Comedy is hard. Wank is easy.

[info]frenzy
With a fanbase like Homestuck's, the bar is set pretty high for "baffling" things to say about the comic, but one Timothy Sexton catches creator Andrew Hussie's eye with his review/article/wordpile on Yahoo Movies that clears that bar easily:

"If you remain unaware of Homestuck as an internet phenomenon, then you either don't kids or aren't aware of this here thing called the internets. As George W. Bush liked to refer (and probably still refer) to it. Homestuck is one day going to become a movie of some sort. Comedy is hard. Death is easy. That makes Homestuck a juggler."

You can read the full thing here. You can't read it in its original form on Yahoo anymore, though, because it was removed. According to Timothy Sexton, Homestuck fans got it taken down because it was too intelligent for them and they were jealous, or something. We know this because he says so in his follow-up article, entitled "Homestuck Fans: Not Quite as Hip and Intellectually Gifted as They Think."

"Don't feed the troll? What does that mean?" -dozens of Homestuck fans.

Hussie, for his part, finds the entire thing hilarious.

Feminism? In a webcomic? It's more likely than you think.

[info]arekuru
For the last year and half or so, webcomic Sinfest has featured an intermittent storyline about feminism and "the sisterhood," with many of the characters being confronted with their anti-feministic views to varying reactions. As the comic started out with a lot of humor about drugs, sex, and stereotypes (and also a cute dog and cat, but that's not important right now), some readers have not been pleased with this change.

This comic pretty much sums up the background for you. For a quick overview of the complaints sans [much] wank, see the entries here for Base Breaker, Black Hole Sue, Double Standard, Jerk Sue, They Changed It Now It Sucks, and Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped. (Warning: link goes to TVTropes.)

The storyline's been going on long enough that wank has started to spill over a bit into many online "discussions" about comics and feminism (Shortpacked's comments section, for example), but is most conveniently observed right in Sinfest's own forums.

This is where the wank gets entertaining.'...a smattering of the hopelessly ignorant we might be able to lure in and taunt mercilessly.' )

Personally, I think it sounds a lot like the clack of lonely keyboards.

If two insult-slinging philosophers wank infinitely over the Banach-Tarski paradox in xkcd_rss, does it make a sound?

quikthnkr/Rob Tracy's Guide to Never Getting Another Freelance Artist & Winning at the Internet

[info]hylidae
Did your inker mysteriously disappear from your totz awesome, no pay job? Need a new inker for free? Just ask yourself, what would Rob Tracy (a.k.a. quikthnkr) do?

1. Post your request on DA. In the Paid Job section.
2. Argue when people inform you of the rules. (Rules are like, opinions, man.)
3. Grudge against artists who want to get paid for their work.
4. Grudge against previous co-workers.
5. Argue with people who give you solid advice.
6. Insult possible volunteers.
7. Calmly explain that the poor economy means that artists should be grateful for no pay, dead end jobs.
8. When all else fails declare yourself the winner.

Thanks to anon's wank report.

Why did his store go out of business? I can't imagine.

[info]white_serpent
(Bulk of this writeup taken from [info]wank_report-- thank you!)

Carl Anderson, webcomic writer, posts a comic in which he blames American Doctor Who fans for local retailers failing since they all buy on eBay. >:( ...And, calls them stupid, lazy, fat and a few other things, and claims that they deserve to get their show cancelled!

Hysterical, right? )

Wendy Pini and the Gay Romance Rip-off

[info]waltraute
We all love plagiarism wank, be it the saga of Cassie Claire or Aja going nuclear on someone. But it's always better when it involves pro authors!

Wendy Pini is best known as the co-author of Elfquest, a comic about elves. I've never read it, so just fill in the blanks here, look it up in wiki, etc. She's now publishing Masque of the Red Death, inspired by the famous Poe story but with gay romance in outer space. Of course, she's totally been getting hate mail from gay men about this series.

But, you might say, as you look at this extensive writeup of comparisons, doesn't that look a lot like Colleen Doran's A Distant Soil?

We're catching up on this one a little late, so if you look at the version on LJ, there's a whole host of ETAs, including the claim that Wendy Pini has never seen ADS...except a preview of it was published in one of the Elfquest issues. Oops!

You can see Colleen Doran's work at her website, if this writeup sparks your interest.

Thanks to the anons at wank_report.

We call it the aristocrats

tetradecimal
Dave Willis, author of the webcomic Shortpacked, posts a comic about two outspoken, popular(?) fandom bloggers who apparently are not big on Beast Wars. It is not very flattering.

