Oh Great Mods,

I posted a wank about animation the other day in OTF that didn’t get the mocking replies I was expecting. Instead of laughing at the people, they began to debate the subject that started the whole thing.

I’m here to request that I be allowed to post about the results from OFT thread without giving any links or clues as to where it came from, proving to the n00b that 2D isn’t dead and the demographic he insists think it is so, don’t. Maybe a quote or two, but definitely no names.

I await your opinion.

Edit:
I was never in the fight. I posted early in both threads before they descended into such. The subject matter is interesting to me and I’ve been a member there for a bit. Basically I was intending to ignore the troll and write about the audience who are the main consumers of animation.

On my post on OFT (where there was hardly any discussion of the wank) it seems that most people prefer 2D except when, and only when, 3D might be better. Seeing the opinions being reiterated again and again, I just thought I’d ask.

I know the rules and you have spoken, I won’t reply. Thank you.

I was just talking to someone on some community or another about crazy people who write letters to the paper, and it made me think of this ridiculous controversy at the center of the letters page in Dayton's paper lately. The Dayton Islamic Society recently applied for permission to build a mosque in one of the snotty New Rich suburbs south of town. A little while before the zoning board turned down their application, it came out that a Baptist mega-church nearby had been stumping for support in blocking the mosque. You know the reputation Cincinnati has (or had on the 1980s and 1990s) for being a bunch of small-town crazy conservatives in a medium-sized city? Dayton wishes it was Cincinnati and tries to outdo it by being even crazier. The sort of people who make Dayton special yowling at each other in the letters column and the paper's anonymous phone-in comment column have been amusing enough, but now the wife of the mega-church's minister has written a four-column-long letter that more or less amounts to "We did not either say that! And if we did, well, how do you expect Christians not to bash other religions?"

I've been thinking about maybe posting something on it over at fw_offine, but I'm not sure the lulz would translate well across mediums. While it fills me with glee and is fun in a dishy oh-no-they-di'nt way, I'm not sure that the humor doesn't depend on knowing the Dayton area. For example, the other major story in the paper about now is that Dayton is trying to figure out how to attract "a creative class" to make up for the fact that no one wants to live here any longer than they have to, but they don't seem to have worked out that making ourselves look like a bunch of xenophobic hicks isn't the way to go about doing that. I'm not sure I've found any quotes that are hilarious except for being about a situation that's so absurd.

So does the novelty of it happening in real life outweigh the srs bizness that is religious intolerance? And then, if I post it to fw_offline which probably has all of three people watching it, does it really matter?

Now that JF has tags I've been tagging some of favorite FW posts, but now I've paused because there really should be a standard format for tags. Specifically, I'm wondering how individual fandoms should be tagged. For example, right now Bleach wanks are simply tagged "bleach", but could be tagged "fandom: bleach", or even "anime: bleach". I'm thinking that fandom tags should be prefixed with something, so that it's easy to tell them from non-fandom tags, and that it should be "fandom: bleach", so that wanks about Bleach anime filler episodes, wanks about recently released manga scanlations, and wanks about the musicals can all unambiguously go under one tag.

But I think it would be a good idea if the mods here clarified whether or not members of the wank communities will get banned for taking part in the er... discussion... regarding LJ's policies. I know lots of us have LJs and therefore may have a stake in this sort of thing, and I know during Strikethrough no one was banned for it, but I just want to make sure.

Edit to clarify because I am not of the smart today: Will people get banned for commenting that post on lj_biz?
Hope it's okay to use this as a sounding board for the other wank communities. Feel free to delete it or Internet shout at me or whatever if I've put it in the wrong place (and it'll be taken care of in the morning, because I is going to bed right now).

Anyway, I'm having a bit of trouble deciding about whether or not I ought to post something to otf_wank.

There's a rumor going around the Internets that people on Réunion Island are using dogs as live shark bait. It turns out to be mostly not true (basically it happened once recently, the dude was charged with animal cruelty, and it turns out that there have been cases of fishermen using already deceased animals as bait but there isn't this huge epidemic of it that the rumor mongers want people to believe). The (I'd warn against following this link if you're upset by pictures of hurt animals, because they have a rather graphic photo right there at the top of the page) Snopes page and the news story about it on National Geographic's site use a picture of a dog with a big hook through its snout, but apparently there's a strong theory that it's either a hoax or a miscredited picture of some poor dog that found bad luck all on its own. But somebody on the Dogs!Dogs!Dogs! group on Flickr gets hold of the story and posts a link to it, starting a huge fight about who the True Dog Lovers are and whether it's acceptable for people outside of the US of A to not hold American values (loud minority's opinion: no, it isn't) once someone else posts a link to the Snopes page on the story.

