argue whether or not its legal to translate a Japanese cartoon for hobby reasons. I love the internet.

Oh no! I'm being threatened!

Anime is NOT a fad!, wank spawns more wank.

Jack Thompson comparsion is called up. That guy needs his own law, he's getting as popular as Hitler in arguments nowadays.

Put a spork in me, I'm done!

Can't we just buy you an IPod

[info]embitca
Remember the good olde days when people on your friendslist just hinted around for you to buy them IPods and paid LJ time?? Well, I'm sorry, but that is so 2004 and we have inflation to contend with!

Now you can buy a fanfic writer a WHOLE YEAR OFF WORK so she can finish her WIPs for a show that's been off the air for a few years now. Someone should let Joss Whedon know, or at least contact the other writers who helped her write it in the first place. Will they all get a share of the profits?

Oh, and big surprise, no comments allowed on her post. Don't worry, cutie. If we can't flame you there, we'll flame you here.

UPDATED: A response from Cousin Jean aka OH, the unmitigated gall!

Updated again: The original post begging for cash has been deleted, so Yay for Fandom Peer Pressure! And a smart fandom_wanker preserved the post in a C&P so we can continue to mock! And if she's only taken it down in order to revise it and repost, I will of course link to any further stupidity that she cares to share with all of fandom.

Update No. 3: Second post has been edited. Here's the C&P of the original version.

Update No. 4: New Post: Goodbye, Cruel Internets!!

Update the 5th? The Fallout:

Elynross has a round-up of amusing links referring to the wank of the day. I'll direct you to her post instead of linking them myself since I'm lazy and I've been working hard all day to keep you updated (why aren't you bitches paying me???!)

Cesperanza has some commentary which might be wank-worthy itself just by virtue of being serious ;)

If you come across anything else interesting, let me know and I'll add it to the main post.

So [info]lizbee makes a post about the new Australian law. [info]iibnf then decides that chan writers are pedophiles. People are pissed.

As for what the deleted comment said? [info]snapetoy is happy to tell us. Then it's discovered that [info]iibnf has in fact written "kiddie porn". Ouch. Much backpedaling and claims of "parody" ensue. She also seems a bit unclear on exactly what chan is.

Quick! Before the FBI finds us!

[info]schuldig
Surprisingly close to April Fools' Day (and yet, not close enough), digisubbers Anime-Keep announce that they have been shut down by the FBI. In addition, anyone who used BitTorrent to download anime will be traced.

At AnimeSuki, this thread emerges as people debate how to reformat their hard-drives so They won't find all the illegal fansubs, most point and laugh at the obvious joke, and others threaten to never download another Anime-Keep release again OMG if this is just a practical joke.

Anime-Keep finally own up on their website:
(early) April Fools!

Though we must say we love you fans out there, nothing cheered us up more than seeing your crazy reactions to the early April Fools. I really feel sorry for thoses that did dig a hole for your CDs and format your hard drives, I wish you better luck next time!

ChibiDusk, one of the most terrified of the previous posters, now claims (s)he was bored and was just "being dramatical". Fun all round.

And the Mary-Sue cel strikes again

tailfluff
Update on the "Mary-Sue" cel that first posted about.

She's posted yet another fancel- this time featuring her "original character" and Shippou

Here's said auction

My question still remains- Does she realize that without the Mary-sue she could actually sell these things?

Fansub wank

[info]sarajayechan
"Where can I find Yami no Matsuei fansubs?" "Fansubs are evil and wrong!" "Well, EXCUSE ME for being poor and living somewhere I don't have access to the official release!"

I really hate doing this. I LIKE that community-I love yaoi, I have fun with my friends there, and people post good stuff. So it pains me when I see wank erupting there. u.u;;;

Mmm, fresh wank.

[info]rowan
This would be my first post here, but I'm a longtime lurker. Just never found any worthy wank to post... but now I have. Oh yes. This is anime wank of the finest kind. It's the old 'legality of fansubs' debate kicked up a notch.

For those not in the know, fansubbing is when fans translate, subtitle and distribute anime, for free, no cost. It's purely a labor of fannish love. Ethical fansubbers - which make up most of the community - only sub and release series that haven't been licensed for release in North America. Once a series is licensed, the fansubbers usually stop subbing it, and stop distributing the episodes. Now, there are a few groups that keep subbing licensed stuff, in the gap between licensing and actual stateside release. Most of these groups keep very quiet about what they're doing, and will immediately stop subbing once their anime has been formally released.

However, there is a group called Anime-Junkies that's become rather infamous in anime fandom. They're 'renowned' for releasing fansubs extremely quickly, subbing an ENORMOUS number of series at the same time, and having horrific subtitle quality. They also sub a lot of licensed stuff.

Here's where the wank comes in.

Anime-Junkies is currently subbing a series called Ninja Scroll, which has been licensed since before its Japanese release. So they sub it. That happens often, true - several groups are subbing the enormously popular (and very good) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, even though it's been licensed for a while.

However, the licensor of the title in North America, Urban Vision, discovered this. They e-mailed Anime-Junkies and asked them if they would please stop subbing and distribution of Ninja Scroll.

The response? Well, it speaks for itself. Responses from the subbers range from the ever-polite "Rot in hell" to "Who the fuck are you anyways to buy a series we were doing?" Wank of the highest caliber, here.

And the wank spreads as one of the most well-known anime news sites, Anime News Network, releases an editorial on the whole thing, slamming Anime-Junkies for their behavior.

Watch as it spreads across the community! Fun for all!
