Fandom Wank has now been placed on post moderation due to excessive trolling. A one-liner idiot post where everyone can have some snarky fun in the comments is perhaps mildly tolerated once, repeated offensive attacks is another thing. All posts have now been deleted.

One of the reasons for moderation is that due to the trolling [info]zorrorojo has removed account creation. There should be no reason that the behavior of a few should spoil it for everyone. (Although there are those who might say the same thing about FW in comparison to fandom.)

Having posts on moderation would stop any sort of trolling like that occuring again and enable accounts to stay open. It might also cause people to be a little more cautious and thoughtful before posting a wank: perhaps taking the time to fully explore it's potential, writing it up clearly or not rushing so much to be the first to get a post up that the original content is removed before any wank actually occurs.

We're taking these steps to stop this type of trolling from occuring again, it doesn't have to be a dramatic change to community. We'll try to unscreen wanks as quickly as we can and keep things running smoothly. In the case of two screened posts reporting the same wank, the mods will pick the one that is more complete.

Thoughts?

I'm only comfortable with this if the mods don't take it upon themselves to decide what is and isn't a "worthy" wank. I don't think its the mods' job to do that; that's the entire community's job.

Just stick to rejecting ONLY obvious troll posts and duplicates, and I'm happy.

Yeah, I was just about to post the exact same sentiment. I'm cool with modding for non-wank-reporting posts like the trolls, but, uh, what's a "fully explored wank?"

I'm guessing that it means they'll choose the post linking to the most material if there are duplicates.

I'm echoing some of the sentiments expressed. As a stop gap measure for the moment, it won't kill us to have the entries approved. Yeah, prime wank might pass us by but really, there is so much out there, in the grand scheme, will it truly be missed?

Just as mods will do on BB and ML, sometimes imposing a moratorium to allow tempers to cool in a flame war, this little bit of time down will frustrate trollers because they can't have their 'instant gratification' of 'ha! I sure showed them' moments. Or at least, that is my take on it.

They might hang out in the wings and what not, but trolls being the ever so lazy creatures they care, will eventually bore of waiting for the chance to spring out from under their bridge and seek out more profitable avenues with which to slake their troll-lust.

Mneh. I really don't like the thought of f_w being moderated that heavily. First, the idea of having the mods screen every single post makes me kind of wary. It seems ripe for the possibility of abuse, both in moderating for the quality of the wank, to the possibility that some mod might not approve of wank that makes them look bad. While I don't really think it's all that likely, well, I don't see any particular reason to tempt people. Secondly, part of the appeal of f_w (to me at least) has always been how little moderation it has. THis seems like it's going to make f_w more formal, and that just isn't any fun. Third, there is going to be a delay in unscreening posts, and I have to admit, I'm not all that thrilled about that.

My personal preference would be for simply heavier moderation and just deleting trolls when they show up, or maybe screening new members until they;ve proved themselves not to be blatant trolls. This just seems like too extreme a measure to be taken for just a minor inconvenience.

(Long-winded, who? Me? Nah. ^^;)

No, I'm afraid I personally don’t agree with this move. It seems too much power is being vested in the hands of too few. All you have to do is delete or lock (or even mock if they're short ones) any further troll posts which is what Zorro did initially anyway. It's far too much of a knee-jerk reaction to one troll and I see it as giving her a victory in some sense.

Also, I've posted a wank for the latest fandomquibbler article half an hour ago so I'm hoping you'll unscreen it soon.

ETA: Looks like someone jumped the queue over me with that wank. Hmm.

You don't, as far as I know, though the admins could probably change it by editing the source code for any page stored on their system. I actually had my post above written long before I submitted it. Hence my ETA comment.

Ok, I'm looking at this logically. Firstly will these regs put a brake on idiot trolls and cause Zorro and Robin less migraines - in the short term? Yes. Long term, it's simply impractical.

Secondly will this curb the minority posting product for the overwhelming majority to throw tomatoes at, make dumb jokes and silly comments? No.

So my answer is on the one hand - whatever, I'll live... Though on the other my heart screams to say:

OMG wunt sumbodiez th1nk of TEH fr33SPE4CHiez!!!1

Because this is a time for indulgent cliches and talk of rationing and the terrorists winning and everybody being arm-flappingly irate and serious.

Actually, about that, didn't Zorro say they were implementing new things to stop the trolling? Cause maybe we should wait for that to happen, and see what said measures are, before anything is decided for definite.

Seeing as what the text-trolls have been after is bringing the servers down via overload (and there the 'EV1L will crrrrrrrumbleeeeee! Bwahahaha!'), 'cause they can't get that quick and sticky TOS satisfaction.

So what I'm saying is anything that puts the mokkas on idiot trolls has a positive effect on server influx and on the comm. It's mutually beneficial to all concerned and I can't understand why a lot of people are panicking and screaming woe.

Ok, moderation'll create a new post lag BUT considering most f_w threads are active for days at a time - is that really going to cause a point & mock lag?

Just think of the added orgy time, the circus marquees, the anonymouse go-go dancing and most importantly the development of new in-jokes!

But if trolls are a problem and interefering with the purpose of the community, steps must be taken. I'm prepared to wait and see how much it really changes the nature of f_w - if it even really does.

Ummm, I think this is a very, very bad idea.

For one - think of how many members this comm has and how many posts you'll probably be dealing with per minute. Are you *trying* to kill your mods?

For another, Mod-Approved Posting communities are wanky in and of themselves. I thought Deletegate/Wankpocalypse got all that excess splooge out of our systems, yo!

I can totally understand the desire to curb the trolling, but I reallyreallyreeeeaaaally don't think this is a good solution.

I like the idea of active policing - like another poster here suggested. If you can't delete specific comments, then go for posts. You find any post that comes up gets trolled to the point of intolerability, or if a post is trollishly offensive, delete it. *shrugs* If the original poster can't deal, that's their problem.

Oh - and get more mods. Any less than 10 for a community as large as f_w seems to be too little, in my view. *shrugs*

I'd like to point out that in actuality, the number posts per day on average (which is under 10 without doing any math--in the past YEAR, there has never been over 8 posts on F_W in a single day) is nowhere NEAR the number of community members, so that's not really an issue worth worrying about.

That may be so, but just look at the near-kerfluffle that we had over the recent fandom_quibbler wank. One post got passed over for another, and there was anger over that.

I really don't think this plan will work as anything other than a *very* temporary measure, and I still think that there are better ways of preventing trolling.

Weighing in as another person who doesn't like the idea. I can understand wanting to keep an eye on the posts for a while to make sure the troll doesn't pop up again, but I am vehemently against using this as a long-term solution. In my opinion, mods should only have the power to step in and remove obvious and overly obnoxious trolls, like the recent one. Screening every single post and judging it's wank worthiness is completely out of the question, to me. That's always been the job of thw whole communites, and I much prefer it that way.

So, I'm looking at this from the troll's point of view, which was to bring down F_W. And s/h/it hasn't accomplished that, BUT they HAVE accomplished a potentially major alteration. From this side of fence, the troll has accomplished something.

When ignoring a troll doesn't work, banning them from the community is another option. I see no reason to play into the troll's delusions of grandeur when all the troll wants is attention.
