Why did I let myself get roped into this?

Yeah, to an outsider, it might seem hypocritical, but there's a big difference between fanfiction and plagiarism. As I only remembered after I'd replied, plagiarism is officially defined as "use of others' ideas and/or words without proper attribution", and by that definition, fanfiction with the proper disclaimer is not plagiarism. We're not claiming credit for coming up with the characters or the world, just the words. That's probably why plagiarism in fanfic is such a big deal; all that's assumed to be original is what the author writes, and if they stole those words, then nothing they wrote is their own.

Also, fanfiction is a time-honored creative writing tool for lit. classes. Has she never gotten an assignment that required her to write a story in the same universe as the classic she just read?

Finally, plagiarism is treated as a big deal by courts, even when the plagiarism occurred in works that didn't really matter. One person's medical license was revoked because his earlier plagiarism in papers showed a "lack of good moral character". CC has shown the same lack of moral character when she plagiarized for her fanfiction writing, and by that standard, we shouldn't trust her to write her own words professionally, either.

Somebody needs to vid this song around Five's regeneration into Six. (Especially if they're clever enough to work in references to what's coming with Seven. But yes.)

Sweet baby samchrist (or, deity of your choosing).. I have no time in my life whatsofuckingever now. Teaching, ya'll, is the hardest shit I've ever done. )

Gah, I wish I had the time to update this more, flist, I haven't been keeping up with Systematics either, though I have a thousand journal entries from the past three weeks. I miss you so much and I'm so behind on things, so how you doin?

Also: HURRICANE! *flaily-shoo-hands* GO AWAY GUSTAV! Ya'll, my city just might not be able to stand another hurricane. If you saw just how much is still devastated from Katrina.. *shakes head* Unbelievable and heartbreaking and even a Category 1 might be too much for it to handle.

    Something Important for a Change
Move On is hosting/promoting a voter registration drive in Dallas this weekend. I'm going to help out at Union Station, and would love to have anyone local join me, but there are also other places and times where we can help.

I'm sure there are similar events going on in other cities throughout Texas. I hope that, if you are a Texan, you will consider participating. And if you're not a Texan, please pass this info along to any Texans you may have on your flist. And of course, please consider helping out wherever you are.

Texas has long been considered a gimme for the the farthest right of the Neocons. However, the last election we held here, while a local election, went solidly Democrat. I have seen some indications that the Neocons and hatemongers don't consider Texas quite so much of a gimme anymore.

I think that if we work hard enough, we can turn things around in this state. At the very least, we can make the Thugs devote considerable resources in terms of time and money and turn this state into a battleground state. I honestly believe we can do more than that and help elect Obama and many other progressives.

    Pass it on!

I'm in a shitty, shitty mood these days. I wish I could say I'm PMSing or something, but, uh, I don't actually PMS. I just get these wild moodswings for no reason sometimes, and they're not made any better by the fact the government SUCKS, and uni SUCKS, and they CAN'T MANAGE TO STAMP A LITTLE PIECE OF PAPERWORK IN FIVE FUCKING DAYS AND I WON'T BE DONE WITH MY NATIONAL ID APPLICATION BEFORE RAMADAN AND SUCK SUCK SUCK!

    *fumes*

Things I rarely do that I have done in the past 48 hours:
    • Ranted at a friend over the phone for calling me when I told her not to.
    • Insulted someone's parentage on UFB.
    • Driven a Student Services employee to near-tears by yelling at him.

... I think I'll go have some chocolate.

Oh, and my eldest (first) cousin is leaving Egypt tonight, and I'm coping badly. :/

I watched The Dark Knight! I know I said I wouldn't, but the Star Wars cartoon already dropped from the cinema and it was already too late for Kung Fu Panda today, so I had to.

