The National Theatre refuses to condone bootleg recordings of its plays... OMGPERSECUTION!

[info]kumquat_of_doom
Moved from [info]clairvoyantwank on grounds of extra wanking and journal bahleetion. Also, because people asked me to.

Context: the National Theatre is one of the UK's most major theatre companies, and one of its most popular (and critically-acclaimed) productions of the last few years was Danny Boyle's version of Frankenstein, which starred Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. In light of the play's popularity (I believe every single night sold out), the NT put on a cinema production of the play, which has so far had an unprecedented TWO runs. There have been rumours in fandom that there'll be a DVD of the play, rumours which were completely scotched a few months back -- basically because the cast said no.

Anyway, thwarted fans = much kerfuffling, and bootleg recordings have been (predictably enough) doing the rounds in fandom -- I know for a fact that there's one of JLM as the Creature, though I don't believe there's one of Cumberbatch in the same role. (Unfortunately.)

SO, naturally, one such thwarted fan, [info]hikarikame, takes it upon herself to write to the NT themselves, asking them to condone aforesaid bootlegs. What she hoped to accomplish I really don't know, but she appears to have been, shall we say, somewhat miffed when the NT was, er, less than enthusiastic about the idea of supporting pirate versions of its own copyrighted material.

I suspected she'd be even less happy when she read her own fandom's reaction to all of this... I turned out to be right! LOTS of passive-aggressive happening, all over the map, as people attempted to bring common sense to bear on the issue. [info]hikarikame has now deleted her journal AND her Tumblr; I have screencaps of her post in Cumberbatchfans, but not of her Tumblr.

Wil Wheaton vs. A Pirate: Clash of the Internets

[info]platedlizard
You'll have to excuse me. I decided that I wanted a Dvorak keyboard instead of a Qwerty keyboard and I am basically relearning how to type.

From Clairvoyantwank.

Someone posts a pirated download of Wil Wheaton's audiobook Just a Geek. Wil finds out and is Not Happy.

an open letter to the guy put the just a geek audiobook on his website for people to steal. )

No word yet from Lee Goldburg, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Spore Spawns Wank

[info]pointandlaugh
So after, what, two years of waiting, Spore is finally out. A trillian billion copies shipped to a trillion billion eagerly waiting fans.

And then the complaints started.

First they discover that Spore can only be activated three times before it stops re-activating Plus it uses SecureROM

Then they discover that you can only tie one user account to each activation code (Personal opinion: this is likely to completely kill any potential resale market).

Amazon goes nuts with a campaign of one star reviews which then disappear only to reappear claiming technical hitch.

That's the news. Where is the wank? Well, it's most easily found in the EA forums.

Getting long so I'll cut! )

Angry words are being exchanged, credit card charge backs and class-action suits are threatened, and people are confirming that the "misprint" also exists in foreign-language manuals. I suspect this has a long way to go before it burns out.

Fail mods are failing

[info]sepiamagpie
Dearest, beloved, Fandom Wank.

I know you were looking forward to great excitement today. Some of you said words to me that indicated you anticipated fiery 'judgement' upon those who remained fresh and dewey white, those you call n00bs.

Anyway, you got today instead.

Stop anticipating things, we'll just break your hearts.

Sincerely,

Sepia P. Magpie, Esq.

PS: Use this post to reflect on how you could be better people. Or just fuck around in the comments.

Ahh DW fandom. Never stop.

[info]taleya
[info]tzikeh has a burning issue and a desire to ask a question of Doctor Who fen that is fandom specific, but not so specific to actually be referred to, even when asking permission of the mods to explore the question.

Eventually someone winkles the Great Mystery out of her, and it turns out that all Doctor Who fans are apparently Icon-thieveing bastards.

Evidently she's discovered one of the few pockets of wank that hasn't yet been thoroughly explored by the DW fandom, and the fur begins to merrily fly to correct this.   Arguments on fair use, pointing out that US law is not international law, cries of "Get the hell over it" and threats of litigation from felines commence

Anita Blake download wank with potential to grow

[info]mockingbird
Some Hit-and-Runner (or sockpuppet) posted a link to LKH Lashout and Anita Blake Fan that leads to a download of the new Anita Blake Book
Many Fans are happy to not have to spend the money on that pice of bad Pr0n shit, but then along comes Sweetpirate and askes for trouble:
Question: You are all aware that uploading Micah and reading it without paying is considered stealing and is illegal right?

Everyone is fast now to claim that even while they did download it they are of course going to buy the book anyway.

Meanwhile Hallow, who at first was rather high and mighty about not downloading but buying falls from her high horse, as she is admiting that she gets all her books from someone she knows working for a publishing house

And the mods?
They announce to take their sweet time until taking down the post with the download link
ETA: And they also decided that you now have to joint the community to enjoy the wank.... grrr

Gay Porn, Subs v Dubs v Economics 101, and a touch of Naruto bashing

[info]arekuru
Within one column, Anime News Network has succeeded in poking just about every sore spot in the anime fandom's side. Presented today for your delight: Gay Porn is teh Gross, Piracy is teh Communism, and Naruto Fans are teh Idiots. Of all of these, which do you suppose got the biggest response and which was almost ignored?

For those who aren't familiar with the site, Anime News Network, bastion of "Trusted Anime News," runs a column titled Answerman. The idea is that confused anime fans can write in to Answerman (or, if Answerman is gone for a two-year hiatus, Mrs. Answerman) and get answers to their burning questions, which range from "Why do superheroes come in groups of five?" to "When's the second season of Fruits Basket coming out?"

But what happens when you stop actually answering letters and start getting - real? )

[info]drhikari
First time poster, recent lurker. Herro there. Forgive my english, I am not a native English speaker, unfortunately.

My fandom, Rockman.EXE, is part of a bigger fandom (Rockman) which is overall peaceful, but we get wank from time to time. Um, make that "all the time". There's this board called Rockman.EXE Online Forums, a very popular place for the discussion of Rockman.EXE anime, manga, and games. One of the mods, Core Xion, reported an MSN group hotlinking to a bunch of sprites from REOF users, and encouraged everyone to report all stolen sprites in a respectful manner. Then, big surprise, there's more than a bunch of hotlinked sprites; some users spot stolen fanart, wallpapers, info... the whole site itself is made out of stolen material.

Obviously, everyone wants the group to burn, which leads to a very angry mob that would use torches on the thieves if the internet allowed it. REO's site owner, Ryouko, reports the thievery on REO's update page and encourages everyone to spam away. A lovely piece of wank ensues. While many want to killmaimburndestroy the hotlinkers, there's a small group telling the others to calm down and use their brains before spamming away. Plug-in! Wank.EXE, TRANSMISSION! )
