Short of JF offering free accounts to any and everyone, I don't think there's much that can be done. I doubt blocking IPs would do much good and you can only do it after the fact...

Right, and blocking IPs can only be done at an administrative level, by either ZR or Robin.

Isn't there still that comm on LJ that offers JF accounts? Why not publicize that again?

However, I don't think that there's anything that f_w can do by itself....

Is it possible to collect IPs of repeat spammers and ask the owners of JF to ban them? Or to implement captchas, which may cut down on spam? Or to screen all anonymous comments?

Good call. We'll do that.

The IPs seem to be really varied, but we can ask. The captchas would have to be implemented site-wide, I think, and that would be a problem for [info]lol_meme (I don't know if they're having a spambot problem, or if it's just wank comms).

Screening anon comments could work - then it would be up to the individual wank poster to unscreen them.

This may be a stupid idea- but would it be possible to add (for the 'anonymous' posting option) one of those 'enter these letters to prove you're human' boxes? It's just a simple generation script, right? *has no idea*

If it's applied all over the site it would kill the lol_meme though.

I wonder if it would be possible to design it as an option that communities can turn on or off. I can't think of a reason why not, but then I know nothing about scripts.

Those can be read by a lot spambots simply using OCR. The annoyance will be high, the visually impaired users will be left in the dust and the effect on the spammers might be negligible.

How about disallowing anonymous comments from containing URLs at all? Some time ago the LJ code changed so that HTML links get changed to boldface non-link with the URL displayed in parentheses as non-clickable text, but apparently that doesn't discourage the spammers.

It looks like it mostly happens in older posts -- is there any way for mods to turn off anon in individual posts after a certain amount of time, or would the OP have to do that?

Is there any way to get openID working on here? I know that's a more technical solution, but it would allow for non-anon commenting without accounts.

Can someone else screen comment if the OP goes to bed? Living in the UK means I can’t always keep up with comments. I like the kitten verification idea, with screening.

*was once anon and with posting off, it’s like having your nose pressed against a toy shop window with no money.

Implementing OpenID would help, as it would let LJers comment here non-anonymously without having to get an account.

Didn't someone mention before something about a username that was passed back and forth between the anonymice, where they got it for a day and all that?

But then, that does sort of open it up to people too young to be on JF, too, doesn't it?

:/ Well, so far I like the "turn anonymous commenting off on a particular post after X days" best, but I'm not sure how effective it would be...

What about captchas... but only for anon comments that contain a link? That would let most [info]lol_meme comments through uncontested.

Of course that wouldn't catch all of them but it should get most.

(What is up with the ones that don't even have a link or say the name of the site?)

I'm unsure whether this should go here or to the livejournal dev team, but perhaps it would be best to do what anonymous message boards do for spam bots.

Impliment a hidden text-entry field that a bot would fill out, but humans wouldn't. Bot fills out field, bot can't submit text.