I don't think I really still need to spoiler-cut The Dark Knight, yes? )

What I did when I wasn't at work.
Jason and I did a lot of wandering the countryside this weekend and on Monday and Tuesday. Saturday we went out to the GWAPA meeting in Sterling pretty much only because a member mentioned on their forum that they were bringing dwarf crayfish to auction. I decided that I had to get them so off we went. One bidding war later (but still cheaper than paying shipping) I had a pair of blueish dwarf crays. Unsexed but maybe I'll get lucky and have a m/f pair. They breed pretty much as readily as cherry red shrimp so cross your fingers. These guys are tiny and adorable. Probably about the same size as the Corydoras habrosus in the tank and just a bit bigger than the big female cherries. One of them mostly hangs out under the driftwood and the other tends to spend a lot of time patroling the tank perimeter.

For the life of me, I can't remember what we did on Sunday other than take some frozen fish food in to my office. My commute is so long that it melts and gets gross if I try to take it in on a weekday. I did some gardening stuff and that's all I can remember.

Monday, we dropped my car off for inspection and headed out to Loudoun and Faquier counties to do some agrotourism. Sadly, neither of us checked to see if my favorite orchard was open, so after finding it locked, we hit the other one down the road and picked a bunch of peaches. The winery there that we had intended to buy some stuff from was also closed (although their sign said they were supposed to be open) so we went in search of new places. First place we ended up was Barrel Oak Winery, a brand new facility. No, I don't know why they have a bunch of evil laughter and overuse of exclaimation marks on their home page. However, we did enjoy doing a tasting there and ended up buying a couple of their whites. Their reds, not so much.

Stopped at the Red Fox for lunch which was, as always, fantastic, and then we headed out to Chrysalis Vineyards to do another tasting. We had great fun talking to the lady behind the counter there (apparently her family used to own the St. James's Gate Brewery before it was leased to the Guiness folks for centuries) and enjoyed the wines. I'm a fan of Nortons which they have a bunch. Lots of fun.

Tuesday had a later start because Jason had to get a tire replaced before we could take his car in for inspection, but after that, we headed out to the Patuxent Research Refuge which we always see a sign for off of 295 on the way up to fish stores. We ended up at their South Tract and spent a couple of hours walking around Cash Lake. The edges of the lake are fairly shallow and covered with all kinds of vegetation and small wildlife. The only large wildlife we spotted was a heron fishing from on top of a broken post. Lots of frogs, dragonflies, a velvet ant which I had never seen live before, and lots of pretty plants.

It's a lovely preserve and worth visiting. I am especially a fan of the fact that they maintain more than just two trails, unlike some local parks by our house.

By the time we got done there and with visiting a fish store near by (what, I needed lily ferts), I realized that heading back to DC at that hour was asking for traffic hell, so we ended up in Anapolis for dinner. I had never been there before and while there wasn't much open by the time we got in, we had a nice dinner and walked around Main Street for a while. They seem to roll up the sidewalks to everything but the restaurants after five. We'll have to go again when things are open. Still, a very nice evening.

    A PSA for gmail users...
Especially those of you who use public WiFi (or unsecure private WiFi) to access Gmail.

You really should turn on the option in your settings that says "Always use SSL".

    Here's why.

If you use the Gmail notifier it'll cause problems at first, but you'll find instructions on how to fix the gmail notifier in the "Learn more" link in your settings next to the "Always us SSL" option.

This vulnerability exists for most other social networking sites and web email apps as well, but at least Google offers a fix.

Just finished it as my latest insomniac film - The History Boys is utterly fantastic, and I think it'd be right up the alley of FW folk.

I can't say why beyond the dialogue, but I have this inkling of a feeling it would really be appreciated here.

    WTF was that?
We just had the most godawful animal noise come out of the woods. It sounded like a monkey alternating screams with banging a large tree around. And given that it started in the middle of an episode of Dexter, it took a few to realize that it wasn't coming from the tv. Went on for probably five minutes and then stopped. I have no idea what the fuck it was. Never heard anything like that in my life. Definitely wasn't cats and was definitely up in the trees behind the house. Current theory is raccoons having a turf war but idek. Freaky, freaky shit.