These two bloggers (one Tom Croom, and one Joey Snackpants) soon show up in the comments to sow seeds of dissent. Or something.

Tom Croom is in a webcomic!
You clearly don't understand the true definition of "straw man".
Tom Croom will tell you why Beast Wars sucks if you donate $250 to the charity of his choice!
YOU CANNOT TRICK DAVE WILLIS.
Joey Snackpants still thinks Beast Wars sucks!

And as a bonus: This all started when because someone didn't get invited to a Transformers convention. I mean, have you seen their panel?

ETA: Apparently there's a Shortpacked tag.

[info]pinkranger
Jules Rivera, author of the webcomic Mash Rocket, posted an article to Comic Related a couple of months ago titled What qualifies as art in webcomics. Comics such as XKCD, Order of the Stick and Surviving the World are called lazy and crap. Jules even recommends hiring an overseas artist because their work is beautiful and "affordable."

Well, Dante from Surviving the World saw this two months later and decided to defend this new wave of webcomic mediums with a well thought out and executed argument. Some of his fans, however, not-so-much, and soon go to the two month article to share their opinion on the topic, as well as Jules' comic and art style (just scroll through the comments to see them, there's too many to choose from).

ETA: Spell-checked by grammar-freaky boyfriend!

ETA 2: Apparently, while I've been sleeping, there's been a bit of fighting on Dante's and Jules' twitter pages. Here's a classy little response from Jules

@danteshepherd if youre going to act like a child about this (as you clearly have) I rescind my offer and my apology. You are a lazy bastard

Bobby Crosby is a Douche Part the Nth

[info]anarchicq
It all starts when the creator of Sorcery 101 posts that she's moving her comics off Keenspot because Keenspot fired her.

She posts that she would have left before, but hasn't. But since she's fired, she has a Public Service Announcement for all those who may want to join Keenspot.

And before now I've never gone into specifics, but since I'm fired here's stuff people who were thinking of joining Keenspot should know.

- They lost my books the first day of San Diego Comic Con last year because they just forgot which box they were in. Fortunately, they were found the second day and I still sold out. But fact remains for a little while they lost 100 books.

- I hope you enjoyed those iPhone apps because they are getting taken down a few days from now. I never got a sales report on them, never mind paid for them in any way.

- I have talked to several Keenspot artists (not naming names so folks don't get in trouble) and found they have never gotten paid on time for their books.

- After the original excitement over iphone apps was over, Keenspot basically forgot they existed. They have been sitting on Sorcery 101 chapter 3 since before August. But I guess it's good it didn't go up since I wouldn't have gotten paid for that anyways. (All of the above are why I'm printing Sorcery 101 books myself and not letting Keenspot print them.)

- There is almost always a thread is the private forum for Keenspot creators which is asking "So when am I getting paid?"

- It could be days before tech problems are addressed. Ex: From Scratch is still not on Keenspot's front page and the comic drop down hasn't been updated in a year or so.

-Keenspots booth at Comic con was a disaster as far as planning went. They had banners advertising artists who weren't attending and none of those had Keenspots logo on it. People didn't even know what we were for. Someone asked an artist behind the Keenspot booth, "do guys know where the keenspot booth it?"

- Someone with access with Keenspot's official twitter used it to fight with Scott Kurtz making everyone involved with Keenspot look bad. Then it was used to lash out at a Keenspotter who used his personal twitter to tell them it's not cool to do that.

- The newsbox and Keenspot ads frequently get "stuck" on comics by the CEO's brother.

Keenspot's CEO jumps in to try to defend the company's honour.

The creator of the Darken comic quits Keenspot in prostest.

By the way, the CEO's brother? Bobby Crosby. Of course.

His reply?

"FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!! LIES! ALL LIES!"

An Anon replies with "Bobby, use smaller words.".

EDIT: Thanks to [info]freezer for this info. From Keenspot's main page.
ANNOUNCEMENT:Keenspot no longer accepting new webcomic submissions.

Posted By Chris Crosby at 12/19/2009 12:21:00 PM
Please note that Keenspot is no longer accepting new webcomic submissions, and has no plans to invite new members to Keenspot. Thank you for your interest.

NSFW Webcomic Artist Throwdown

[info]sadisticferret
NSFW NSFW NSFW

Questionable Content's Jeph Jacques and Shortpacked!'s Dave Willis have a little crossover going today, which leads to Willis posting this drawing of himself as the creator of QC in his LiveJournal. So far, so good.

