The boys and I got our geek on tonight at Game Storm 6. We spent most of the time playing Apples to Apples, and we'll probably go back before the weekend's over. The dork in the air was beautifully overwhelming.

My only quibble is the message in the front of the con guide, from the chair of events. Let me quote: To wax pastoral for a moment; Men desire "An Adventure to Live", "A Battle to Fight", and "A Beauty to Rescue". And women desire "An Adventure to Share", "To be fought for", and "To Be a Beauty to Unveil".

I'll pause while you all retch before continuing.

Yes, that's right, kiddies: You boys better be all fighting and taking charge, and don't you forget to rescue you a girl or two. And ladies, don't you dare pick up a sword or try to find your own way out of your dilemma. You just sit there and wait for a big strong man to come and help you. And don't even THINK about trying to rescue someone else, or your uterus will jump right out of your body and run screaming for the hills. Let's not even go into wanting to rescue or be rescued by someone of the same sex, because that just never happens, right?

>.< Gaming - the last bastion of geek chauvinism. And the beautiful irony is that one of the panels at the con was to address the question of why more girls don't game.

Quick! Let's get Sara Felton in there to bust his ass! Or at least stretch out his collar.

Sara. Rules.

Yes she does.

I'm surprised there hasn't been any KODT wank. You know, aside from Ryan's letter, or the time I wrote a letter there and someone replied a few issues later with a rather unfunny parody of it...

Ooh, really? I wish I could go look, but my ex-boyfriend (who now lives a few states away) got all the KODT when he left.

Oh, someone named Ivy K Ryan wrote in to say she was canceling her subscription because of the way Dave ran Sara's character when she was away (Dave had Sara's barbarian strip down for maximum movement.) There was *ONE* lecherous comment made, and it was Bob's "Dude! Thorina's almost naked!". All the other table chatter made it quite clear that the action of stripping her down was to unencumber her, but Ryan likened it to rape, which spawned a lot of talk in the letters section for a long time.

And I...well heck, I didn't even mean for my letter to be printed, I wrote it half-heartedly on their message board. Basically, I said that Brian has a lot of signs of Asperger's Syndrome. So anyway, a few issues after it got in, someone wrote in with a snarky stupid letter about Dave having something or another because he saw spots when he had to map.

...yeah, it didn't make sense to me either.

Oh, wow, I remember both of those. Ivy's letter just blew up all over the place, spooge everywhere. (That makes me laugh too, thinking about the recent Superbowl incident -- I recently got involved in an argument with someone who insisted that it was a simulated rape and the song is about sexual predation, and I'm like, dude, it's a fucking POP SONG... er, I digress.) The Ryan letter was definitely the wank that would not die.

And the Brian thing -- I don't know anything about Asperger's, but man, people pick the most bizarre things to make fun of, I swear.

Actually, if anyone has a link to any of the Ryan series of letters, I'll post them to FW.

I don't have a link but I could scan them for you if you want to post them on Fandom Wank Offline.
KOTD has gotten really heavy on the spooge lately with the new "debate" column. They take an issue that gamers think is important, like dice games vrs diceless gaming, and let people argue it out. The one about the D20 system was particualarly eye-roll inducing because half the con's side arguments boiled down to "Now anyone can play and I'm not speshul anymore! wah!"
Also some jackass recently posted a "gurl gamers are teh suxxors" letter recently that while hugely assholish and spoogey, got some very calm and reasoned replies. Would anyone like me to post these?

Dude, that's what I made the comm for. It could use more activity. :)

(Plus as you can see, the previous submission to this was of a wanky letter in an issue of a comic. Since it is [well, was, since thanks to [info]panthea now there's a quote of the relevant portion here] only available as printed matter, and thus only accessible IRL, I'll allow it.)

Silly! It's because girls are too dainty to roll those big, heavy dice all the way across that scary table!

This has next to no bearing on anything. I just wanted to tell you all that I have about half a dozen six-siders which are smaller than my pinky nail.

One of mine, the dark blue one, got lost a few weeks ago. Someone probably crushed it underfoot by now. Eeh, it's only ten cents.

Eeee, I have a bunch of those too. I can't help but "awww" over how cute they are, which irritates the male gamers to no end (and yet they like using them too, go figure).

I am suddenly reminded of playing D&D in high school, where a friend and I ended up playing shirtless so that the guys would remember we were at the table, and stop trying to order us around.

Of course, it kind of defeated the purpose, as then they kept forgetting that they were playing as they stared at our bras.

You know, I oguht to invite some of these guys to my gaming groups. Letr's look at the female gamers I know:
The combat fan whose current character is a small, fuzzy, EOD-specialist Jedi
The one who half the time plays the pyromaniac asshole -- actually most of her characters like to light things on fire...
The player who plays male characters who either like to kill thngs, sleep with them, or both.

Even my female gamer friends who do play closer to steroetype, still like combat and being the hero.

I guess Lincoln just has a good climate for female gamers, at least if you know where to look.
