Are we allowed to link to sites on the internet where people have posted their own full names? Um, I assume so, because there's nothing against it in the rules, and I did it during Russet Doom without rebuke, but I've got a couple Myspace pages that have been implicated in wank, and they display last names, and I'd rather err on the side of caution.

If they have posted their names public, I don't see the problem - it's public. But giving out personal details that were not given out by the person in question for all to see is a different matter entirely.

Someone publicly giving out their full name on the internet is their own decision. Digging up further information like a stalker, however, would be a no-no, as is anyone here using their personal details to affect their real life(calling their place of work, school, etc).

That's the way I see it anyway. I mean, if we didn't allow it, we'd never have the craziness of Cassie Cla(i)re.

A mouse reported a psueicide to [info]wank_report, and apparently someone ferreted enough info from Facebook/Myspace (real name, location, school) to call the supposedly dead teen's school administrators.

I decided to go ahead and post it to [info]fandom_wank, and I tried to make the point that the phone call is generally taking it a bit far for wankas to get away with.

At best, I could see it possibly being acceptable IF the "internet detective" was vague and just asked if there had been any recent incidents with any students, not HEY GUYS HAVE YOU HEARD OF SO-AND-SO DYING ON THE INTERNET LOLZ?!

The "dead" girl has a new Myspace, and one of her recent posts was "[insert name here] is dead, at least that's what someone told my principal."

Of course, that and the anon post to wank_report are the only places I can find reference to this, and I instinctively distrust straight-from-the-wanker's mouth and anonymice.

The glowing terms in which the anon described the investigation ("fighting against the refusal to provide an obituary!" zomg!) leads me to believe 1) the mouse is the one who called the school, and 2) the mouse is pretty wanky too.

Also, the mouse had included a lot of really irrelevant info (like links to years-old xangas that had nothing to do with the current situation), so I think someone just wanted to feel like a super!internet!detective, and didn't know where to draw the line.