In response, Jacques posts a VERY NSFW drawing of Willis being fucked by a dog and sucking a guy's cock. Without an LJ-cut. There is now an ETA stating (bolding his):

dear everyone bitching about how I should've put this behind a cut because bawwww I look at LJ at work and almost got in trouble waaaawwwwww

Maybe you shouldn't be looking at livejournal at work

And lo and behold, there are indeed many comments requesting a cut, and just as many making fun of those who did.

Willis responds with an equally NSFW drawing of Jacques eating poo right from the source. And it all goes downhill from there.

There is bonus discussion in the comments on Jacques' incorrect use of terminology, as he states that Willis is a dogfucker, but he's clearly being depicted as being fucked by a dog.

Also, beware of guro macros in the comments.

Transfanboys wanking? Dull Surprise.

[info]kookaburra
So, we've all seen the heights of frothiness that Transformers fans can reach, but what about the fanboys' fanboys?

First, Matt Moylan of the webcomic Lil' Formers posts a comic comparing the various incarnations of Optimus Prime.

Then, David Willis of Shortpacked! satirizes Matt's comic in one of his own.

Cue fanboy outrage, in both blogs of the involved artists. Multiple times.

And in the tfwiki.net talk page for Matt Moylan.

And in the wikipedia.net talk page for David Willis.

The heights of impotent nerd rage their fans reach on behalf of people with careers most of the fans would punch an elderly relative for is pretty hilarious.

[info]kaen
Over in scans_daily today there was a post containing a recent xkcd strip about Nice Guys (TM).

Cue two-hundred comments worth of people arguing about whether people who makes friends with someone just in the hopes of eventually dating them are just shy and insecure, or if they're manipulative assholes.

It's not the most vicious wank in the world, but it does contain the occasional gem like:

"People like that need insulting if it helps them stop acting that way."

"Well, some say the same about women who keep staying in relationships where they get beaten."

LEAVE B^U ALONE!

[info]hypno_jango
Bringing this over from [info]clairvoyantwank

On Wednesday, Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation decided to ditch outraging gamers by mocking their favorite video games for the week to instead criticize webcomics and their creators. While Yahtzee took jabs at webcomics in general, his main focus was on the webcomic Ctrl-Alt-Delete. (Note: On Wednesday, Ctrl-Alt-Delete's forums went down and they are still not up.) At the Escapist's forum, there are 24 pages of Pro-CAD VS Anti-CAD fanboy rage.

On a fun note: The first webcomic replying to the video.

Fail mods are failing

[info]sepiamagpie
Dearest, beloved, Fandom Wank.

I know you were looking forward to great excitement today. Some of you said words to me that indicated you anticipated fiery 'judgement' upon those who remained fresh and dewey white, those you call n00bs.

Anyway, you got today instead.

Stop anticipating things, we'll just break your hearts.

Sincerely,

Sepia P. Magpie, Esq.

PS: Use this post to reflect on how you could be better people. Or just fuck around in the comments.

"I'm glad I f--- my doll"

lolcoholic
Originally on Stupid Free .

The WoW webcomic, Looking for Group, features a elven hunter named Cale'Anon.  princess_magpie runs  friends_of_lfg, and is a big fan of Cale'Anon. She makes fanart, T-shirts for each day of the week, and...dolls.  Large dolls. Almost life-size dolls.

Whatever could she do with a couple of almost life-size dolls, you ask? Well, she likes to hug them alot, for starters.

It turns out she likes to do a lot more with them.  One day, the LJ comm nonwiccanwitch got an introductory post from a saraphyx .

I have an elven spirit lover, whom I have been with since I was seventeen. He is my guide and protector, and I also consider him my familiar spirit, because he helps me with my magic.

In saraphyx's journal, there is a once public, but now locked, post  where she describes her lover as an anatomically correct doll. Since the doll post was public when saraphyx made her nonwiccanwitch post, the comments lol at discuss this.

ETA: [info]white_serpent found a cache of the post  here.  Crappily screencapped by me here.

A fae_lord appears to defend saraphyx.  Oh look, he has a Cale'Anon icon.  Could this be saraphyx's elven lover? Why yes, it is!

Both journals were made on April 1st,  so people naturally call troll.  However, there is the matter of princess_magpie and the Cale'Anon doll posts.  skullard , a mod for another LfG comm,  confirms that  saraphyx is indeed princess_magpie, and has a long history of batshit.  So much for the troll idea, then.

The crazy contiues past April Fool's as fae_lord makes his own post to tell everyone off for being so meeeeean to his love.

nonwiccanwitch fills itself with wank posts on the subject.

Flounce:  I'm glad to be me.  I'm glad I f--- my doll, and I'm glad I'm alive.  Take me or leave me.