I find Flickr wank hilarious on its own merit, because come on, they're fighting about what people should think of pictures of someone else's pets on the Internet. And I think that the people who come right out and say "I know that this is probably isn't true, but I'm outraged anyway!" are funny. But when I find myself feeling the urge to warn people to be careful of the picture in one of the links, well...I'm not quite sure that "LOL Flickrers! But OMG, don't look at that picture" doesn't sway the balance more in favor of Your Thoughts on Dogs and Sharks and Reunions and Stuff than actual lulz.

If not that, how about the two-month long fight on the graves and cemeteries community about whether it's touching or tacky to leave things on graves?

So there's a wank I'd like to write up a report on, having been reminded of its hilarious, hilarious existance for the first time in a couple years. However, it's very old - the earliest parts of it go back a full decade! - and it's probably one of the greatest classic wanks ever. So that would seem to suggest BP. However however, it's never been reported in FW, and I was under the impression BP was mostly for reporting our old wanks, since there's not really a freshness date on wank if it's funny enough.

So I have no idea where I should be posting this.
But is it WANK?

It's big, that's for sure. If wank were an infectious disease like that one in Outbreak, this would be the apocalyptic bird flu of wank, infecting everything it touches.

Jim Zumbo is one of the biggest names in hunting/sport shooting ever to come down the pipe. He goes way beyond BNF status; he's actually sponsered by names such as Gerber, Remington and Outdoor Life magazine.

And then he opens his mouth to insert feet. Blogging about his recent sponsored coyote shoot with the new Remington rifle, he opines, ""

Must copypasta because, naturally, it has been bahleeted. Text was reposted for posterity pretty much everywhere though.

As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington, and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.

I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms. (Bitch, plz. I've fired 'em myself. Bad hunter BNF!

I call them "assault" rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are "tackdrivers."

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our "sporting firearms."

This really has me concerned. As hunters, we don't need the image of walking around the woods carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an assault rifle is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say game departments should ban them from the praries and woods.

That sound you heard? The collective gasp of every hunter or sport shooter with internet access. And then the internet exploded with the "O NOES U DINNIT!!" heard round the world.

Hi Mountain Seasonings drops sponsorship of Zumbo.
Blogs with bonus macros.
Ted Nugent to the rescue
Online mag: "Dude, ur such a tard. GDIAF."
Outdoor Life fires Zumbo
The motherfuckin' NRA fires Zumbo. Srsly, Zumbo, a hunter ought to know the meaning behind "ten pounds of shot fired from a five pound cannon."
The Outdoor Channel cancels his show.
naturally, Remington gives him his walking papers too.

Shockingly, you're viewing a still rapidly-mushrooming issue. Every few hours something else hits the web - a new sponsor dropping him, some obscure outdoor writer siding with him, yet another poorly phrased apology - and the internet explodes again. I keep picturing wankprophet collapsing onto a chair, clutching his heart and gasping, "It's as if... somewhere... millions of people just began wanking and wanking and wanking and OH GOD-"

Just when you think he mkight be able to salvage his career, Sarah Brady, yes, THAT Sarah Brady, opens her mouth and pisses off millions.

Unverified copypaste, so full of inaccuracies that it is either written by a politician (thus true) or stupid propanganda. So it's probably true, but even so.

Even Remington's top gun writer agrees on Assault Weapons

With important writers such as this on our side, it is clear that we
have a cultural imperative to remove dangerous terrorist rifles from
our streets, and our woods.

Jim Zumbo is a writer for the prestigious Outdoor Life magazine and
represents the views of America's true sportsmen. He is also sponsored
by Remington.

but this is the other part

Monday, February 19, 2007

The tragic proliferation of Sniper Rifles

I would like to take a moment to comment on the proliferation of
Sniper Rifles. Sniper Rifles are typically equipped with a
high-powered scope, and every single one of them can blow through the
body armor cops wear. They can even penetrate multiple police cars.
Does the Second Amendment protect cop-killer Sniper Rifles? The NRA
certainly thinks so, along with the powerful gun lobby that wants your
children and your law enforcement officers to be at risk from these
weapons of mass destruction. Some of these Sniper Rifles can even
penetrate ballistic or armored glass, lightly armored vehicles, and
armored limousines. Senator Ted Kennedy attempted to solve this with
an important bill that would have banned armor piercing ammunition and
protected lawful firearm commerce:

"Another rifle caliber, the 30.30 caliber, was responsible for
penetrating three officers' armor and killing them in 1993, 1996, and
2002. This ammunition is also capable of puncturing light-armored
vehicles, ballistic or armored glass, armored limousines, even a
600-pound safe with 600 pounds of safe armor plating.....

..It is outrageous and unconscionable that such ammunition continues
to be sold in the United States of America.."

Should our elected officials live under the threat of reprisal on
their lives from disgruntled constituents? The Gun Lobby seems to
think so. We disagree.

Sniper Rifles can be equipped with precision optics above even what
the Military uses, allowing a sniper to deliver rounds within
millimeters of accuracy - enabling them to engage targets at distances
of well over one hundred meters. Is there a pressing need to be able
to kill with accuracy at that distance? It is too far to justify as
self defense. It is too far for hunting. It is only useful for those
who wish to murder from afar.

