I think it's the "permission" and the "few" that make me leery. I personally don't want to have to start adjudicating what posts are good off-topic and what posts just aren't suitable, because I have little doubt people will start trying to use f_w as a sounding board and promotional device at some point if that door is opened, and while it all sounds nice in theory, I don't think actual practice will be quite so pretty. And I definitely don't look forward to the inevitable wank when even one person is rejected and decides to bitch about omg, teh_meen urpressurs! Active modding has its limits with a community like f_w. It's really the reason fandom_lounge, otf_wank, politicalwank, fandom_rant, et cetera were created -- to avoid the issue of what do do with off-topic or inappropriate posts. Compartmentalization has its advantages, advantages that I think outweigh the negatives.

While you're perfectly right about fandom_lounge not having f_w's readership, this isn't for lack of available information about its existence. It's on the user-info page, after all, and has been promoted in mod posts to f_w in the past.

Just my two cents there. I advised cleo to go the fandom_lounge/flist whoring route myself.

	Oh, and one other point: wank about given charity posts is not only possible, but inevitable with f_w's members. The first "I'm not buying this, it's a scam" versus "omg, u bitch, how dare you not believe me?!?" flame war would not be long in coming, methinks. And coming. And coming.... 	I had a close friend decide she couldn't hang out here because it seemed trollish and mean. I dunno, lately a lot of the people commenting do seem to have this illusion they don't wank (and don't even get me started on how seriously everyone takes FW, I mean... 	Yeah, this is the fandom version of gallows humor for me. If it weren't for teh funneh on F_W, I'd run away from my fandoms screaming. I also know that I can be quite wanky. You have good points. Sometimes I forget about that whole "self-modding" philosophy.

I don't think there's any good way to allow off-topic posts without some sort of mod involvement. Even if it was based on consensus in fw_debate, some mod would inevitably be called on to decide what a consensus is or to delete something that was posted even though people were against it.

So I'm going to go heat up some hot chocolate and read gay porn now.

Pretty much... yeah. There are plenty of other things we can do, though--I'll post again in fandom_lounge with updated information, and people who read that comm (and are willing to help) can post about it in their JFs, which will catch more of the FW/JF population in general. Seriously, the last thing I want out of this is to create more wank. I mean, there will inevitably be wank about this, so let's minimize it from the start, if possible.