Unflounce.  The practice I use in which I communicate with my guardian is not so unusual;  for a start, there's something called 'soulbonding,'

ETA: saraphyx's new comm: spirit_lovers. Snapewives need invites Y/Y?

"Lie Bot, what is the saddest wank?"

[info]solle
Today's Achewood really isn't all that different from the usual storylines, only not entirely as coherent as some people would like. It's also incredibly sad.

So predictably, people get their panties in a bunch.

Oh my God I am drunk but seriously you are cunts for being so amazingly analytical of this strip. )

Smallish for now, but plenty more in the comments, and still ongoing. No recipes yet, sadly.

These web comic reviews are so bad

[info]tunxeh

Gunnerkrigg Court is an ongoing (and excellent) online graphic-novel bildungsroman, set in a world that mixes magic, gods, and high tech. Each new strip has a comment thread (vanishing when the next strip goes up, thrice weekly) with usually quite civil and incisive commentary. But in the comment thread for today's strip, someone links to a review from a couple weeks ago on the blog "these web comics are so bad", attempting to make fun of GK by misinterpreting the "court" in the title and putting the heroine on trial. As a special bonus, the review incorporates bad emo free verse:

The attempted humor of this review falls flat, as its earliest commenters already agree. But once GK's fans find the comment thread for the review, it quickly becomes a bashfest. A few of the more printable and non-tl;dr responses:

ETA: Cormorant pointed me in email to another thread about the same webcomic review site.

Look well! This is how a true otaku wanks!

[info]sparkthatbled
Hoboy, is this gonna be a hard one. First time poster here, folks. Be gentle?

On the blog of anime webcomic Mistakes of Youth, a comic is released on November 3rd that shows just what artist/creator wildarmsheero's thinks of the latest series in the Gundam franchise, Gundam 00:

Sunrise has finally done it. As of right now, I will not watch any new Gundam show ever again. It's not so much that Gundam 00 is totally fucking horrible (though there is that, too) but the franchise has strayed so far from what made it good. Everything from the terrible opening and ending tracks to the sickening male character designs just makes me want to puke. It also doesn't help that it only took 2 episodes for the story to just get fucking boring and bogged down with line upon line of horrid dialogue. So yeah, goodbye Gundam. It's been fun, but now it's done. I'll just stick to old UC series from now on.

Whilst there is a little bit of wank in the comments on the blog entry, it's not until the very next post that wildarmsheero truly lets the wank fly, where he rages against the anime fans who enjoy Gundam 00 and the various shows like it:

This does it: the comments are immediatley filled with srs bsns and thoughts on yaoi Gundam. Whilst everyone tries to stay off flaming, there's enough srs bsns enough to float the Yamato.

But then DarkMirage initiates his counterattack on his blog in response, accusing wildarmsheero of being a sad nostalga freak!
No, YOUR taste in Anime sucks! And so does your 2D fictional wife! )

Anime bloggers are pussies! )

You're a loser who buys pillowcases with anime girls on it! )
You're no man! You're just a geek who humps pillows! )

But that's not all! Just when it seemed that Ashley's flame had left him on the ropes, wildarmsheero comes back with his ultimate attack:
HISSATSU: SUPER MANLY PODCAST POWER!! )
HISSATSU: SUPER MANLY PODCAST PWNAGE!! )

[info]wankaholic
Something*Positive: where no one comes out smelling like roses. Moved from [info]clairvoyantwank.

One of the main rules of LJ's Something*Positive feed is that you do not point out typos or other mistakes in the feed itself. It annoys the artist (Randy) to no end—he would prefer that you e-mail him mistakes instead.

Of course, not everyone knows this. Some people are jerks about it; Randy, in particular, gets pissed.

Pissed enough to post to the feed about it. Reactions are mixed, at first—the usual, "Please don't delete the feed!" and whatnot.

Then someone makes a comparison to Anne Rice, and suddenly, it's okay to criticize.

Accusations of having a "diva" attitude, of being told to grow the fuck up, and other plesantries abound, until both sides manage to make themselves look like complete idiots. Fun all around!

[info]seiberwing
On page 1066 of the bighuge RPG.net image thread, a comic page is posted that mocks what is, in the words of Ciaphas Cane, "a really shitty webcomic".

Through the magic of interwebs, the author Bobby Crosby shows up and takes offense.

I am original! )

He and Bobby go back and forth for three or so pages attempting to disprove each others' points until the wank merits its own thread. Bobby continues to be amazing.

Very very original! )

Then Bobby got banned for a month and the thread degenerates into random banter.

EDIT: Apparently this is neither his first first nor second wank offense.

SECOND EDIT: And now he's wanking on GAFF.
