I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before (though damned if I can find the link right now), but can we please turn off anon commenting, at least for the time being?

I used to be one of the more vocal defenders of leaving it on, but in the last month or so, the cons have started to outweigh the pros. Right now, it seems like the majority of the anon posts are twits trying to stir up wank and flamewars in-comm, and while I used to enjoy the occasional in-house wank, enough is enough already. I also think a lot of the anons lately post anon not because they simply don't have an account, but because they can get away with things like encouraging borderline, if not outright, trolling without the risk of being banned, or even without the risk of making an arse out of themselves and suffering the social consequences (so to speak), as someone with an account would.

I'll miss the good anons, but a) they're really not worth the agrravation anymore, and b) if push comes to shove, I will shell out the $5 and buy them an account, if they want to stay. I know this also eliminates anon wank tipoffs, but people are annoyed about that anyway, and if the wank is funny enough, it'll get posted without help.

Thoughts, anyone?

I'm going to go get some coffee and laugh myself sick over the irony.

I just wanted to say that I'm with you on this one. It's gone quite beyond funny at this point and I'm really getting sick of the anonymous anti-us brigade invading every post and screaming about the cabal and injustice or whatever the flavour of the week is.

i've been a supporter of anon posting in the past but now i'm finally sick to fucking death of them.

when they're posting just to troll and get away with being blatantly abusive, it's not on. they're not funny, they're not snarky, and i'm pretty damn sure there's a bunch of them who are f_w journal-owning regulars who are too fucking spineless to make their comments logged in under their own name because they're scared they'll get banned.

i say ban the fuckers.

i'm sure there porbably are funny ones out there, but i sure as hell can't remember any from the past few weeks amidst all the trolling and dismal lack of anything even remotely entertaining, so i'm not going to miss them.

I am inclined to agree with everything you say, as...um. It's true.

On the other hand...that gets ugly. As free account creation is disabled, for the time being...that precludes our "features" from joining up unless they have an account. And forcing them to pay money just so they can say "Well, I'm not as much of a shitslinging cunt as you think I am!" is unfair to them.

That the process, IIRC, isn't automatic isn't a point in favor of this.

I mean, part of the reason wanking minors is banned is because they're unable to get accounts here. While, technically, turning off anon commenting and leaving it at that doesn't conflict with that...it just casts Fandom Wank and Journalfen in a bad light, as now you have to jump through hoops to get your say in.

I remember a few months ago that Metafilter had a limited number of free signups each day, before they changed to the same system that Something Awful uses. (One-time fee - though they call it a donation at MeFi.) Maybe something like that - and limit it to one account per IP per whatever time period...maybe a month? Two weeks?

I say yes, ban anons...but also make an account more accessible to those that don't have them. (Emphasis on account. Not accounts, as then you get namehoarding, and that makes the baby Jesus cry. As well as Zorro and Robin.)

Are there other trolls that I missed, or something? I see one that's quite obviously a troll, but the others were just giving us a MUCH DESERVED prod for that ridiculous FW convulsion over intros.

Unless there are other trolls, I'd disagree with turning of anon commenting. Because if it's comments like this that you're thinking of, well ... I think that's completely out of line with the spirit of FW.

I'm still against turning off anon commenting for all the same reasons I was against it before. Plus, there are definitely funny and intelligent mice out there.

But, strangely enough, I can't seem to bring myself to care enough to argue the point right now. Especially when a couple of the mice are obviously f_w members with an axe to grind -- an axe that apparently slipped in their grasp and cut off their balls. And the other one is just a troll. Fuck it. Not gonna defend anon commenting when it's trolling, pure and simple.

I do think it's important to give subjects of wanks a chance to respond, but surely we can work something else out? Maybe provide them an email address to send email to, and a mod will post the email as a comment in the wank? ... nah, too much work. I've got nothing.

I'm of two minds on this.

I figure a number of anonymice are actual users who don't want spooge on their face (unlike me who can be spotted by the permabukkake) or don't want fallout from within their fandoms. I'm also in my little wiigaawam getting annoyed by mice saying "[info]penisape is trolling [Bad username: feminazi_shoppingcarts]! [info]vagina_vikings post more about subject here!" in a post about wanky Inuyasha cosplayers fighting over why guys can't be Kagome.

On the other hand, someone gets wanked and wants to rebut. They don't want to pony up the money to create an account for six months because they don't want to waste server space for something they're not going to use. Their intention is to just come in here and defend themself and their position. "Hello, this that and the other (vagina_viking on LJ)." Killing the anonymice could choke off discussion or a whole lot of entertainment. A few professed "former mice" proudly state they got accounts after lurking or mousing.

I think it's more important to maintain the uh, "integrity" (quit laughing, back there!) of the community by getting rid of all the shitty, obnoxious, and desperately unfunny trolls than it is to give wanked ones a forum to respond. Is it just me? It seems like very few of the anons are wankers defending themselves, and most are just around to annoy in the least amusing way they can manage. Doesn't seem worth the irritation.

And that's all that matters, damn you! Stamping out things that irritate me!

I suggest this, we turn off the commenting *for now* just for a little while at least until the trolls are gone and in the meantime work on a way to make accounts more accessible so that the people who want to join can.

And maybe we should put up a poll of some kind, have everyone interested vote and then work from there.

I think the problem isn't the anonymice- I think there needs to be a Radical Regime Change™~!

Well, maybe. It might be more work than it's worth, but I think the reason so many people get upset over people like [info]bubosquared and [info]funkyhelix "self-modding" is because they appear to be good friends with the mods and, whether real or imagined, "hold more sway" in an official sort of way.

There's nothing wrong with them having a higher say than we thronging masses, but a lot of the wangst would be avoided if everyone who likes to speak up and is close to the mods/an oldbie/OMG CABAL would be given an official title and official powers.

Of course, "self-modding" is a dangerous and unwieldy way to manage a community~ it devalues the power of the mods, and empowers would-be wankers to stand up and spit at people they find annoying. It's my entirely valueless opinion that self-moderation is a bad thing. Like communism, it's rather spiffy in theory, but in practice human nature ruins it. Getting rid of it would mean a lot more work and probably an ass-ton of upheaval, but I'm quite sure it'd be better in the long run.

Another thing that might make all of you modly (and semi-modly)-types happier would be if you instituted and enforced the SA rule of "no mod sass"; everyone would know where they stood.

For the TL;DR crowd: Stricter rules, get rid of self-moderation, bump vocal oldbies/OMGCABALMEMBERS up to an official rank, keep anonymice.

{Disclaimer for crochety people: I realize that I speak for no one but myself. I don't think my opinion is worth more than any other faceless member of the Swarm. I'm not a fascist. Promise.}

ps- I said more or less the same thing here.