So between the latest Twilight wank and this, I hate JF today. D:

Joshua Green of The Atlantic apparently watched a completely different speech by Hillary Clinton last night than the one I saw. I am boggled by this review of her speech. I thought she was marvelous and impassioned.

I did have to laugh over Green’s description of Dennis Kucinich (a man I greatly admire) as a “meth-addled smurf.” He was bouncing around a bit.

After watching Senator Clinton’s speech I left the room my TV is in and went back in my office to goof around on the computer. I could still hear the TV and it sounded like the MSNBC folks were screaming at each other. I distinctly heard a gentleman screeching and shouting about Joe Biden. I’m kind of sorry I missed seeing it, as it sounded like the posturing before a wrestling match.

On an even more humorous note, someone playing Sims 2 Apartment Life has posted on the [info]thesims2 comm about a very funny glitch they’ve had.

Last night my trainer took my measurements for the first time since the end of April. I’m a little disappointed that I’ve only lost 1 /2 inch from my upper arms and maybe 2 inches from my bust. But I’ve lost 3 1 /2 inches off my hips, 2 3/4 off my thighs and 5 off my waist. They got a new scale at the end of July and when I weighed on it my weight was actually up 5 pounds so I was depressed and didn’t weigh again until last night. Fortunately those 5 pounds were gone, but unfortunately that was it in terms of pounds lost. But at least I am moving in the right direction again.

More importantly, my range of motion and ability to move (especially walking) have increased exponentially over the last month. I’m hoping that and that little bit of weight loss mean my metabolism will kick up and I’ll make more progress this fall.

I need to be more active, in general, not just work out more. I’m planning on getting back into gardening this fall. I’d like to plant some rose bushes on my patio and clean up some of the junky stuff that is out there. And I need to do some weeding. But I’m looking for some other non-sedentary activities to take up, as well. I like crafting, but it’s pretty darned sedentary. Reading and movies are, as well. I’ll think of something.

In 1996, when I was just eleven years old, I realized something truly profound. People are either crows or skunks. If I had had the internet back then I probably would've made a quiz about it. It would've comprised of a single choice. Pick one:

    1) If it makes you happy it can't be that bad.

    2) Just because you feel good doesn't make it right.

If you answered 1 you're a crow, 2 and you're a skunk. Back then I looked to music for the meaning of life. Actually, I pretty much still do.

    What a wake-up call
Hecate just licked bratwurst grease off my lip.

    Cat tongue on my mouth.

    Nice bit of AM wtfery.

Yesterday was productive. Got two copies of the new bus schedule book (it is so evil that they charge for them!) and confirmed the changes on the downtown part of the route 20 (yay for not having to wait at 6th & Brazos, 6th & Congress has less loitering drunks). Had a tasty breakfast at Magnolia; from the breakfast specials menu even, because it was after 7 (breakfast specials there are weekdays 7-11). Mailed out the things I had to mail. It was weird being out of the house erranding so late in the day, but I had to go when the Cap Metro store was open and the post office was open, since I had a media mail package to send out. And I came home to a CnS from BPAL, yay!

I have An American Crime from Netflix to watch, but I'm not sure I can handle that much depressing this early in the day.

Much to my dismay, I can't upload pictures to my temporary computer at all, thanks to my own stupidity/forgetfulness.

I only have a few more days in Korea, and they're going to be a little crazy. I'm going out with a friend tonight, then I have to finish buying presents*, then I need to help my mom's friend move, and then I have to find the exchange student who's going back to Seattle with me and make sure I don't lose him on the way home.

Other than that, I've experienced a ridiculous outpouring of fannishness over the last week or so. I just finished burning through the Legion of Super Heroes reboot and doodling fanarts of various legionnaires.

Alright, so: I think I'm going to buy a tablet when I get back. I'm not a professional artist/design monkey/etc, I just want to be able to colour on the computer without crying. Do any of you lot have suggestions as to company/size/brand?

*I hate buying souvenirs for people. I know folks are satisfied just getting a little "I didn't completely forget you!" tchotchka, but it bugs me when I can't find something sort of meaningful.
