Bradbury/Moore wank update
I know that BBC just got us all with that three-headed frog thing, but I still trust them more than WingnutDaily, and they're reporting the Bradbury/Moore kerfuffle as true.

Bradbury said he would rather avoid litigation and is "hoping to settle this as two gentlemen, if he'll shake hands with me and give me back my book and title".

I'm sure he rather would avoid litigation, since he'd have to get the omg intarnet lawyer.

(Notice how bravely I'm acting as though everything's fine, although Everything's Changed.)

Oh, Ray. Don't let the spirit of Harlan Ellison possess you!

Still, I'd be all in favor if he'd said he wanted to settle it like two gentleman.

With a pistol duel at sunset!

Hereafter be it known by all and sundry that teh internet lawyer (points to icon) admires ur bravery and courageousnessness and is following the case, very interested to see if Moore gets his ass kicked or Bradbury just gives up rather than go to court.

"if he'll shake hands with me and give me back my book and title"

Wow, I totally missed the part where Michael Moore stole Ray Bradbury's manuscript, plus fifty years of galleys and proofs and whatnot, and then hired a bunch of people to go around to houses and libraries and confiscate everyone's copies of The Book That Cannot Be Named Because Michael Moore Stole the Title, God Damn It. Shouldn't the BBC be reporting on that instead? :D

I would so watch that if it was a TV show. "Tonight on Intellectual Property Ninja: Michael Moore tries to steal the US Constitution and replace it with....soap!"

Every week Ray Bradbury and teh Intarweb lawyer hunt Moore down to a different place in the world but he gives them the slip by wearing a red wig.

I smell Emmies!

Oh wait. That's not an Emmy. Ew.

Ray, Ray, Ray. I love you dearly, but last time I checked (which was, admittedly, a while back), as long as the content isn't ripped off, you can't copyright a title. I could write a novel entitled Fahrenheit 451 about a broiler whose thermostat is a little off-kilter, and you could scream "OMG PLAGERIZM" till you were blue in the face. And that's about all you could do.

Don't wank, Ray. Please don't wank.

I checked relatively recently and that was still the case. Titles remain up for grabs until someone gets a trademark (like "Sesame Street"), most authors will try to avoid exact same titles to spare themselves confusion, but intertextuality/allusion/parody do not require permission.

That's just ... rilly rilly stoopid, Ray. Aside from the fact that it's not even the SAME (duh!), does the word "hommage" ring any bells?
