Fandom Wank has now been placed on post moderation due to excessive trolling. A one-liner idiot post where everyone can have some snarky fun in the comments is perhaps mildly tolerated once, repeated offensive attacks is another thing. All posts have now been deleted.

One of the reasons for moderation is that due to the trolling [info]zorrorojo has removed account creation. There should be no reason that the behavior of a few should spoil it for everyone. (Although there are those who might say the same thing about FW in comparison to fandom.)

Having posts on moderation would stop any sort of trolling like that occuring again and enable accounts to stay open. It might also cause people to be a little more cautious and thoughtful before posting a wank: perhaps taking the time to fully explore it's potential, writing it up clearly or not rushing so much to be the first to get a post up that the original content is removed before any wank actually occurs.

We're taking these steps to stop this type of trolling from occuring again, it doesn't have to be a dramatic change to community. We'll try to unscreen wanks as quickly as we can and keep things running smoothly. In the case of two screened posts reporting the same wank, the mods will pick the one that is more complete.

Thoughts?

I'm sorry, this is the debate comm. I should give a reason for immediately disliking this idea.

Mainly, it's because I think it would discourage people from getting accounts. We get a fair number of people who've been wanked coming over here to defend themselves, and I loathe not being able to tell anonymice apart (I can, of course, thanks to IP, but you can't). Requiring a mod to approve admittance to the community would add a step to a process that's already to enough to keep people from bothering to respond to one entry. Also, these two are the first trolls we've ever had with obvious nomenclature; in fact, three quarters of them were existing members who turned to the dark side. Finally, locking down new posts until we can check them instead of locking down new members until we can check them keeps us an open community. You know if we had to permit new members to join we'd be accused of being a closed community.

To extend your logic, though, if moderating people who join would discourage people from getting accounts, wouldn't moderating posts discourage people from posting?

Yes. But those people don't join to post new entries, they join to post comments. I'd rather have more restrictive entry posting than more restrictive membership.

Now that I think of it, of course, you don't actually need to be a member to comment in FW.
