Fandom Wank has now been placed on post moderation due to excessive trolling. A one-liner idiot post where everyone can have some snarky fun in the comments is perhaps mildly tolerated once, repeated offensive attacks is another thing. All posts have now been deleted.

One of the reasons for moderation is that due to the trolling [info]zorrorojo has removed account creation. There should be no reason that the behavior of a few should spoil it for everyone. (Although there are those who might say the same thing about FW in comparison to fandom.)

Having posts on moderation would stop any sort of trolling like that occuring again and enable accounts to stay open. It might also cause people to be a little more cautious and thoughtful before posting a wank: perhaps taking the time to fully explore it's potential, writing it up clearly or not rushing so much to be the first to get a post up that the original content is removed before any wank actually occurs.

We're taking these steps to stop this type of trolling from occuring again, it doesn't have to be a dramatic change to community. We'll try to unscreen wanks as quickly as we can and keep things running smoothly. In the case of two screened posts reporting the same wank, the mods will pick the one that is more complete.

Thoughts?

I nominate <lj user="elfy=> to cover AEST. I'm sure she'd be responsible. Unless, y'know, someone pissed her off.

(Pst. Your LJ tag's screwed up. :) I'll repost:

Y'know, that brings up an interesting possibility. Would the accusations of Cabal-ness be less if f_wers could vote on (new) mods? Or am I corrrect in assuming that He-Who-Was-Smited-By-The-JF-Gods-Themselves was the only one who took the whole Cabal thing actually seriously?

P-wossface got that bone and worried it to death but I was also cheesed off over Delete-gate etc... Community-wide voting in of the new mods would go far towards restoring a bit of trust, I think. Especially if the new people are NOT members of any invite-only wank comms.

Yeah, and according to P, Cabal = anyone who'd ever seen a mod/"oldbie" and to some, Cabal = anyone who's been vocal on f_w for more than six months, so I'm confused abut how we'd decide who's "outside" the Cabal in the first place. (Also, the Cabal accusations predate the invite-only comm, and I don't think anyone should be excluded from modship because we're members there. Especially as that'd exclude a lot of the more experienced members, who would logically be the better choice as mods, I think.)

I dunno, I'm just thinking out loud, here. I do think perhaps giving the members at large more of a voice in the mod process would be a good thing, and would probably help get people behind the mods if and when they do get stricter about enforcing the rules. But, as [info]apoplexia said below, popularity rule isn't necessarily a good thing, either.

Maybe ask for volunteers for new mods and then have an open discussion about wether or not to make them mods in here, with current mods having the final say?

I have no problem with letting the community at large pick some more mods, but I'm totally unwilling to give the power to someone I don't know and trust. If we do pick more mods, I'd say both fw_debate consensus and the existing mods should have veto power.

That'd be a good idea, I think. That way, we get someone who's both competent and has the popular support.

Man, I cannot believe how much I suck at doing tags manually. Thank you.

As a cabal member, I have to say that I'm not convinced by the people's republic of f_w. If you're going to make being a mod a popularity contest, then that's no better than simply having us select our own. I do think that it would be a good idea to have a couple of mods from outside the cabal, but a vote? That's not very nefarious! Couldn't we just pick a patsy? Like, say, [types very carefully] [info]ashenmote?

Ultimately, it's up to the current mods to decide, of course. We've made our preferences known, but this isn't really a democracy (good god, a democracy composed entirely of snarky, bitter Fandom_Wankers? The mind boggles.)

Personally, I consider the entire Cabal vs non-Cabal debate to be missing the point -- we'd need competent and trustworthy mods, not token ones. Mods who understand how F_W works, who can be trusted not to get heavy-handed, who don't have major pre-existing conflicts with other users, and especially ones who don't have a history of wankish behaviour outside the comm (we really don't need some HP or LotR or anime wanker with overt loyalties as a gatekeeper for F_W, right?)

Which is not a vote against my valued minion [info]ashenmote, though. He's my left-hand man, after all. He might very well be a good choice, though he has had some conflict with certain current mods. It's not a vote at all...just an analysis to point out that the primary criteria should have little to do with the cliques and anti-cliques.

Of course, we could just turn it into a wankish popularity contest. That seems somehow...appropriate.

Actually, I agree with that. I find the idea of a Cabal to be rather silly, especially a Cabal with me in it, for god's sake.

I was going to say that it matters to a number of members who might feel more inclined to see the mod team as benevolent (and lazy, heh) dictators rather than Cruel Oppressors Of Teh Newbies if they'd get more of a vote in the mod-election process, but then it occured to me, how many people actually do think there's this Cabal where a bunch of us decide how to run the world/f_w/JF/whatever?

No-one, apart from [types very carefully] [info]anatsuno knows who I am. And they certainly find it more difficult to draw my breasts from memory than yours. Therefore I should be a mod. I promise not to delete F_W. Again.

Wait, ashenmote is male?

Hmm. If f_w were really a democracy, would we even have mods? (How did they get stuff done in 5th century BC Athens, anyway, once they were finished voting? Cyclical appointments?) Although for what it's worth, a community the size of f_w is probably one of the few that could concievably function as a radical democracy, if we weren't all such obstinate assholes.

I do think that f_w has been around long enough that we can find experienced, competant mods among members of more recent vintage than the LJ or Blurty days, and who aren't necessarily Close Personal Friends of the current mods. I wouldn't exclude "Cabal" members from consideration, but I see no reason to limit our choices to them, anyway. (Whoever they are. Who are they, anyway? I cannot fucking keep track.) All I would really hope for--aside from competant, active, and geographically disparate enough that not all of them live in the same time zone--is that there would be enough diversity of opinion among the mods that the next time someone decides to delete f_w "just for funsies" someone else says "let's not."

The thing is, though, how do you define "Cabal"? Because if Cabal = Sikrit Com Members, that's rather arbitrary, I think, especially since the Cabal accusations were brewing before the com was ever created.

Yeah, popularity rule isn't something I'm keen on, either, but what's the alternative? :/

My supremely complicated solution:
[info]ladybirdsleeps
2004-10-21 06:31 pm UTC (link)
Open a thread in f_w and ask for people to nominate candidates for new mod. Disregard nominations only if the person doesn't want to be mod, is a troll, or is objected to by comm members for some reason (like being a stupid wanker).

Create a private entry in someone's journal. In the comments to that entry (because you can't spoof the times of or edit comments), assign everyone who's in the running a number.

Create a poll entry in f_w. Create a poll for each six candidates, with radio buttons numbered from 1 to 6. Tell f_w members to roll a die to pick a number for each poll. The number who gets the most votes goes to the next round. (In the case of the numbers being the same, create a new comment in the private entry to reassign one of the people a new number.)

Continue this until only x number of new mods is standing. Then unlock the private entry so that the comments with the numbers are visible.

Or ...

... umm ... you could just hire me.