Large caliber Sniper Rifles such as the .50 Browning Machine Gun can
derail freight cars, shoot down aircraft and helicopters, damage vital
ground equipment such as power substations, fuel tanks, and air
traffic control, and cause complete chaos. For more information on why
large caliber machine-gun rounds must be banned, visit
http://www.50caliberterror.com. A shipment of large caliber
machine-gun round sniper rifles made by Steyr turned up in Iran, and
are being used on our own soldiers, as the .50 bullets easily defeat
their body armor, their up-armored humvees, and even APCs.

Many forward thinking, progressive politicians such as Ted Kennedy,
Chuck Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, and
Barack Obama have voted against Center-Fire Rifle Ammunition of types
for Sniper Rifles, but due to the pressure and massive financial
resources of the gun industry, the necessary steps to protect our
homes and lives have not been attained.

Sniper Rifles have been used by murderers and spree killers for years,
with notable incidents such as the Beltway Snipers, the Clocktower
Sniper, and more.

ANY rifle configured and equipped as a sniper rifle has no sporting
purpose especially as a hunting rifle. They are too big and heavy to
take to the field. Designed for distance shooting, they are useless
for the ranges at which game animals are normally shot, and when used
on sporting sized game at range they often just wound the animal,
inhumanely forcing it to die slowly while the would-be hunter tracks
it to finish it off. Most Sniper Rifles fire atypically large
cartridges and ultra high velocity ammunition that can travel much
greater distances that standard ammunition. The danger imposed from
missed shots and ricochetes from these specialty rounds is
unreasonable.

Most of these rifles carry multiple rounds, with either an automatic
mechanism, or a quick toggle action to rapidly move another bullet
into the breech, ready to fire into another victim. In most states,
they are nearly unrestricted. Anyone over the age of 18 can buy one.
If they can't pass a background check, they skirt the NCIS system by
going to a gunshow, or finding a private sale in the newspaper. A
murderer camped at a distance from a public gathering could quickly
turn it into a massacre dwarfing anything we have seen before in the
United States, if they had a Sniper Rifle. If they adopted hit and run
tactics, entire portions of our country could be shut down.

Sniper Rifles shoot a high powered bullet that is almost always fatal.
They are designed for one thing- delivering powerful overkill with
deadly precision. You don't need the kind of power and accuracy that
can kill a man at five hundred yards for hunting rabbits or defending
your house.

We should also give commendations to France because many years ago
they designated any firearm capable of shooting military ammunition as
a military arm, illegal to posess without a special permit and
unlawful to use for hunting. The 223, 308, 7mm mauser, 30-06, and
6.5x55 have no place in the hunting fields of France. Firearms
shooting these calibers are military weapons only designed for killing
PEOPLE and should be kept out of the hands of the general population.
Because they have no hunting purpose, there is no reason for civilians
to own them.

Every state in the USA has hunting equipment rules that limit the
caliber of firearm used to take game. They also limit the types of
rifles, length, magazine capacity, etc. States should amend these
hunting regulations to restrict the use of "sniper" rifles, specialty
"sniper" cartridges, and "sniper" ammunition. Limits on weight, barrel
length, bipods and tripods, thumbhole stocks and pistol grips, night
vision type scopes, scopes of excessive magnification, super magnum
and high velocity ammunition, and military slings should be imposed.
They have no place in the hunting fields of America and hunting usage
should not be used as an argument for civilians to own such firearms
and weapons. There are more than ample hunting rifles, cartridges, and
rounds of ammunition to choose from without them.

Let us hope that in a safer, saner America, we will succeed in our efforts to restrict the deadly spread of long distance murder rifles.

Told you it was huge. I'm still hunting the umpty-billion post wanky discussions. In this case, fire=smoke. If I find them, and if this constitutes wank, it goes in OTF, yes?

Or, you know, better/preferred ways to be asked.

Also, what sort of action are all of you most comfortable with:

1. when there's doubt over a bannable offence?
2. they fail to clear up their participation or correct their mistake within a reasonable time period after being asked?

Lastly, I just wanna thank you all for how you've been reporting rule infractions and problems. As always, the mod email in the fandom wank userinfo is the most reliable way to contact us but we still appreciate the posts, comments, and ims. Even if I was miles away from aim the last time before I could ask more information :( Sorry, Oulangi.

That reminds me.

I need help getting fandom_wank's memories updated. I've fallen way behind and life has been crazy lately and I don't see myself catching up any time soon, and blah blah blah excusecakes... but anyway, would anyone like to help? It's pretty easy, but time consuming. Also, great way to find old wanks that you've forgotten! ;-)

I've already made this request on my journal, so if you'd like to help out, go leave a comment there and friend me. I'll be making another post with more details after I get everyone who wants to help.

Thanks!
